Square Enix Releases Extended Final Fantasy XV Gameplay Trailer

A new Final Fantasy XV trailer shows off Behemoth battles and gigantic swords.

Final Fantasy fans were likely a happy crowd walking away from Sony's E3 press conference last night. In addition to confirming that the long-awaited Final Fantasy XIII Versus was, in fact, alive and well, Square Enix revealed that the game was <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/10375-Square-Enix-The-Future-of-FFXV-FFXIV-and-Kingdom-Hearts-III?utm_source=features&utm_medium=index_carousel&utm_campaign=all>being re-branded as Final Fantasy XV and would sit alongside the rest of the series as a full-fledged sequel. Accompanying this reveal was new footage showcasing the game's story and gameplay. Now, Square Enix has released a new trailer showing off the game's combat in even greater depth.

After beginning with a brief "work in progress/subject to change" disclaimer the trailer jumps right into the action, showing protagonist Noctis being unceremoniously mauled by a massive Behemoth. Neatly, the Behemoth's attacks also cause damage to the surrounding area. It smashes through a pole and knocks a nearby vehicle aside. Next the trailer shows off a sequence where Noctis, descending some steps, comes under fire by enemy solders. Their attacks are deflected by some sort of force field and Noctis is then joined by a pair of allies. While the trailer never seems to show the player directly controlling allied characters, they're shown at various points fighting alongside Noctis in battle and even helping to perform special attacks and finishing moves.

The combat also comes across as being very fluid. As seen in the most recent trailer Noctis seems quite maneuverable, able to dodge, roll, and teleport around the battlefield. Noctis also seems able to switch between weapons on the fly, at some points wielding smaller weapons and at others whipping out a gigantic sword that would make Cloud proud. All in all, the gameplay looks to be of a decidedly different breed from the menu driven combat systems that the series has generally stuck to in the past.

Nice to see the characters having some synergy between them. Though whoever is playing the footage here is fucking awful.
Seriously, they hit like 1/10 of their attacks. This hurt to watch. Still, if this is basically Kingdom Hearts but with a standalone story and a more mature theme I'm all up for it.

Needs moar explosions.

That was pretty damn sexy. If the gameplay stays like that then this is pretty much a must buy from me.
Damn. About time Square did something right!

I did not expect to be interested by the next Final Fantasy game, but FFXV somehow managed to grab my attention. I...I can't explain it! Is it the combat system that seems to be doing something different than the usual "line up and whack each other?" Is it the characters that no longer look like they fell through a belt factory located in the Uncanny Valley? Is it the setting that looks like City 17 meets Gotham? I don't know.

My opinion may change, but for the first time in 20 years, Square Enix you have my attention!

I see a shortcut method for magic and Noctis' weapon changing periodically based on how many attacks are used or how many weapons a special attack uses. I'd like an explanation on how warp, linkmode, and the blue bar in the lower-right is used eventually. Hopefully most of the warps against the guys on the walls are player inputs, that would just be the game playing itself.

I'm really hyped for this.

I'm rather speechless.
I had not been following Versus prior to this at all, so this came way out of left field for me.

The battle system actually looks like a logical evolution from the previous, being even more action based, while still retaining the command menu.

For the first time in a very long time, I'm fairly excited about a Final Fantasy game, because that looks pretty fun.

Does anyone know anything about how linear/nonlinear the game will be?
I think even if it turns out to be as one way as FF13 was, if the combat is as fun as it looks, I may not care.

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but the combat against the behemoth in particular seemed to remind me of Dark Souls a bit; it mostly showed in the way the giant beast moved, in a way which suggested how it was going to attack and that you should do your damnedest to avoid it (I doubt the difficulty will be there).

Of course, the way the player character moved was definitely against the methodology seen in that particular game; much more agile and less defensively-minded, with heaps of teleporting. Hard to say what exactly the gameplay resembles most in that aspect, but Kingdom Hearts definitely comes to mind.

---

This could be interesting, and hopefully Square is taking notes from other successful RPGs; not to the point of copying off of them, but to help pin down what they've been struggling to accomplish the last several years. The FF series has certainly slipped a bit, but this seems to have at least some traction and/or potential... then again, so have many of their other recent titles.

Here's hoping for the best.

