Can someone tell me some really good PC games which I can purchase from Steam? I have Mass Effect 2 for my Xbox 360 but I am debating weather or not I should buy it for PC too.
Ok... here goes:
For Steam MP to work, ideally you need a community. Luckily, Escapist has a brilliant Steam community. Get the Orange Box, you get 5 games straight off.
Portal- widely regarded as a bloody good puzzle game, with decent humour to boot (although keep it in mind that "x is a lie" is no longer funny, and is an offense punishable by death in some areas).
Half Life 2, Episode 1 and Episode 2- Again, regarded by most as a pretty decent game, arguably Valve's best known franchise (although that may be CS...).
TF2- Excellent. No other word for it. There is still a hu-massive-ungous (aka really really big. Like, bigger than that guy's mum) community. In fact, here's the Escapist PC Clan group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/chat/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC], we take all levels of skill and play non-competitively, although I organise events such as
And even a minor 3v3 tournament in the works at the moment.
Add onto that L4D/2 (whichever floats your boat), which also has an active community on here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Escapist-Left-4-Dead-Group].
As for mods, I'd suggest picking up Neotokyo (free [http://www.neotokyohq.com/]) first. And if you decide to get Portal in the Orange Box, Portalrelude is another awesome community mod [http://www.portalprelude.com/].
If you get L4D, TF2 or L4D2, feel free to add me and hit me up for a game, my steam is Chimpyacee.
If you're patient, you can have a downright massive games collection on Steam simply by getting any weekend deals that are remotely interesting, and perusing the 10 dollar or 5 dollar section for slightly aged jewels. Sounds like you have RPG tastes, so I would encourage looking at Bioware games. As for ME2...I always prefer PC myself, But if you do like the controller, I see no reason why you would need the PC iteration unless you have money to burn. Dragon Age, though, is intended for PC, so get that through Steam. Beyond that, Steams really too massive to narrow down without more info.
Maybe the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, they`ve got GREAT atmosphere even though most of the story of the side-missions are made of rotten guts. The main reason for buying this game is that it`s dirty cheap for steam about everywhere.
Edit: I forgot to mention Civilization 3, one of the best games I`ve ever played.
There's lots of suggestions here - thanks guys, what do people think about buying Dragon Age and is the Digital Deluxe Version of Mass Effect 2 worth it?
If you are going to get any version of Mass Effect 2 for PC, it may as well be the Digital Deluxe (I find myself using the Collector rifle a bit in the beginning). The extras are good and probably warrant the extra $10.
HOWEVER, seeing as you own ME 2 for Xbox, I would probably forgo ME2 for PC until a price drop. The extra stuff is good, but its worth 10 extra dollars, not 60.
