this thread is all about speed. What do you think are the best speed boosting powers, equipment, etc.

Also time stop/slow/drain abilities will be discussed here as well.

Finally lets combine them all to make the ultimate speed demon!

Master force speed from KOTOR. Does a little of both. Speeds you up while slowing everything else down. rank 3 force speed from Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and I am sure the same or similar power is in Jedi Outcast.
Pluto + Griffin card from Castlevania Circle of the Moon.
Samus's speed booster for her power suit.
From battletech, MASC which is also equipped on some battle armors IMO making it valid to this thread. Also some armors increase wearer speed even without MASC
Diablo 2: The barbarian has a passive speed boost. Paladin's vigor aura. Assassin's burst of speed. Plus some equipment can carry speed boost. A complete Trang-Oul's set causes the necromancer to fly around at crazy speeds, but he loses ability to switch from run to walk.
Torchlight. equipment can have speed bonuses, and has the haste spell.
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2: The sprint skill. Also Dorn has a passive speed boost.

From D&D: Barbar gets a fast movement. Monk gets a huge unarmored speed bonus. Boots of speed/movement, quicksilver boots, the longstrider spell.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy has a speed powerup

Now those abilities affects that alter time.
the dagger of time from Prince of Persia could do quite a bit with time. Slow it, reverse it, stop it completely briefly.
The Matrix's bullet time, Path of Neo time would slow down for Neo.
Fable's slow time spell. What an absolutely beautiful, completely broken piece of magic. At master level everything slows to a crawl. Makes certain quests a breeze. Combined with Physical shield, just ridiculous.
The stopwatch sub-weapon from Castlevania. Also the mage type devil's time stop from Curse of Darkness.
Blinx the time sweeper, while yes controlled like crap was all about time manipulation.

So which is the best speed power-up, spell, or tech, and what would happen if we were to combine all of these?

from the now shutdown City of Heroes: Siphon Speed and Speed Boost, both part of the Kinetics buff/debuff set. Siphon speed would inflict -move speed/-recharge to an enemy and +move/+recharge to you, practically negating the need for a travel power and was rarely resisted, even by boss and elite boss enemies. it also allowed you to move quickly without incurring the annoying travel power suppression (if you used a power, your travel speed was capped for like 2 seconds to 'walk' speed). Siphon Speed also can stack with itself. Speed Boost would grant +move speed/+recharge to your teammates, also avoiding the travel speed suppression - although melee types sometimes were annoyed by their lack of positioning control.

i'm also a big fan of haste in the Final Fantasy series, especially in the ATB and CTB systems. anything that allows me to attack more often.

I just have to nitpick and say that force speed in kotor did not slow time, it increased movement speed and gave you an extra attack or two each round.

Haste from FF is the best.

Morrowind boots of blinding speed. Most appropriately named item in any game.

Sonic 2 is the best.

Black Panther Soul in Castlevania Dawn/Aria of Sorrow was always fun, zipping past most enemies with ease. At higher levels, weaker enemies like Medusa Heads and Flea Men disintegrate upon touching you. Justice.

Haste is usually the best status buff in any given Final Fantasy, but Quick in Final Fantasy 6 and Tidus' Quick Hit in FFX are even more broken. With the Gem Box in FF6, you can cast your best offensive spell followed by Quick on yourself, ensuring that character will get the next turn immediately. Repeat until enemy is dead or you're out of MP.

Another JRPG with some very awesome speed-manipulation abilities is Wild Arms 5. Intrude costs 75% of your maximum FP but gives you two additional turns, and late-game there's a multitude of abilities you can get to boost your FP back up very quickly. Turn Shift lets you give your turn to another party member, and there's your standard Speed-Boost buff as well to combine with those. I have yet to find a way to beat the strongest optional boss without abusing these abilties combined with Avril's random chance to delay the enemy's turn every time she attacks them. As a counterpoint to this, there is a boss whose speed increases the more damage they've taken.