I'm with the crowd that thinks that the last good FF game was FFX, and that menu driven combat is part of what made the series great. In FF12 they ditched it completely in favor of a wonky semi-automated system together with some of the dullest characters the series have ever had, and in FF13 they might've gone back to the old system again (sort of, kinda..) but instead forgot to implement player freedom.

This new FF15 isn't developed by the usual team, but instead is spearheaded by the same guy who made Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, and it shows. What this'll mean is probably that the game will be pretty fun, but also very easy (KH is all about the X button mashing, whereas in FFX there were plenty of encounters that could just flat out murder you if you went in without thinking).
Not that that in itself is necessarily a bad thing. A kingdom-hearts:ish FF will probably work just fine, and I'll likely enjoy it quite a bit, but I still hope for a time when Squeenix can finally make a good oldskool style FF again.

Super cool. Seems like everytime you attack, you cycle between a list of sword like weapons that you would probably equip beforehand. Or you can choose which weapon you want to use, hard to tell at this point.

The Behemoth they showed off here seems quite a bit different than the one from a few years ago. A much bigger improvement in my opinion. I think it looks really cool!

Seems fighting areas are pretty large in scale, unless its dictated by certain story sequences or something. Still, having Noctis teleport all over the place and sticking his sword(s) into buildings to get to higher places and killing dudes at the same time is really cool.

I know they said you could take control of the other party members and that it was game over if Noctis himself died, but I wonder if that is still the same (the dying part I mean). On the fly control would be pretty neat, and it looks like Blondie will have designated shooter elements. I'm guessing they would have a completely different skill set than Noctis and his dozen swords and whatnot.

I wonder if the parts where your party members help out are going to be based on some skill/stat or a meter? I don't think it will be too situational, but I suppose we'll see more. That last bit where all three go on the attack actually reminds me a bit of the Limit Breaks/Reaction Commands from KH2, and those fusion attacks in Dream Drop Distance, only much, much cooler.

The gameplay still seems a bit like "early" stuff (though I think its mostly due to the gauges and whatnot), but its still very similar to what they showed off a few years ago (which isn't a bad thing). Hopefully this isn't too far off for what they have in mind.

And for some reason, I really liked how Noctis stumbled a bit after avoiding the Behemoth in the beginning. I know its something really small, but I really enjoyed that. Take all my money Square!

EDIT:

A few years ago they released a trailer for it that showed a pretty open field like area. It sort of reminded me of the Gran Pulse areas of FF13 and 13-2 (though unknown if in similar size). At the very least, it didn't look like painted corridors that FF13 took you on for most of the time. As for if the whole game is like that? I don't know, but judging from the trailers they showed at E3 and whatnot, the areas seem to be quite big, even if it is only a select few. If you look for a 2011 Versus trailer on youtube, you can sort of see what I mean.

Hope that helps, its been quite a while since I looked into anything Versus related. =p

W-w-wait there, Square. Is this...a GAMEPLAY trailer? As in showing us what we would be experiencing in gameplay? You ok? No offense there, but I'm impressed. Oh sure it had fancy editing, but come on, baby steps!

This looks like a cross between Kingdom Hearts and Bayonetta. Not against that at all. In fact, I'm rather intrigued. This has to be the only modern Final Fantasy I've been really anticipating. Been thinking of playing X, but not enough to make me feel arsed to play it. Actually playing through FFIX right now (the only other one I played was VII).

So they went with real weapon physics this time. Fun to see him slash a dozen times with rapier, get some sweet combos with the long sword, and then try and use the claymore against the behemoth, only to have it paw him against the wall because of the lack of speed. I like that.

Overall, trailer and gameplay look amazing, but after FFXIII, I'll need to see more before I get it day one.
and this are both exactly how i'm feeling.

this looks like the square i know and remember, brought up to speed on what modern gamers are looking for. holy fuck, so much want.

(but as mentioned, will watch cautiously...NOT GETTING SUCKED INTO ANOTHER FF13 FUCKPOOP GAME.)

Didn't think I would be optimistic about a Final Fantasy game after 13, but this actually looks good. Seems to be a bit more of an action game than old Final Fantasy so I think I'll just call it Final Fantasy Rising: Rebrandance for now.

FF12 was menu driven with an optional automated system.

Between that and your description of the characters I feel like you didn't play it.

But to each their own.

The combat in Final Fantasy XV looks like it will be both amazing and fun. This is how the combat in Final Fantasy XIII should have been done. When XV launches I plan on purchasing it on release day.
