Spelunky XBLA Screens Look Gorgeous

Creator Derek Yu has released a batch of screenshots of Future 2010 Game of the Year contender Spelunky for XBLA, and they look fantastic.

We're not usually the type to post screenshots of unreleased games, but every once in a while you have to make an exception. Yesterday, Derek Yu wrote a brief update to Spelunky's official site in which he discussed his progress on the game's XBLA release, including a number of graphical improvements like bombs with dynamic lighting that throw moving shadows across the walls and water that ripples with every piece of rubble that drops into it. "We're doing everything we can to make it feel new, and totally made for the Xbox 360 ... without losing any of the original game's depth," Yu said.

But the real highlight of the post is the link to four gigantic screenshots Yu posted of the game's first two zones, featuring the same basic models and design that Spelunky players have grown to love, but in a beautiful, high-resolution, hand-painted style - think a slightly less impressionistic version of Braid's colorful artwork.

To hardcore Spelunky fans (and really, there's only one kind of Spelunky fan): You may want start considering picking up a 360 if you don't already own one.

Them screenshots sure do look pritty.
I sort of think the game suits the old graphics however, I'm not fully sure why though.

Bout time Derek Yu got recognition in the industry.

*is blissfully unaware of any other recognition Derek Yu has had in the 'industry'*

Y'know what would be awesome? The ability to switch between old and new graphics like Monkey Island, though I doubt that'll happen.

Well, I sure never heard of him. Or Spelunky. Looks good though. Nice to see another arcade game that wows like Shadow Complex.

I am used to the big pixel art, which I happen to really like.
It'll take some time getting used to this version, but I'm pretty sure I'll be spending some money.
If you haven't yet, you should definitely try the Windows version.

I have no idea what Spelunky is - but I'm glad I do now. Kinda reminds me of Pitfall 2, except it's hopefully not shitty.

It's a super keen mashup of the roguelike and platformer genres. It's crazy good. You should try the windows version considering it's free and all.

I'll be buying this. Count on it.

Getting my 360 out of the cupboard and going through the hassle of connecting all the cables would be a sign of my hardcore dedication to this product.

The Cave Story and La-Mulana remakes are coming to WiiWare so be twice as sure to get a Wii if you are a hardcore gamer.

Thankfully I already do. I should look into La Mulana, as well. Although I've heard good things about it, I haven't played it yet.

They look really good... but since I don't have live, I'll have to stick to the PC version, which I find cute anyway.

Hey, the source code is out. Has anyone made a Mac version already?