ZA WARUDO!

Quiver Dance and Dragon Dance from pokemon.
Quiver Dance increases SpAtk, SpDef and Speed by 1 stage each
Dragon Dance increases Atk and Speed by 1 stage each

Each stage is a +50% boost, with a maximum of 6 stages.
They simultaneously boost speed and an offensive stat, with enough boosts a pokemon can become practically unstoppable

My favorite is in League of Legends with Rammus + homeguard boots. You only get five seconds of speed from the boots, sure, but the once in ten games where you get a perfect situation to roll in out of nowhere and ruin everyone's day makes it worth it. Second place goes to Lulu just because she's going so fast that her hat almost blows off.

The Ocarina of Time has power over time,(obviously) it speeds up or slows down time, changes from day to night etc.
Also from Zelda, there's the bunny hood that doubles Link's running speed.

I'm not sure how we would combine all of theses gadgets and powers together, but it would be pretty messy(and powerful).

World of Warcraft, A nightelf engineer rogue can get up to 451% movement speed for about 5 seconds while stealthed, which is by no means the winner on this page (that goes to the D&D thing above).

Well, people have brought up Final Fantasy's Haste spell. I'd like to remind them about Hastega as well. Only thing better than that was Haste+All in FF7 (less MP). Also, abilities like Short Charge in FFT were great to have at your disposal.

Someone already brought up how the KOTOR Force Speed skills increased movement speed and added an additional attack or two in each round. I think it also increased your defense rating as well. Even if it didn't, you'd be hard pressed to find a better skill for speed buffing in any game.

Might as well bring up Super Sonic. The problem with the speed shoes in Sonic is that you become too fast to see where you are going and avoid enemies. Not a problem as Super Sonic. You're not only insanely fast, but nigh invulnerable.

Jack's Accelerator Force skill in Wild Arms. A guaranteed first strike. In Alter Code F, it also adds effects to his Fast Draw skills.

As for slowing down time, I remember InFamous had a sort of focus power that slowed down time, made your lightning bolts more focused and effectively allowed you to snipe. That was an interesting one.

And that's about all that I can think of for the time being.

Take the user of any of the previous setups. Now give them the Baby Face's Blaster and the Escape Plan from Team Fortress 2, let them get a single meatshot, and smack them a few times. Bam, 130% speed boost.

Boots 5 from league of legends with homeguard on a Ramus with 4 Phantom dancers. I think my friend said he could reach the enemy fountain in 6 seconds?

heh, yes, I am very familiar with SB, and asking to not get the buff .....

Speed Booster from Metriod. if you know how to use the thing you can go just about anywhere on a single charge

In Vampire: The Masquerade the Discipline of Celerity gives someone up to five extra physical actions per turn, moving, attacking, whatever, at no reduced performance.
It even has an advanced power referred to as "Tireless Tread", which allows one to run at 50 miles/hour (80.5 kilometer/hour) for at least 8 hours.

DnD 3.5e there's a Cleric spell in Complete Champion called Footsteps of the Divine [http://dndtools.eu/spells/complete-champion--57/footsteps-of-the-divine--621/]. It grants you a movement type based on what you choose (they're named after gods, if your god is not the god you choose it halves the duration)

The last three lines are the important part.
"At any point before the duration expires, you can choose to employ a burst of truly inhuman speed.
Doing so adds an additional +10 feet to your speed per round remaining in the spell's duration.
However, this effect lasts for only a single round, after which the spell ends."

1) Worship Vecna
2) Cast Persisted Extended Footsteps of the Divine, choose Vecna (40ft fly speed, perfect maneuverability)
2a) The spell now lasts for 2 full days. 48 hours. Persist makes it last 24 hours, Extend doubles duration.
2b) Yes those are metamagics.
3) Immediately choose to spend the full duration in one round, adding 10ft to your speed per round still available.

