well, i've come back to the escapist forums after god know how long.

I figured the best opening post would be one on RWBY since i did make a bunch of discussion threads on it.

With the release of Volume 7 last year, i can say that the show is reaching a state of mediocre but competent. However, the fact it took this long is unacceptable. The fighting has gotten better in terms of presentation but i still feel they are constraining themselves too much.

Any one else have opinions?

You could say I have some opinions about RWBY. Personally, I'm quite enjoying the run of the show so far. Season 5 was definitely the low point, and Season 6 took a bit of a dive at the end after a strong start. However, I felt that Season 7 was the strongest season post-Beacon arc. I'm not going to say that anyone is wrong for disagreeing, though.

As for constraining themselves on the fight scenes, I definitely feel like they are finally striking a balance between the old fight scenes that were epic, but seriously downplayed the threats of the monsters, and the newer fights that sometimes lacked any real inspiration. Given the fact that Monty Oum is no longer around to direct and animate the epic fights of the first two volumes, I'm quite pleased with how the fights in Season 7 turned out.

Is that praise or criticism? Like did your opinion of it shift up or down?

I've only ever seen one episode of RWBY, the first episode back when it premiered. I thought the dialogue was cringy and when I found out it was going to be an "academy anime" I dropped it immediately and haven't touched it since. My entire impression of it was that it was going to be an "anime" by people who really like anime but actually have absolutely no original ideas and will just create a trope-ridden mess.

How on point is that?

I'd say that the writers of RWBY at least make a solid attempt to tell their own story without going into cliche mode as much as you might think. There are definitely tropes, but no more so than any other work. As for it being an "academy anime", that is, again, only somewhat true. It's anime-inspired, taking place in an academy, but I wouldn't really call the academic part of the story the focus. It's a setting, not a subgenre that RWBY is trying to be part of.

After season 3 they move away from the academy setting and into a more adventure type story. That said it's not great. My opinion was up when V1-2 was around then been steadily going down. Vol 6-7 have been an upswing but not enough to make it a good work.

RWBY is a fascinating work wherein the preponderance of good ideas is matched only by their misapplication or rejection in favour of other, worse ideas.

The “state” of RWBY? An “open dialogue”? Is this where we’re at? Just shooting shit, even more educated shit, about a web cartoon has to have the sort of title that belongs on a submission to the Cabinet?

You...haven't talked to many RWBY fans. This is the actual title of an article posted on the RWBY wiki prior to the launch of Volume 7: "Why Volume 7 is the Last, Best Chance to Save RWBY from the Oblivion of Narrative Mediocrity".

Judging from that, and seeing how the TV Tropes character page for RWBY had to be locked down due to edit warring over one particular character's sexuality, RWBY fans can be quite intense, even by fandom standards.

Not much of a RWBY fan, but I will happily take that show over Naruto/Boruto, most of the crap they have in shounen nowadays, and Legend of Korra. I know there was a quality dip after Monty's unfortunate passing. The team that is left is at least trying. Most anime shows can't even bother to do that.

Shonen's not my personal cup of tea but if anything that demographic's got far more interesting stuff going on than it did when Bleach and Naruto were relevant.

If we're talking Dr. Stone, Demon Slayer, and My Hero Academia, then yes. I've only seen MHA though, and I have an interest in Demon Slayer. But then you have dumb shit like Dragonball Super, Fire Force, and Black Clover (Naruto with wizards and even more annoying protagonist). There is a reason why I am all variety person when it comes to anime, and don't constantly inject myself with shounen or shoujo. Viewing only those genres get tiring real quick.

This kinda reminds me of an old friend of a friend who made the comment once that was along the lines of "Why'd they have to cancel Stargate? It just got good [it was season 10]". I'm like, in my head, "Why are you watching something for 9 seasons that isn't good?"

Yeah, this is an important question and I admit i should have asked this myself. My thing with RWBY was that i wanted it to be good, I saw the interesting ideas in play and how
the fact there are gods and immortals
could affect the scale and scope of the story. However, as i continue to watch it, I find it frustratingly constrained and mediocre in plot.

Regardless, i'm still watching mainly out of both a sadistic sense of joy at seeing it fumble and flail and a legitimate hope that it improves to become good
