Space Marine Dev Not Worried about Gears Comparisons

According to its director, the Warhammer 40K shooter will be a unique experience and not a rip-off of other games.

Relic Entertainment is aware that people are comparing its upcoming third person shooter, Warhammer 40K: Space Marines, to the Gears of War games, but says that it isn't losing any sleep over it. Relic has previously worked on the Dawn of War games - also set in the Warhammer 40K universe - and the Company of Heroes series.

Raphael van Lierop, the game's director, said that the team was flattered by the comparisons to Epic's shooter series, and that it had set the bar very high for Relic. Van Lierop said that the comparisons weren't really warranted however, as Relic was trying to make a unique experience with Space Marine, rather than emulate an already successful game. He said that Relic always pushed itself to innovate with its games, and added that the studio had already received a lot of positive feedback from play testers and the press about Space Marine. He hadn't let himself become overconfident, however, saying that he was well aware that the third person shooter market was incredibly competitive, and that the team would really have to work hard for the game to be successful.

It's not hard to see why people might compare the two games: both feature burly space marines shooting at aliens with enormous guns, with the occasional improbable, chainsaw-esque melee weapon popping up from time to time. The 40K universe has a supernatural element that the Gears of War games lack however, complete with demons and space elves. That seems a pretty good way of differentiating the two games, from both a story and a gameplay point of view.

As long as there is an army painter, I will buy it. That has always been a selling point for Relic Games set in 40k

Shouldn't it be Gears getting compared to Warhammer? They sure as shit didn't invent burly men fucking up insectoid things. Or chainsaw attachments.

At the risk of sounding really pedantic, I think I have to agree with the devs of Space Marine, mainly because Warhammer did just about everything Gears did first. And Starcraft. And warcraft.
If anyone ripped off anybody in the first place, I think Gears did it in yanking the big burly guys in improbably huge armor with a super powerful assault rifle and a chainsaw based melee weapon.

Besides, the best way to avoid ripping off Gears is to avoid the temptation to make every possible landscape a chest high wall farm. And lay off the grunting.

Edit: Damn, ninja'ed!

WANT!

WAAAAAANT!!!

Cannot wait for this game to come to life. Relic have always been awesome in my eyes. I own the Company of Heroes Gold edition and the Dawn of War Complete series edition (Pc wont run 2nd game but I loved it on my friends PCs), therefore as a man who enjoyed those and Gears this game is an orgasm waiting to happen.

What a load of bull-shit. Huge, steaming piles of Orky Bull-Shit. How is this anything like Gears? Because its 3rd person and has a chain saw related weapon? Because that is literally where the comparison ends. Its like saying COD is a rip off of Halo because both are first person shooters and have grenades.

I mean... it blows my mind. Gears: a gritty shooter based game set in the near future against a subterranean menace. I mean, its a cover based shooter where if you look at an enemy wrong you die.

Space marine: Set 40,000 years in the future, where you madly charge into combat hacking apart Orks, Aliens, Mutants and everything in between?

I mean, game play seems to be at opposite ends of the scale, and the setting, apart from being sci-fi, isn't even remotely similar.

These comments are of course directed at the concept of comparison, not at your report... However, you should be throttled for coining the term "Space Elf". They're not bloody space elves. They are Eldar: The futuristic re-imagining of the a-typical fantasy elf. Pedantic I know - but space elf seems condescending. Its not like you called the Tau: Space Japs.

I doubt that there will be.
At least for single player.

Ultra-marines are always blue.

Hopefully there will be something in the multiplayer aspect, if there is multiplayer

Hands up if you think Space Marines is the most generic title ever. :p
You'd have to be either psychic or insane to see a sea of hands in a forum, unless it's a picture.
OT: I'd never even heard of this game being developed. Seems interesting.

So long as the game is fun to play, it can be compared to Super Mario Bros. for all I care.

I think the real question here is, will there be co-op? Relic has given some mighty amusing co-op in the past, and this should be no exception!

if the tau were anything it would be space Chinese

but anyway, of course people will compare it to gears, people are idiots, look at how many people compared darksiders to god of war? despite the fact that the 2 games had almost nothing in common

Huh, I actually believe that. Relic has been pretty good at innovation in the past, so maybe this will be a breath of fresh air for the genre..

..that will be completely ignored, like Vanquish.

[sub]Granted, this has a pretty big name attached to it.[/sub]

People who say that are idiots. So the fact that WH40k has been around for far longer than Gears means nothing does it? I can't really see how they could possibly do a TPS any differently, without straying too far from the source material. Which would undoubtedly be worse.

As an aside, who gives a fuck anyway? If it's fun why should that matter? I mean it's not like they've literally lifted code and textures from Epic.

If there is going to be any chest high walls there, it will be for the Orks or whatever to hide behind before Captain Titus, an Adeptus Astartes of the glorious Ultramarines chapter smashes through them, killing everything.

Happy?

@ Moonpooman: Actually yeah that would make me pretty happy. But I wasn't saying there shouldn't be *any* cover. <_< Just limit the time you spend hunch-running and rolling and turtling up waiting for blood to fall off your face, is kinda what I was aiming at there.
