Square Enix Sings a Voice Fantasy

In Square Enix's new Final Fantasy spin-off, evil can only be defeated by players with a strong enough voice.

Square Enix has released its fair share of iPhone titles over the past couple of years, and its latest is Voice Fantasy. Just made available today, Voice Fantasy pits its players' voices against the forces of the evil Demon King.

Instead of being able to choose your hero as in previous Final Fantasy titles, Voice Fantasy creates one for you based on your own voice. Voice Fantasy asks players to shout their hero's name into the phone, with the pitch and volume determining what kind of hero is summoned. Each hero has a different job, so a loud and low voice might summon a warrior, while a high voice could summon an archer. Square Enix also says that the heroes' personalities are affected by the voice that creates them. I can yell really loud, so I know my Voice Fantasy warrior would be extra strong, but a complete and total jerk.

Voice Fantasy is purely about battling and features both single-player and multiplayer modes. The single-player mode puts you up against the varied forces of the Demon King, while multiplayer battles can be either one-on-one or two-on-two. Two voices may enter, but only one will leave.

What I like about Square Enix's offerings on the iPhone is that many of them are developed specifically for the platform and take advantage of its strengths. First-person shooters might be possible on cellphones, but they're just not meant for them. With Voice Fantasy, Square Enix used the abilities of the iPhone to create a simple $3 product you wouldn't really see anywhere else, aside from perhaps DSiWare, and tied it into its key franchise. The game is at least a bit of creativity on a platform that sees a lot of clones and lame games.

So from what I've learned from this, if I got this game then my party would solely consist of very quiet & unassuming archers.

Still, sounds like an interesting concept.

I don't get the point of having this on a portable system. On a subway or bus are people going to really want to be seen yelling and then whispering back and forth like some crazy person into an electronic device? Come to think of it maybe cell phones users may already be like that. All right carry on...

Incredi-lame.

I almost dropped my jaw at the first line of this article.

"In Square Enix's new Final Fantasy spin-off, evil " as my mind was in overdrive at the notion of an "Evil" SE title... until i finished reading the sentence and was utterly dissapointed.

Its like I dunno, asking for a Sci Fi action flick / lesbian porno and being given Rocky horror picture show in return.

Not cool.

Oh god, Squeenix just popped out what the Macross universe has been doing for years: defeating the forces of evil through song. Annoying......annoying........song.

While thoroughly awesome in it's own right, I do see some complications, especially when public transport is involved.

But the point of iPhone games is that you can discreetly play them on the bus with headphones on!

With this... you can't. Although, I'd love to go to Japan just to see hundreds of people screaming into their DSes (Shut up, you know that that's exactly what happens over there).

What Western series would have a "voice-make"?

In any case, all the comments seem to be about how you must be constantly yelling, is that the case? It sounded like you do it once and the rest of your game you have that hero. It is not like your moves are tied to your...

...THAT IS IT!

Ooooookaaaaaay...erm maybe Square-Enix should try and dig Final Fantasy out of it's hole instead of just screaming from it...

one, how many people are seriously good enough singers to be able to a) have access to every class/ability/whatever, or b)even care. most people are awful singers. just look at youtube if you need proof.

two, this is my problem with game designers, they just dont think about what exactly they are making. seriously, you play iphone games when you are on the go. usually for a few minutes at a time, but almost always in a public area. WHO THE HELL HAS THE BALLS to play this in public.

three, this is just a plain stupid concept. a singing rpg? wow. voice commands are one thing, singing commands are a whole other ballpark... of complete stupid.

if this is squareenix's idea of moving the stagnant jrpg genre forward, then i feel hopeless for jrpgs.

also, what happened to the whole "we aren't going to rehash the final fantasy franchise" thing they said a while ago? oh, that was bullshit? who would have thought.
