Main problem with Spider-Man 3 was the 'too many villains going on at the same time' and 'force feeded emotional issues'... not to mention that many characters litteraly 'de-volved' back to pre-Spider-Man 2 mindset. It was a storytelling mess.
However, the Sandman looked pretty cool, a lot of the fights were really great, the movie was overall funny (It's mainly when it tried to be dramatic that it failed). And while it didn't really have anything to do with the way the comic portrayed it, I thought emo-parker was hilarious.
It wasn't by any mean a good movie (it was fairly bad), but it wasn't atrocious either.
It seems people's hate of spider-man 3 is very closely linked to how dear Venom is has a character to them. Many younger spidey fan started reading in the 90s, where Venom was a big deal. Or they never read comics and just watch the animated serie, which also made a big deal of Venom. A lot of them were infuriated to see what they consider the 'greatest' spidey villain ever so poorly handled.
I took a break from comic book right before Venom was introduced and kinda missed the whole deal. I came back to Marvel in the 2000s and well, Venom is still around, but his role has a spider-man villain has taken a backseat (What with being in the Thunderbolts, than Dark Avenger and the fact that Eddie Brock doesn't even wear the suit anymore) to other things. So venom's butchering didn't really bother me. I was much more annoyed at the flimsy 'The sandman is the guy who REALLY killed your uncle!' thing they threw in...
