Souls- Do we have them?

The human soul, an immaterial entity that exists within each and every one of us... goes hand-in-hand with belief in the after-life...I think you've heard of it. Most religions believe that we have a soul that continues to exist after our bodies die and they go off to a magical happy land where all souls exist together and play freeze tag for eternity... or the souls are judged by the all-mighty and sent down to hell. There are deep instinctual/psychological reasons for the human belief in the soul, and I want to know whether you believe in a soul or not, why, and what you think those reasons I just said are (yeah, the instinctual/psychological ones)... so tell me.

I don't believe in the soul, I think our self is the brain. My reason for human belief in the soul: the unbelievability of the end of self... we can't possibly wrap our minds around belief in our own lack of existence... just try to imagine permanent sleep, like without dreams, and you NEVER wake up, that's right, you never wake up and get to think about your lack of existence... just try to imagine dark, but not dark, because you can't comprehend dark when you don't exist... just try to imagine nothing, pure nothing... that's one reason why humans have to believe in their own immortality... it hurts my brain when I try to think about the end of me.

Do you believe in the human soul, or not?
Discuss.

No. We do not.

If we did people would be selling them to the devil or some shit like that.

His eyebrows were obviously doing the talking...

I agree with him, though.

However, if the devil himself were to emerge from the fiery depths of hell and wanted me to trade my soul for say... a Twix bar, I'd refuse, because of proof of a soul.

so you see, since there is no proof to begin with other than religion (that is to say none at all), I can't believe in any soul existing.

A Klondike bar, on the other hand, I'd give my soul in an instant

That's an interesting question. I don't really believe in a soul, because it's existence is just to hard too fathom, even more so than my own lack of existence when I die. I don't know, I just can't fathom it.

But then again, what do we define as a soul? Does it have to be something which goes on to heaven (or hell, for that matter)? Or is it really just another word for our consciousnesses?

You got one on Amazon? I had to go through a contact in the russian black market.
I certainly hope we have souls, if not for my vested interest in the market, then for the hope of the true pieces of crap in humanity to undergo severe torture after they die. That makes me smile.

I can't say for sure, but to say that nothing is there is ignorant. Most call it a soul and thus I will refer to it as such.

Think about who you are. Think about the big things and the smalls things. What's your favorite color? What's your favorite food? What kind of music do you like? et cetera.

So much differences that go beyond skin muscle tissue and bone. We also have emotions. Unlike machines we feel, think, and we even dream. Anyone can base around logic, but those "gut feelings" that some people get is your soul sensing something your mind misses.

Heroes of our age can defined as ones who defy logic. Who consider logic as an option, not a means even if logically an answer is better than the ones they choose.

Some people I know only base their life around logic and science, but neither one can explain everything. Love for example. Why do one like one attribute and hate the other why some others think the opposite?

Bullshit artist say "Oh it is mere chemical reactions in the brain and hormones." I beg to differ because love is something that goes beyond simple chemical reactions and brainwaves.

Do we have souls? I can't say for sure. It is like asking "Is there god?" or "Do ghosts exist?" All I can say it is ignorant to say that nothing is there because there is something there and there are something that go beyond what science can explain.

So many fools in this life always want proof of an existence. They always want someone to prove that a soul exists. You people are fools if EVERYTHING has to have a physical evidence to it.

Love is not a physical thing yet people know that exist, unless you are heartless cold prick.

No point to even think of souls unless evidence is presented. Until then it goes in the "No" pile.

I'm not sure. Being that there's no absolute proof (or disproof) of the existence of souls, I can't go either way. There's also the problem of identifying exactly what a soul is.

Nope.
As with many religions, sometimes people tend to explain things they can't understand through creative means. In this case, I think the soul simply represents the brain and mind.

No, as I am not religious.
If you believe in a religion with souls, then you very likely do.
Not that many people would go against that either. A few might, but not too many.

No offense, but is there any real discussion here? I could ask if my ass produces undetectable, magical fairies; I'd get the same useful dialogue out of that discussion.
