Suda 51's Sci-Fi Shooter Flies to North America

Two more titles from the Japanese Guild01 compilation are coming to 3DS in 2012.

As hinted several months ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119699-Level-5-May-Begin-Developing-in-the-West], publisher Level-5 is expanding its efforts in North America, beginning with putting Liberation Maiden on the 3DS eShop... oh, right about now. As announced in the latest Nintendo Direct earlier today, Grasshopper Manufacture's downloadable shooter, released earlier this year in Japan as part of the Guild01 game compilation, is now available to download.

Priced at $7.99, Liberation Maiden "delivers the AAA quality in design, story, and gameplay that gamers typically expect of a high-priced boxed product but delivers it through the downloadable platform," according to Level-5 President and CEO Akihiro Hino. It was released in Europe on October 4.

Following an intro from developer Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51, the launch trailer introduces heroine Shoko Ozora, President of Japan. Set a century in the future, Liberation Maiden looks like it's part anime, part mech shooter, and it's described by Suda as "a full-scale 3D shooting game."

Additionally, two more games from Guild01 are coming to North America in the near future. Airport sim Aero Porter and adventure RPG Crimson Shroud will be released for the 3DS later this year.

I do like the decision to split the five Guild01 titles up and sell them separately for the NA release. I might pick this up this week. Only thing is I've heard it's really short.

I like Suda 51, so I will have to get this when I get paid tomorrow.

How have I not heard of these games and Guild01 though? That's a pretty impressive rock that I was living under I guess.

Ah well, at least I can actually dust off my 3DS and use it now.

Hell, I want the original Metal Wolf Chaos. And if there is a new MWC, have the president be Stephen Colbert.

3 Nice ass shot at 2:03

4 Make this game for the Nintendo DS (I don't have a 3DS)

5 Maybe there could be an anime for this

You guys are quick. I was trying to make a Metal Wolf Chaos joke as soon as the video ended.

Anyways, need this game. Very much.

This seems like the good kind of Japanese ridiculousness. I might actually get this one. Have a ZOE-style nostalgia trip.

The music wasn't bad in the video either.

So, I have to say a few things about this game. It's short, but it's defined to be a score attack game... Yet you can't skip the story parts. I haven't done another playthrough on this game yet.

Anyway, the story is quite negligible. Nothing is explored. And it feels like there is WAY more here than what I'm initially seeing. Like, there's supposed to be an anime about this. Oh, and there's a cliffhanger. There's definitely more, but for some reason, it's cut down to the bare bones. It feels like a shame, this really should've been fleshed out.

The way the game plays though is quite nice. It's fast and it's fluid. Really feels good. But there are some problems. Like having to use the stylus to shoot. My hand cramped after just 2 stages. I had to take a break. Maybe that's just me though, since I did play other games prior to liberation maiden.

The 'story segments'(well, mission briefings really) break the flow, and you can't just outright skip all of it. Wish I had that kind of option. If you want to replay this, be prepared to see the same damn thing over and over.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to play with your other hand if you're left handed. Odd they left that out. Not that it bothers me, but that they didn't think of it...

The music. Well, there's j-pop in there. but only at the first boss and last boss. And i think it's good. However, if that isn't your thing, you might turn that off. Other sounds are quite nice to listen to.

The camera isn't too much of an issue, but it probably shows your mech a bit too large in the screen. This isn't a problem for the bosses however, as the camera then zooms out, so you can focus on the giant boss.

Despite all this, I did enjoy my time with it. It's very short and has 'where all the story at?' written all over it, but if that doesn't bother you, I'd say give it a go.

I think what needs to happen is a crossover between this and Metal Wolf Chaos for some good 2-player action. The Presidents of New-Japan and the USA join forces in their armored mech suits to defend the globe. I can dig it as long as it remains ridiculous and over-the-top.

keep your bitching about the country's leaders in the R&P threads where it belongs
O.T. this looks like fun to play more and more reasons to buy a 3ds
