Star Citizen is BIG

It's a 110GB download that means if your internet sucks like mine it will take you days to download! I doubt this game will be workable for years unless you like paying download charges and having nothing else on your hard drive. This is the first game in history where you could set the download going, go on a short break, come home and the download would only be at 75%.

I've got an unlimited 80 megabit fibre optic connection. Well, I personally get download speeds of between 7 and 8 megabytes per second but it's still good enough. No extra charges.

*shrug* I've got a 500 gig SSD. For Windows.

C, D, E -> SSD
F, G -> HDD
I -> External HDD

Yeah, I've not been uninstalling some games, because I'm lazy like that. It's not like I've not the space to spare. For the record, I've got another 250 gig for Linux. I think I can fit Star Citizen + Solitaire, at least.

Assuming I'm downloading it at 7 MB/s, it's take me about 4 and a half hours to download it. Sure, it's not few minutes, like all other games, currently, but it's still shorter than downloading any game when I had 10 Mbps. First game? Hardly.

110 GB... Download time. Around an hour. ^^

But for people that can't get high speeds. I would hope that they employ a P2P system for this and at least get it in good sizeable chunks when you leave it on over night.

As for having enough space... 3TB just for Steam.

But it's a new generation people and for games to keep the wow factor up they will grow larger. I mean I remember when 1.44MB was enough to hold two games + Save games.
Times are changing.

I predict a lot of digital flexing to go on in this thread, as the two posters above me have demonstrated, thank you very much.

By my download speed with this provider, i will need around 60 hours to get this bad boy in. Luckily i have about 3 terra with all my drives combined. I guess it's time to start deleting some porn.

This will be the game I spend a massive amount of research on before buying. I'm super interested, but i can see myself forced to upgrade to a bigger[footnote]and more expensive[/footnote] scheme from my provider. This adds cost. Basically a hidden and unintended subscription fee.

Hey, OP literally told me I will not be able to get this game based on some arbitrary conditions he made up. I had a duty

This is a huge installation size for a game, true. But while I'm the sort who celebrates the advantages new technology brings us, and not the kind who feels that others should suffer the way I did, when I read things like this:

All I can say is, "Come back when you've had to spend six weeks downloading a Wing Commander expansion pack on a 56K line from a server that doesn't support download interrupters, kid."
Also, get off my lawn.

If I do end up buying this, which I'm not really sure about seeing as I have Elite Dangerous already(I understand they are different games, but they scratch the same itch), I would consider getting another hard drive.

I dont even want to think about how long this game would take me to download. Star Citizen just seems silly to me. So silly.

I think we should worry less about how big it will supposedly be and more about its endless feature-creep and gross overshooting of its own budget. Just my 2 cents.

First game in history!? Bit melodramatic isn't it?

I used to download 3+ gig files on a 56k dial-up modem. taking 30+ hours to download something wasn't uncommon...

Fortunately, I have broadband now. Without a download cap, because those suck and I refuse to take any internet plan that has one just on principle, but...

Anyway, OK, sure, with just 14 megabits download 110 gigs will still take a while, but that's irrelevant... XD

Besides, I have X-plane 10 installed. With all the scenery installed, that pushes 60 gigs, and it's not even that detailed when you compare it to what's going on in Star Citizen...

So... Eh. Get used to it. This is going to be normal soon enough. That's technology for you.

Actually Chris Roberts and co. stopped increasing the game's features once the funding had reached 65 million, now their funding stands at 75 million, so no there's no endless feature creep and at this point I don't think they'll overshoot their budget.

Pretty much locks out anyone not living in a city or place with half decent broadband here in the UK. I get around 100 kb/s download speed in my village, so even thinking about downloading this is not possible for me. The internet speeds and infrastructure for a lot of places are gonna need updating before crazy sizes like this become the norm.

The real question is, is it just padded with uncompress files? Or just doest it really feature so much content?

I wish most of my games downloaded that quickly. This will take me week to download at least and by weeks I don't mean "I downloaded for a few hours each day" I mean 24 hours multiplied by 7 weeks.
I redownloaded League of Legends recently and I had to leave my computer on downloading it for three straight days to get it. It took me over 76 hours to download the 2 GB I needed for it.

Well 100GB is the install size, does not mean that will be the download size. If they used 7zip compressors that could very well come down to 20GB or less. And yes this is mostly down to gigantic 67.1 megapixel textures on everything, if uncompressed that is 200MB per texture.

I have a sneaking suspicion this game will offer no compromises, so far everything has been made on the basis of "either you ride the extreme PC enthusiast train or you do not play".

Love it when devs dont compress their games to show off assets.
It's a PC exclusive indie AAAA game (not a typo). Why would they settle for anything less than perfection when they don't have the publishers and other entities breathing down their necks? They have a vision and their approach is obviously "no compromises". That's amazing. That's what game developers should all strive towards. It's not something that we should dismiss with cynical comments.
