Gods bless the Internet. By completely eliminating retail overhead from the distribution channel, one need only concentrate on revenue-to-cost-of-development in absolute terms (make $5 off Valve---or whatever the devs get from a $20 sale---times units sold - amount spent making game = profit. No middleman involved.)

Hell, the Minecraft guy didn't even need to go THAT far, he distributed his little game HIMSELF.

This augurs extremely well for the future of gaming because it minimizes the role of guys like Bobby Kotick.

Mind you, where regards Kotick, I propose SimuLord's Corollary to Godwin's Law: "As the number of posts on a thread related to video games rises, the probability of Bobby Kotick's name being mentioned approaches 1."

Capitalism Ho!

I personally love this game, and I'm glad it's making money.

Wait, "Capitalism, ho!"? Wut?
Play the demo. It's free, and it's on Steam, and it's a tiny download. If you still think it looks shitty after that, then, and only then, will I get annoyed.

Capitalism, ho!

Downloaded this a few days ago. It's a lot better than it sounds.

>Impling I would ruin my pc and install steam

Sorry, but im an anti steam kinda guy. If it gets a disc release and its suitably cheap I might just buy it and download a cracked version. But your right, I shouldnt judge it that badly without plaing it first.
That's fair enough, I suppose, although the demo can be downloaded here [http://www.carpefulgur.com/recettear/downloads.htm]) for free, too. It's also purchasable from Impulse or GamersGate... Impulse uses a Steam-like download manager. I don't think GamersGate does.

I'm curious to know why you're opposed to Steam, though. A lot of the initial problems it had are gone, it's not a resource hog (and can be easily disabled), and insofar as "DRM" goes it's the single most liberal download manager I've ever used... it's still a form of DRM though, so you're welcome to object to it in that regard, as well as anything I've missed.

Its something the character says. She's an ultra-moe random-humor girl so she says things like that.

The game is alright, not for me since I don't like tycoon games, but what it does it does well.

I dunno, just dont like having all my games tied to another program. I want to play this game, I dont need or want another service to do so. I really dislike games making me jump through a bunch of hoops just to start it.
That's fair. You can force Steam into offline mode provided it's up-to-date, as well as disable game updates so you don't get patches forced on you, but you still need to run Steam to play any given game downloaded using Steam. It prevents you making copies, but gives you unlimited ability to re-download the game anywhere, on any machine with a copy of Steam. So in theory, you have all the same rights as you would buying a game, provided you use Steam... it's essentially only one hoop to jump through, and has a lot of fringe benefits if you do so (cheap games on special, unlimited lifetime updates, achievements and ingame chat across different games...)

It IS still a hoop to jump through though, and it can be annoying. For example, I registered on it using my old account name, and now can't change it, update it, or transfer my games to a new account. Utter pain that is! Thankfully, even though my account name is locked, I can still change my username (what other people see).

You know the best part about this game? The company that translated it only consists of 3 people.

One of the best games I've played this year.

If you have a high tolerance for "japanese" stuff and anime, you can enjoy this game. It has more standard anime cliche tropes then you can shake a baseball bat at, and it's humor is only occasionally amusing, but the gameplay it's set over is solid 'Sim' mechanics, and the dungeon gameplay is an interesting diversion. The game at least, doesn't take itself too seriously, with dozens of self referencing gags.

Mind, I only played the Demo, so I don't know how repetetive the game might get. Also, it is HARD to make that first gold deadline..I dunno if it gets easier, but I had to sell like a MOFO to get it done and was left with absolutly nothing. Then the Demo ended.
During the full game, if you fail a deadline then it goes into this "It was all a dream!" bit and the story starts over but keep all your items and level. It's an interesting mechanic later on and thank god there's a skip button.
Oh, so your SUPPOSED to fail?
