So I'm totally computers-retarted, right, and I'm trying to figure out how to get it to run on my current monitor. Its native resolution is 1280x1024, and after a half hour or so on Google, I'm still trying to figure out how to change the res settings without being in game. Anyone know anything about this sort of issue, or should I post more specific computer info...?

Why don't you just change it in-game ? the screen will be warped a little first time around but it should be readable enough to go and change the resolution...

Sorry if my first post wasn't clear, I'm sick and therefore kind of out of it.

STALKER won't function with my monitor. When I attempt to start up the game, the screen goes to black and says something about the monitor having some sort of compatibility issue with what I'm trying to run, then control+alt+delete does not just exit the program like it should, and I have to hold the power button a few seconds to force-reset the whole computer to get it working.

I just a few hours ago bought and installed it on Steam. It should be fully updated, my Steam account is set up to automatically fully update.

Humm it might not be the monitor...what spec is your computer? what graphics card etc, maybe you should try and update your graphic drivers?

On-board graphics. Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Family, 2.7 GHz dual-core. Windows 7, 64-bit. This isn't so much a "gaming computer" as it is a computer I use for gaming. If you need any more info, just say the word.

Your 2nd(?) post does seem to indicate a resolution (or more often refresh rate) issue, however I'd be shocked if the game would run at on with onboard graphics?

Anyway, from digging through the config files I found this one - ...\Steam\steamapps\common\stalker shadow of chernobyl\_appdata_\user.ltx

Which has the following two lines -

rs_refresh_60hz on
vid_mode 1280x1024

It may well be those that control the settings, but given the problems I had getting it running originally I'm not going to mess about with it to test it!

You ever turned on the screen before the computer and had it say something about "Digital Input" or "Analog Input" in the center of the screen? That is the sort of screen I see, and it says:

1: Analog Input
Cannot Display This Video Mode
Optimum Resolution 1280x1024 60 Hz

I hear the game's title screen audio, but the image never shows.

Right click on STALKER in your steam library and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
In the General tab select SET LAUNCH OPTIONS...
Type '-h 1280 -w 1024' without the quotation marks and click OK.
Launch the game and pray that worked.

You haven't said you recieved any error report, so I assume you haven't. So I have an odd sugestion: Have you tried waiting?

This may seem like some liberal hyperbole on my part, but I am speaking literally when I say this:
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R engine has MAJOR compatability problems with my laptop, this manifests as low FRAPS, and almost humerously long loading times. When I boot up any one of the series, it takes nearly 10 minutes to get to the title screen, I get a black screen, and then the game's menu boots up.
If you try waiting, you may be able to tell if this is the same issue you are having. If so, you may as well quit, it's unfixable as far as I know. Renders the game nearly unplayble. Starting a new game takes, at last count, 46 minutes to load. Loading a saved file takes about 29. So when you die, you have a 29 minute wait to play again.
My version is steam as well.

No effect. Are you positive you typed that in properly? Was I supposed to put in a space, and was I meant to put in the apostrophes?

Where'd you put a space in?

Between the "h" and the "1280" and between the "w" and the "1024". I did not put in the quotations, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't supposed to. Still nothing.

Yes, those spaces are supposed to be there, odd that it wouldn't work. Have you tried 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache' on the off chance that works?

No luck. I also edited that setting in Notepad, and it still had no effect. Even changing it to 640x480 still wouldn't get it running.

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas then. I recommend asking on the steam forums, they'll likely know more than us. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=313

Be sure to say what you've already tried.

Integrated graphics are somewhat mediocre usually, this might not help but you might wanna check to be sure your computer can actually run it.

256 MB DirectX 9c compatible card/ nVIDIA GeForce 7900/ ATI Radeon X1850.

I personally use "Can you run it?" it takes 2 minutes and you have your answer...
