Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is poised to offer a new race, new dungeons, and more.

Square Enix held the Final Fantasy XIV Fanfest today in Las Vegas, during which game director Naoki Yoshida took the stage for his keynote and dropped a major bomb on the MMO's massive fanbase.

Final Fantasy XIV will be seeing the release of Heavensward, the very first expansion pack for the game since its debut last year for PlayStation 3 and PC. The expansion is set for a spring 2015 launch, and will bring it a plethora of new content, all of which will be included as the 3.09 update to the game.

Yoshida announced that the level cap will raise to 60 and the update will introduce new high end raids, jobs, Primals, and dungeons. Additionally, a new, unspecified race will be introduced, though it won't be the Viangaa, as rumors and popular belief indicated.

The expansion is set to tell the tale of a conflict that's raged on for a thousand years between Ishgard and Dravania that players will be tasked with drawing to a close, with large expanses opening up for exploration via airships and more.

Unfortunately, these were all the details shared during the keynote speech, but Final Fantasy XIV's hardcore masses can look forward to additional information about the upcoming expansion pack during the London Fan Festival on October 25.

In the meantime, a trailer was released to sate our hunger for the upcoming additional content, so check that out and see if you can spot any cool additional content that might be on the horizon.

More F.A.T.E.'s ... Going to have to try harder to get my money again. Got to be too boring for me with too much grind and too hard to find a capable group of adventurers.

I'm still astounded how much support this game gets. While the grind is still there, they're doing a fantastic job giving this game more life and content on a consistent basis to warrant the monthly fee. They add more content than I can keep up with.

Awesome :D

FFXIV has sort of rekindled a bit of my love for MMOs as a genre after I got burned out on WoW. It's got its problems, but it's doing a lot of things right and it's nice to see that it keeps growing. Hopefully in the future it can grow into something unique as well as something good :)

The way things are going with FF, this one is probably the most visually stunning On Rails Shooter you've ever seen.

Yeah. Makes me glad I saved my makeover potion vet reward! I'm hoping for Moogles, or maybe a borrowing from other FF properties? I'd be a Viera or a Nu Mou in a heartbeat.

They've teased it with a character that has a lizard-like tail, though her head is covered with a veil... but think less Viera and more Bangaa.

Dark Knight also pretty much confirmed, maybe even between 2.4 (out in 8 days) and 3.0.

Given the focus on Dragons, it seems likely it'll be Bangaa, though my personal hope is Viera or Ivalician Moogles at some point.

Also, my intepretation is that Dark Knight is one of the classes coming in 3.0, though I've also heard rumors poining at Samurai, and they also said someting that hinted at Melee DPS version of Red Mages.

Yugiri's been around since 2.2, there was also what was probably just a joke in a seasonal event where an npc said that a race known as Viengaa raise elbst for the adventurer's guild. Maybe she's that? Domans seem to be more a nationality than a race.

The Dark Knight out before 3.0 thing came around from some news that supposedly said a second job would be squeezed in before 3.0 but I doubt that'd be the case. What I'm hearing is we'll see either Samurai or Musketeer pretty soon as the tank additions, and a new healer with 3.0

They really need to bring out some more tank and healer jobs to get more people into those roles.

Final Fantasy, continuing in the proud tradition of fielding simultaneously highly ironic and essentially unpronounceable game titles. See also: Fabula Nova Crystallis and Theatrhrythm.

I don't think it matters how many more healer and tank roles they add to the game, most people just don't want the stress of playing them or simply don't have the connection for it. Among the new expansion info also came news of adding mounts and minions to the cash shop. Not too happy about that personally. :(

The Viengaa were an April Fools Day joke hybrid of the Viera and the Bangaa, and it was also explicitly said it wasn't them anyway. Given the rumors of Samurai, they might be the ones before 3.0, but we also know that Musketeers are coming at SOME point.

But either way, we'll find out the answer, at least as far as classes are concerned, on Saturday, because they have an event in London on the 25th, that they said they'd give more info at.

True, because I mostly ran with PUGs I was hesitant to keep on being a Warrior in endgame while I got used to greater difficulty... and now I'm mostly a Dragoon. Thankfully my FC has two paladins and four other warriors to cover the tanking.

I don't really care that they have a cash shop as long as it remains cosmetic. Being able to buy tomestones would be a huge red flag; conversely some minions, a mount, and discontinued event gear doesn't bother me.

I figured they were a joke, I remember some Akihiko Yoshida doodle of them. But if they wanted to make a bangaa-like race more human for the sake of gear and modeling issues the female build he did is not a bad jumping point.

I wonder if Musketeer will be tank or healer, though Merlwyb's display in the Leviathan quests leads me to believe that it's definitely not a healer.

I was going to make some joke about how we'd have another FF game to add to development hell, where we might see it in playable form 5-6 years from now on the Playstation 5 and Xbone 2: Bone Harder.

Then I read the article, and realized it wasjust an expansion for their MMO.

Then I decided to be all post-modern about my non-joke, like a some sort of stupid ironic forum hipster.

Recently got back into this. The production values on this game are so high, it actually feels like a massive world because travelling from one end of a map to another can take up to 20 minutes. The player base is huge too, so all the cities feel packed to the brim.

Since I can use one character to go through all the classes, and can switch instantaneously between them, I found the leveling experience a lot more fun. Looking forward to 2.4 and 3.0.

Frankly I don't blame them for not wanting that pressure. The abuse I have suffered as a tank sometimes is ridiculous.

"Wanna know why that thing came off mid-pull healer? Because you fucking healed before I flashed."

I'm a good tank, not great, not god-tier, but good, solid, reliable, I get hate and I keep it, and I survive through what I pull, people are just too willing to blame you for their mistakes.

Though it goes both ways, I've had many a tank snarl and hurl abuse at me as DPS for doing something he disliked. One once lost his sh it over me using Shadow Flare. No idea why, it's a potent AoE dot and the slow effect acts as damage reudction on the tank.
