Still Alive Composer Penning a Ditty for Portal 2

Jonathan Coulton - or at least his song-writing talents - will make a triumphant return in Portal 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Portal-2-Xbox-360/dp/B002I0J9M0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295029420&sr=8-1], but don't expect any cake.

Portal [http://www.amazon.com/Orange-Box-Xbox-360/dp/B000R0PLK2/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1295029919&sr=1-4] was so short and sweet that it's nigh-impossible to pick out one moment as being the "best." If you had to pick one though - perhaps while being held at gunpoint by a particularly irate Valve fan - you'd probably be safe with Still Alive, the charming and funny song that played as the credits rolled.

Now, Jonathon Coulton, the songwriter and self-confessed geek behind the song, has confirmed that he will also be contributing music to Portal 2. Coulton flew to Seattle last night, and as the doors were closing, he joked [http://twitter.com/#!/jonathancoulton/status/25572397851611137] on Twitter that if the plane went down, then the Portal 2 song would go down with him. Thankfully, there was no plane-related disaster, and Coulton landed safely a few hours later, saving not only the song, but Christmas as well, if Coulton's follow-up tweet [http://twitter.com/#!/jonathancoulton/status/25652955000610816] is to be believed.

The song won't have too many references from the first game, however, as writer Erik Wolpaw has made it very clear that he does not intend to resurrect [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101476-Portal-2-Writer-Enough-With-the-Cake-Jokes-Already] three year old jokes. "If you thought you were sick of the memes, I was sick of it way ahead of you," he said. "For instance, cake. I've had enough cake jokes."

Portal 2 comes out for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 21st.

Sounds good, and I'm very happy that they won't be rehashing tired, played-out internet memes. I look forward to hearing Mr. Coulton's musical talents in-game...

Awesome. Maybe now a new meme can be created and everyone can stop saying the cake is lie, it was'nt a lie. There was even some glitch or something in Portal that you could use to get the cake.

Thank you!

The fanbase and their over saturating of portal memes and quotes totally ruined it and made me hate the game. Sure the song was great, but hearing everyone recite it and get all weak in the knees when hearing it really frustrated me. I'm glad the man is doing something about this and I look forward to hearing the new song. [sub] Now all I have to is prepare for the tsunami of praise the game will get...[/sub]

You can bet the new song is going to become a tired, played-out internet meme.

Also, I'm pre-emptively dreading the tidal wave of 'They told me that if I ever [performed certain action] I would DIE!!'

Please no more Portal memes, I can't take another one.
But for that to happen, the game would have to be less awesome....
A fine trade-off. Anything but more stupid ass Portal memes.
Are you sure you want to put the idea of an Ass Portal out into the ether?

Gabe confirmed this quite some time ago, but if nothing else it's good to confirm the continued cakelessness.

Rule 34 has shown me that already.

This is news? I though it had been widely recognized as soon as Portal 2 was announced?
I'm a fan of Jonathan Coulton, and have listend to a lot of his songs. I'm looking forward to another great one, but I fear it will be hard to beat the old one. Let's hope for a joke about episode 3! I have a feeling the reason that co-op is being so hyped is because in the single player campain you will meet Freeman, and they don't want to spoil it.

PS Thanks

Coulton is doing music for Portal 2? Wow! I knew that quite some time ago [http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/03/doing-science-jonathan-coulton-to-create-music-for-portal-2.ars]!

This isn't news, because it isn't new. It's been known for quite some time that Coulton'd be doing Portal 2 music. I think it was also mentioned in EGM or EGMi, but I can't be bothered to find the issue with the Portal 2 preview.

P.S. Thanks

I find this mindset to be rather strange. I've had enough of cake jokes myself, and I haven't even finished Portal, but there are apparently a horde of fans who are *not* sick of them. It might be worth compromising your own integrity as a developer to throw all those fans a bone, especially as a single cake joke would probably be enough to please a great deal of the cake-hungry.
