Starbound Beta Should Launch December 4 (ish)

Barring any unforeseen obstacles from Steam, the Starbound beta should go live within the next couple weeks.

pre-orders the game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123677-Starbound-Pre-Orders-Raise-1-Million-Reach-All-3-Stretch-Goals]. While the beta will be handled through Valve's Steam platform, the final full release will also be available as a completely DRM-free download.

Last month, Tiy gave a detailed explanation [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129148-Starbound-Beta-Is-Not-Very-Far-Off] of exactly how the beta will work. Basically, there will be three stages, each more polished and having more features than the one preceding it. If you have beta access, you can opt-in to the beta at any stage you like.

The December 4 date would seem to refer to the beta's first stage: Progenitor. Progenitor will be a very buggy and unfinished build, and is only recommended for those who "can't wait any longer" and "enjoy giving feedback".

Developer Chucklefish has been updating the Starbound website [http://playstarbound.com/] on an almost daily basis, providing developer commentary on what the team was working on that day. It's a great way to see the game literally develop before your eyes, and it's fantastic to see Chucklefish being so transparent with its work.

Starbound is a 2D pixel-art sandbox-construction game, the spiritual successor to Terraria, which was in turn heavily inspired by Minecraft. "Freedom" is the big word in Starbound, where you can go out in your own spaceship and build bases and collect items all over the galaxy.

Hooray, seeing as this is one of the first indie games to be released that I have backed, I think I will join the beta as soon as it starts. I got into Terraria through hearing about this funnily enough, and as much as I enjoy it, I am looking forward to a sci-fi version much more.

A pity I won't be able to convince any of my friends to buy it though, they all got their shiny new Xbox One's last week.

Can't wait. I have tons of fun in sandbox building type games and this looks like it's shaping up to be the best of the best.

I won't be part of the beta as I don't like playing games that are in beta, but once the full release comes out, if you've not found someone to play with, feel free to look me up on Steam. Me and a good friend of mine will both be playing it heavily I'm sure.

Awesome that it's going to be out before the end of the year. I started to worry we wouldn't see this until 2014. I guess that's still the case for the full version, but at least we'll get a taste of it.
