Do you get any sort of royalties or kickbacks from suggesting wiki links? Every single one of your posts is a wiki link.
Not EVERY link is a wiki link. God. Since you are my personal stalker, you should know that.
Ha! I'm slacking off in my stalking then. Maybe I should read this to improve.........

Asterios Polyp. Its AWESOME!

Of course theres also Miller's earliar stuff lke The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year ONE but steer clear of stuff after that. Sin City and 300 are ok but they left nothing on me personally.

With Batman theres also The Man who Laughs which chronicles Batman and Joker's first meeting and Dark Victory which introduced Robin.

Theres also Justice which actually makes Aquaman awesome if you can believe that and Marvel's Marvels which follows a news reporter and how the various superheroes and their respectives ages are seen.

this guy is absolutely right and i thought i was on the minority for cable and deadpool (shame it brought about this wave of deadpool flooding into every book :( )
Thanks, I read a lot of comics.

Yeah Cable and Deadpool was really good becasue Deadpool wasn't overexposed and Cable was there to ground him (says something about a character when a time-traveling warrior messiah is more normal than them). There was genuine character developement that seems to have been lost from both characters recently, Cable got a lot funnier becoming a subtle deadpan snarker and Deadpool managed to become more focused and noble if not saner.

That series would make a fantastic videogame or tv show. It's also the series that got me back into reading comics, as I read Cable a lot during the nineties as a kid with the ocaisonal deadpool. I came back as an adult to find the characters written smarter and comics in general to be better (I grew up in the dark ages of comics so yeah). Then I retro-actively went back and read all of the greats (i.e. everyone Vertigo's produced).

If you can get your hands on the original The New Teen Titans, they're good. Keep in mind when they were written though. Crisis on Infinite Earths, the DC "reset" comic, was good to. Infinite Crisis not so much, and Final Crisis is...ugh. "52" was good because the main three were not the stars and others got a chance to shine.
However, Blackest Night is AWESOME. I'm enjoying what I've read so far.

On a guilty note, Gotham City Sirens is a fun read. Poor Harley... :)

Powers

Imagine if Bruce Tim (Batman The Animated Series) and the guys who made C.S.I. made a comic book about detectives dealing with super hero crimes. That is what 'Powers' is all about. And it gets real damn good.

Also, Fell.

'Fell' is visually captivating, really throws you into the world. Warren Ellis wrote this once but has not been keeping up with it. Worth a look see from what he did finish though.

How...very sad. I've been working on my own idea exactly like that for a while now. Well, guess I'll have to check that out anyway.

Alright, thank you to everyone who has suggested a novel, I'll save a list of everything and see what I can pick out.

well my first real comic/graphic novel i ever bought (i read a fair few while growing up as my dad has an oddly large amount of originals he kept from when he was young luckily) and it really did kickstart me back into comics (it was the second collected volumes, I stick to paperbacks because shipping makes things a real hassle here in the UK so I go and buy when I can). And yeah it needs to be made into another form of media (as does civil war). On an unrelated note who would you say is the best artist currently working in the industry atm.
Hmmm, I more have an eye for writers than artists, but I think Frank Quitely does stellar work. Bryan Hitch is quite good, but really as long as it's not Liefield I'm fine these days.

As for writers it's always a battle between Alan Moore and Grant Morrison (though I'm not sure if Moore counts anymore as he isn't producing a lot of work these days), but I think Brian K. Vaughan has fantastic potential to be considered one of the greats (if not already), his work is fresh and yet doesn't rely as much on vulgarity like either great writers (like Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis).

Batman: the Dark knight returns
And Year One. That's pretty good.

Dark Knight Strikes Again and All Star Batman and the Boy Wonder are very hate it or love it material. I thought DKSA was good but I really couldn't stand the washed out art look (like the only time art has mattered to me). I like ASBAR when viewed as a parody.

Most of these are collected comics, not necessarily GN's but..

Punisher Max - The Garth Ennis run, fantastic series (If you're into more adult comics, some people aren't so just saying.) It all ties together perfectly, with some excellent story telling.

