notice: this is a duplicate thread i made by accident. when i posted the original thread there was an issue with my internet and i didnt think it posted, so i made this one...clearly, i was mistaken
original thread is here:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.235181-why-do-people-like-the-kotor-series-so-much#8349359

why do people like these games?

kotor 1 was the most boring game i have ever played, in every way. combat was BORING, the story was BORING, the characters were BORING, and character development was just pathetic (not as bad as in final fantasy 12 but still pretty bad). combat for me went "flurry,flurry,flurry...done" i didnt even need force powers. the game just felt tedious, especially the star forge.

kotor 2 i actually thought was a good game. combat was more smooth, the story had an element of mystery that actually made me care about what the outcome would be. but it was so buggy it was unplayable. was this game even play tested before release? for games that get so much praise i was expecting so much better.

im sure ill get flamed for this because everyone seems to love these games but please tell me what im missing because other than the star wars license and pretty good voice acting, i cant find anything game of the year worthy...maybe 2003 was just a really slow year

Keeping in mind that the game IS 7 years old, it is still one of the classic examples of how an RPG should be made. Uninteresting characters? There are few greater characters than HK-47, Carth Onasi is still a cult fave, and Bastilla's evolution as you slowly regain your powers and learn your true identity is perfect.

The combat is EXACTLY THE SAME in both games, minus a few powers. If you liked the second one's combat, then there should have been no complaints about the first.

Tedious? Games are usually trashed for being too easy, but tedious is not something I have heard before about KoToR. The Star Forge is right where the game gets amazing for me. It's no cakewalk, and the final battle with Malak remains one of my favourites because of it's difficulty and it's set up. Do you destroy the pods containing the jedi, killing them? Or do allow them to become lifless husks as Malak uses their force energy against you? Not to mention Malak has some insane abilities that test even the best RPG players.

And while we're on story, Your player turning out to be a former dark lord of the sith? Thats a plot twist that has few equals.

This is of course just me, but for me, this is one of the best games I've played. If you love RPG's, this (for most) is exactly what you should want to play.

This, and it's an opinion.

I think KOTOR is still one of the best around. Few RPGs in the last 5 years can stand on the same level as KOTOR.
The you-are-the-sith-lord move was gloriously awesome, rivaled only by the ending of InFamous and Shadow of the Colossus in terms of great story twists.
For characters, HK-47 is one of the all time greats. Standing among other all time greats such as Mordin and Tali (both of whom happens to be Bioware creations).
Combat was so-so. Serviceable and not slow in the way that turn-based combat can be, even though that is essentially what it is. It can also get terribly difficult when necessary.

I'm now interested to hear what game you consider to be great RPGs, since you just tore apart KOTOR.

I've only played the 2nd one and only recently, I pretty much found it unplayable what with glitches and whatnot and the story was a little dull. Then again I only got a few hours in so it probably gets better, I'll end up giving it another chance but it was way to buggy for me.

Haven't played the 1st one so I'm indifferent on that front.

Don't forget Wrex.

Also: Meatbag.

And I played KOTOR all the way to end, and I loved it.

Hell even the damn Wookie got character development.

Well that's only you. Really, boring story, characters ?
Are we talking about KOTOR or something else because KOTOR doesn't have any of those problems you listed.
I know that not everybody can love a game but you are REALLY a minority in this one.
I played a shitload of games and I've never seen a story as engaging as in KOTOR.

It sure was good of you to post two threads on this exact same subject within less than a day of each other.

From what you just said it sounds a lot like Dragon Age: Origins: BORING. Also I haven't played it but I think it's probably overrated.

Not really in mood for flaming, and well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but i am curious, which RPG do you consider to be good and what kind of games do you usually enjoy ?

I agree that KOTOR II was ridiculous when it cam to glitches. (i had to play with sound and movies disabled just to get it to start but eventually just got it to just sound disabled) and even without voice acting i still loved the game. I never played the first though. i can't even find it anywhere.

Nope, not by a long shot. that title is still being fought over by Bioshock and that last Final Fantasy Abortion.