2 days = 48 hours = 2880 minutes = 28800 rounds

28800 rounds * 40ft per round = 1152000 ft

1152000 ft = 218.181 miles

In 3 seconds (only takes a move action)

This gives us 72.72 miles per second, or 261818.18 miles per hour. Flying, with perfect maneuverability (can go straight up, straight down, whatever you want)

But that's not all.

Let's say you want to go the fastest speed possible, movement type doesn't matter.

You choose (and worship, obviously) Fharlanghn, the God of Roads, and get +50ft land movement speed.
This is added to your base movement speed.

1 level of Barbarian gives you +10ft movement speed

18 levels of Monk gives you +60ft movement speed (enhancement bonus, which is the same as Expeditious Retreat unfortunately)

The Feral template from Savage Species gives +10ft movement speed (at +1 level adjustment, so we're at 19, which is acceptable)

One level of Psion will give access to the feat Speed of Thought (SRD, so it's in one of the psionic books), which gives +10ft movement speed (insight bonus, so stacks)

The feat Fleet of Foot from Player's Guide to Faerun gives +10ft movement speed

The feat Quick from Unearthed Arcana gives a +10ft movement speed

The feat Dash from Complete Warrior gives +5ft movement speed

Let's make this character a Human so we for sure get access to the Run feat, which lets us run at 5x movement speed rather than just 4x. This only works with medium armor and below, and medium load and below, but a bunch of the other things have similar requirements so it's not an issue.

Let's assume someone else is casting this spell on him since he can't (it's range personal, I know, but there's plenty of ways around that so pick your favorite)

Now lets do some addition.
Human: 30
Barbarian 1: +10
Monk 18: +60
Feral: +10
Speed of Thought: +10
Fleet of Foot: +10
Quick: +10
Dash: +5
Footsteps of the Divine +50
-------------------------------
Total: 195
Run: x5
-------------------------------
Total Running: 975

975ft per round running, times 28800 rounds = 28,080,000 feet, which is 5318.1818 miles in 6 seconds, which is 3,190,909.0909 miles per hour

Let's convert this into meters per second, so we can compare this to some stuff.

3,190,909.0909 miles per hour = 5,135,257,636.3636 meters per hour, which is 1,426,460.4545 meters per second

The speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second. A lot more, but we're still going significantly fast. 0.004758159 times the speed of light, in fact, or about 0.476%.

I did that speed of light math hoping it would lead into some cool time dilation math, but it's just not fast enough.

Depending on the DM, if you're allowed to run and use a swift action, you could do some cool stuff with taking a level in Cleric to let you get Travel Devotion, letting you add your move speed again, which would make the math look something like this

195ft move speed * 28800 rounds = 5,616,000 feet, x6 (5 for running and 1 from your swift action move) would be 33,696,000 feet in 1 round (6 seconds), which is 3,829,090.909 miles per hour, adding almost 700,000 miles per hour to your speed.

Not enough to make it significant in special relativity terms, but still cool. Also cool is that 6381.818 miles is over a quarter of the circumference of the Earth.

If you can find a way to squeeze in 2 more LA, you can pick up the Shadow template which increases base speed of a creature by 50%. On the above human that would give him 217ft base move speed, 267ft move speed with Footsteps on, 1335ft running, and if he blows it all in one round (hell, lets throw in that Travel Devotion trick and say we can somehow) he gets 46,137,600ft movement in one round, which is 5,242,909.0909 miles per hour. 8738.18 miles in one round is a bit over a third of the Earth's circumference.

Interestingly, this is almost precisely the distance between Tokyo and Caracas (8,799 miles) but is even closer to the distance between Hong Kong and Mexico City (8,782 miles).

So, there you have it. Dungeons and Dragons 3.5e, being a boss again.
yes, I choose to repost that entire thing, because I am now cleaning the contents of my head off the computer monitor because that blew my brain. are you a mathmetician by chance, because HOLY CRAP!