Preacher - Again by Garth Ennis, great stuff.

We3 - an excellent story by Grant Morrison. Like a dark and brutal sci-fi version of the Incredible Journey.

Sandman as has been mentioned, by Neil Gaiman.

Chew - It's ongoing and only just really started but it's excellent.

I Kill Giants - Can't really say much about this, you have to read it without prior knowledge, but a lot of people love it, i thought it was pretty good too, though not my usual sort of thing.

Y The Last Man - Every mammal possessing a Y chromosome has died simultaneously, except for one man Yorick, and his pet Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. It's really great.

Superman: Red Son - Great Elseworlds story (minus the silly ending) about Superman landing on a Ukrainian farm instead of Kansas and being raised in the Soviet Union.

Wolverine: Old Man Logan - Don't want to spoil anything but it's like "The Unforgiven" with Wolverine, what more do you want? haha.

Ronin - A disgraced Ronin is reincarnated in a dystopian future to put a stop to the Demon that killed his master.

V for Vendetta.

Saga of the Swamp Thing - Amazing horror type stories and reinvention of a classic character by Alan Moore.

Black Summer - A gritty Superhero story dealing with the aftermath of a Superhero that kills the President because he's convinced himself it was the right thing to do to save people.

Planetary - More by Warren Ellis, don't want to spoil a thing, it's excellent.

Wanted - Completely different from the movie and in my opinion much better. Funny, slick and badass to the bone

Sin City - Just the thing if your in it for grit. Classic anti heroes and vile villians slugging it out in a city of sin

Enjoy :)

The problem is that most of my favorite stories are involved in continuity, like Blackest Night, Civil War, Dark Reign and so on.

As for good stand-alone stories,
Batman: Hush. It's in the continuity, but for the most part, it stands very well on its own. In fact, Batman has loads of good stand-alone stories that have nothing to do with continuity, such as Long Halloween. I also recomend Kingdom Come. And of course, Watchmen, THE big graphic novel.

good picks, i loved hitch on the ultimates, for me its a 3 way tossup between chris bachalo (very energetic sylised work which is always on time), steve mcniven and his hyper realisede sometimes late work and ofc alex ross although that makes series run very late.

Again good picks on writers im more mark millar (various marvel work),geoff jones (green lantern)and matt fraction (for revitalising iron man and iron fist)
I do like Mark Millar, it a huge shame what got done to Ultimates. I haven't read alot of DC (except elseworlds and famous stuff) but I have been thinking of getting into it, I hear Geoff Jones has practically revitalized GL. The only Fraction I've been exposed to is Uncanny X-men which is alright except for his man-crush on Cyclops.

Transmetropolitan has already been (rightfully) mentioned
No Hero by Warren Ellis as well.

If you want to see what it's like to be a cop in a city overrun with super crime try Gotham Central, it was a pretty good look at what the police in Gotham City have to deal with

The Pride of Baghdad. In reality, during the Iraq War, a group of lions escaped the Baghdad zoo, and wandered the city. Here's an interesting story about that.

Y: The Last Man, good long story. Tree-Fiddy rules!

Maus. Ugly, nasty, and very human.

If you like sci fi in any form then GL since he joined is definitely worth a look. I don't blame you for keeping away from DC, i personally have only read all star superman , green lanter/glc ,and their event books.
It's the continuity snare that turns me of I think. I really enjoy elseworlds, I just really can't be bothered working out all the crisis crossovers. I might because I'm interested in Morrison's work on Batman and Robin and The Return of Bruce Wayne. But yeah I've read a crapload of Batman and Superman elseworlds. Even stuff like "Nine Lives" and "Speeding Bullets".

I might look in Green Lantern now. Also I recommend the cosmic setting of Marvel if you haven't read it, starting with Annihilation it became better (in my oppinion) than the regular setting. They gather all these awesome space characters from over the last 30-40 years and fling them together in awesome over the top but at the same time gritty war.
