SpongeBob Squarepants Goes Live-Action/3D in New Movie Trailer

Nicktoons heroes battle live-action evil on dry land in long-awaited sequel

Want to feel old? It has been a full ten years since the original SpongeBob Squarepants movie. Two generations (and counting) of fans have been clamoring for a sequel the whole time, and now Nickelodeon has debuted the first trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, in which the champions of Bikini Bottom will appear for the first time in 3D opposite live-action human actors.

In the sequel (which also includes scenes rendered in the series traditional 2D animation), Antonio Banderas appears as an evil pirate seeking a powerful magic relic hidden in SpongeBob and friends' undersea community of Bikini Bottom. When he succeeds in stealing it - placing both the ocean and surface worlds in peril - SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Plankton and Mr. Krabs must undertake the perilous journey to the human world to confront him (which is where the 3D kicks in); ultimately making use of the stolen magic themselves to become human-sized superheroes.

While SpongeBob characters have ventured onto land before, in the series it was typically accomplished using intentionally-crude live-action puppets of realistic-looking sea creatures. In the first movie, SpongeBob and Patrick were depicted as remaining animated when on dry land, but only so long as they didn't dry out. They also encountered a human ally in the form of Baywatch star David Hasselhoff.

Sponge Out of Water is currently targeting a February 2015 release date.

All I'm going to say is that I'm Cautiously optimistic about the film. Because that commercial for it was surprisingly funny.

i dont expect much, during the last couple of years (after the first movie) spongebob has been mediocre at best, and disgustingly awful at worst

As much as I don't care for Spongebob anymore, this did make me smile. A lot. Oh, nostalgia. Fuck I feel old.

That said, I feel that this should end Spongebob. He's become the Simpsons; he's run his course and where the movie is a fitting end, they just kept going.

The 3d art style looks pretty cool, that said I'm probably not going to go to a theater just to see this but if it ever comes to netflix... then we'll see.

Supposedly Hillenberg is back on board for this movie so I'm hoping it has some of the magic that the show had prior to and during the original movie.

Spongebob is supposed keep running til 2018 unless they renew when the time comes.

OT: Looked mildly amusing, I feel it might end up becoming another Smurfs which would be the worst possible thing to happen.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Well, for a cartoon going into the real world movie this looks pretty good. Still have no interest in seeing it though.

It doesn't look like fried shit. Therefore, it's better than every other live action adaptation of cartoons so far.

I'm usually pretty...tetchy when it comes to adapting cartoons into a three-dimensional format to accommodate the fish-out-of-water real-world adventure. But it looks like they're maintaining the cartoony goofiness, so it looks like the trailer's putting its best foot forward. It would have been worrying to see a bunch of pop culture references, but I'm interested (if only for nostalgia's sake).

Okay, I had many bad feelings with this just by seeing the headline, but just a couple seconds into the trailer, this makes up for it.

I'm praying that this was intentional

This trailer proves that the animation will be good and the jokes won't be cringe-inducing. Also, the people who got rights to the music knew what they were doing. You all are "cautiously optimistic", but I'm simply optimistic.

I wonder how they're going to justify the protagonists (sans Sandy of course) being able to breath on land (considering the need for water helmets was a common thing in the show).

SpongeBob and friends have always been inconsistent with being able to breathe on land. Just look at the first movie. When SpongeBob and Patrick are laying on that table, they are struggling to breathe until the sprinklers go off. And yet, for some odd reason when they get outside onto what looks like a nice summer day at the beach, they can breathe fine.

And then there was some episode where Spongebob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward were making fun of Sandy for not being a water breather. Sandy decides to dare them to go up towards the surface, and they could breathe fine up there as well, although a seagull started chasing them. So I don't think there will be any explanations necessary.

OT: I was surprised at how amusing that trailer was, considering how bad SpongeBob has become in recent years. I think I'll be cautiously optimistic about this movie, and hopefully it will be as good as, if not better than, the first movie.

So that's why this trailer made me laugh more than every horrific Spongebob episode after the first movie...

/thread.

Joking aside, I too am both optimistic/worried about this. Will it recapture the golden age of Spongebob or will just get episodes like...

Oh goody. Let me guess, it's going to be a 90-minute Squidward torture porn, and--

...Wait, that actually wasn't too bad?

...Huh. Then it might have a chance.

as little as I care about Sponge bob I'm glad their not just getting rid of the 2D thing because its "out" as far as movies go but instead sorta giving it a logical trasition

and the characters actually work pretty well in 3D too
