Huh. So what was EA's former 'most expensive project in history?' Is it being expensive a cause for hope, or is it just something interesting to know?

Two answers:

A. Duke Nukem Forever, a massive and embarassing debacle.

B. Valve and Blizzard, who always put out very high quality products (they just take longer).

Allow him to type the way he wants, the internet is not like a novel.

Besides, there already a thread for that nerd rage.

I just made the correction. I never told him how to type. It is an OCD type thing for me. Sorry that I was just trying to correct someone's mistake and possibly improve their grammar.
No...you didn't do anything wrong, in fact you actually a great big help.

It's just, some people nitpick over very small things in writing like my english teacher who is a classic type of grammar Nazi, so much that he is refer as 'The Nazi.'

Again you didn't do anything wrong.

The improper grammar is killing me. "Are there jet packs?" would have been the proper way to phrase that question.
*Claps hands*

Bravo! Your initiation to the hall of Grammar Nazis is beginning!
No dude, it happened long ago. I'm sorry, but it just gets to me. My mom is an english major, so I was honed to write as perfect as I can.

And I'm assuming there are jet packs, because the trailer portrayed a bounty hunter with one.
Perfectly as I can? ;) I quote Muphrys law!

EA have set themselves quite a challenge it seems, they couldn't have picked a harder market to crack. I wonder if the subscription fees are going to be anything like WoW?
I don't think you could have much of a chance with a smaller budget. WAR was a valiant effort, and I think its a shame that it kinda failed, becuase I believe the Warhammer universe is far more interesting than the Warcraft one.

Well, let's be honest about things. Very few Sci-Fi MMORPGs have been successful up to this point. The few still going are either very old ones that found a marginally lucrative market such as Anarchy Online, or are like EVE Online which offers a unique, if complicated, gaming universe. Neither is based on a prior license.

Established licenses such as Star Wars and Star Trek haven't done well because so many people go into them with preconceived notions of how the universe is 'supposed to work', and end up being disappointed. I know I was in Star Wars Galaxies when it first started and I wanted to be a Han Solo type smuggler and found out there were no player-owned ships at the time, and 'smuggling' was done by taking quests to take 'special cargo' to different planets by shuttle.

I remember thinking, 'Gee, I wanted to be a death-defying rebel, not a drug mule' and stopped playing pretty soon afterward.

If The Old Republic has the same level of immediate immersion in the Star Wars universe that the KoTOR games had and can follow it up with some unique game play, I think it'll be pretty darn successful.

WoW's age is showing, and people stop playing it everyday for various reasons.

People don't just leave stuff behind, they keep talking to their old friends, and tell them how awesome the new MMO is. Then there are ones who were on the fence and turn, sending more people to the new MMO. Later the last group of people join their friends in the new game, leaving a few die-hards behind.

A lot of MMO's will steal WoW's thunder for a little while, then can't keep up the momentum. That's what it will take to bring WoW off it's throne, another MMO to bleed them and keep the ones it steals.

Last time Bioware and Star Wars met it was amazing.

I have high hopes for this game. Since they stated they won't force group quests (FUCK YEAH!).

This is the only MMO to ever excite me. And I wait impatiently for it.

The more the merrier. I think there are lot of market for new mmos. Many people still plays wow but many others got bored and quited, also there even more people that never played a mmo and maybe they will start with this one. Anyways i think is an error to try to relate a SW with WoW. Beside that they have nothing in common (besides swords/light sables and knights...well palidins are kind of knightly...). I guess they were trying to say that they pretendo to make a game as succeful as wow, but trying to take WoW player to SW or making it as WoW for the same end will only harm SW potential.

Shame it's going to fail miserably...If my intuition is anything to go by. And it's usually right.

Well, it won't fail financially. But it won't be a good game.
Are you saying this because you don't like the genre? (By which I mean MMO's)

Or that you don't think this will be a good MMO?

Haha, thats possibly true, actually :p

I think that (yeah, thats right, I have even more rant in my guns XD) a lot of analysts who predict "WoW killers" on the basis of their superior tech, gameplay, etc, are ignoring the social aspect of the whole thing, which is arguably the biggest aspect of an MMO...

The reason why WoW is so popular is because it got ahead of the pack - sure, other MMO's were around before WoW but Blizzard's game was the first to solidify the genre. WoW has time on its side - the player base is loyal to the point of addiction because they've established friends and connections on the game.

And, lets be honest, friends will ALWAYS pwn superior technology.
Right, and what's more fun than being with a group of friends and beating down that high level dragon?

Nothing
Absolutely Nothing.
.

I wonder if the Old!Republic would have a feature like this...

Here's hoping it tanks, just to kill the sentiment in the gaming industry that successful gaming artistry comes from throwing money at something.

The bounty hunter has jet packs I believe.
An mmo is quite a huge game. Rendering all of it in high end graphics would tear your computer to shreds.
Take a look at these 2 videos:
TOR:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKN4pZ0DaUc

GW2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEdr8HHJ-zU

They're both MMO's, and is both scheduled to release at roughly the same time, yet GW2 looks a LOT better than TOR.
The textures in TOR especially seems very low res and bland.

To anyone who brings up graphical issues, that is, that it doesn't look as good as a game should when it has had millions of dollars ploughed into it: WoW was designed specifically with the average Joe in mind, the normal gamer, the casual AND hardcore, so that it could successfully entice as many people into it's control as possible; it did this by designing a game engine that can be played on poor pcs, yet offer more hardcore gamers (what I consider to be) in-game max settings that STILL look very pleasing to the eye.

Star Wars may look a little bit average from the screen shots (again, screen shots are just snapshots in time, not taking into account what the game looks like live) but it will undoubtedly offer gamers a range of settings to fully cater to the average, casual masses, which, if it's going head-to-head with WoW, it will most certainly target.

I for one am looking forward to this, being a Star Wars fan and a WoW fan. It's always good, in my opinion, to have a change in gaming style; though, how different SW:OR turns out mechanics-wise is yet to be seen.

It looks interesting... But the cartoony art style is really throwing me off. I mean, it's Star Wars. It's serious and at least semi-realistic. It looks like they're trying to go for the cartoonish art style of WoW, but the thing is, WoW is set in a silly cartoon world. You're not supposed to take WoW's world seriously. Star Wars, on the other hand... Ugh.

I wonder how it'll turn out. It's still going to take another year. My chances of buying it depend if I'm still playing LOTRO. Also, I have a bad feeling about the RP... I'm guessing it's going to boil down to 4 or 5 different characters copy pasted into everyones bios: Han Solo, Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul.

Still, it does have the story going for it... But LOTRO has that, too, and that didn't manage to pull in a giant crowd.

And stop saying that an MMORPG is a failure if it doesn't "dethrone" WoW. There are dozens of MMORPGs right now that have an active player-base and are bringing in money. That's definitely successful.

They think that it is a fiction that does very well and also spans the decades? Of course it does, it's Star Wars. It has done very well, just ask George Lucas and he can tell you.

I am glad EA is putting a lot of money into the game. Knowing Bioware they will most likely take that money and put it to very good use.

One of my friends was a hardcore WOW player (had three level 80's and played almost non stop for quite awhile) but he was talking to me about how he just got bored with it. He realised all he was doing was getting new equipment via grinding, then Blizzard would release some more and he would start the grind again.

He even said he proberly wouldn't even buy Cataclysm but was thinking about getting TOR (depending on reviews)
