Seeing as I use my Xbox almost exclusively for "single television multiplayer" these days I couldn't help but post my opinion here (hopefully not every disagrees with me and my friends. lol).

Now, Guitar Hero: World Tour (or any variety of rock band, etc) is fantastic as long as you can find someone willing to sing, although it's certainly not cheap if you are buying it in Australia.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a fun little game that you could probably get really cheap these days and my friends and I have a blast with it. Game leaves a lot to be desired single player unless you're a huge Marvel fan boy but multiplayer (arcade mode specifically) is a hell of a lot of fun. Very "Gauntlet" style gameplay with a lot of variety of character choices, especially if you like the downloadable content option on your 360.

If you DO play a lot of single player, there is a lot of fun multiplayer in Soul Caliber 4 if you've done your homework. Go out of your way to unlock all the gear for "Special Versus" characters and have all your mates come over and make characters. Ads a lot more fun to the standard "Ryu vs Ken" style fighting games and fills you with a great sense of pride when they start calling {your characters name} cheesy and over powered instead of the character's moveset you based it on.

If you're just after a laugh, you could all start a brand new game of Grand Theft Auto 4 and take it in turns trying to see how long you can survive when trying to get to the third island before you even do the first mission. Added humour value to an already great game. lol

If you don't mind passing the controller around, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. True multiplayer-wise I can only think of DOOM (XBLA, though online is crap) and, may God strike me down, Halo 3.

Call of Juarez has excellent multiplayer, in my opinion. The singleplayer is fun also, so it's definitely worth a buy.

Left 4 dead, definitely. It's engineered purely to be multiplayer (and it's by Valve, so it has to be good).

Anything but Halo 3.
What's wrong with Halo 3? Most people who play it tend to like it. Its fairly balanced, and is fun to play. This is just unnecessary trolling.
Sorry for stating my opinion.
Don't hide behind the "everything is subjective opinion" shield. If you don't like it, fair enough, but posting 'DONT BUY THIS IT SUX FTL' about a game renowned for its' multiplayer on a thread specifically about suggesting multiplayer games is just trolling with intent to start a flamewar. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who reported you.

Anyway, my votes go to L4D (only if you have a mic though), Halo 3, Forza Motorsport 2 and GoW2. There are others I've forgotten, I'm sure, if you look hard enough.

Battlefield Bad Company is really fun if you have somebody to play with and talk to while playing. Good game to play as a team. My friend and I play this game for hours taking over buildings as a team. COD4 is better overall, but not really meant as a team effort as much as a solo effort.

Coop: Resident Evil 5 is fun on split-screen. Not so much over LIVE. Talking and arguing on a mic is not the same as being i n person.

Matchmaking: Shadowrun is great if you don't mind the small community. Very underrated title.

The only multiplayer game I can say I thoroughly enjoyed playing the actual game and not just screwing around (*cough* halo 3) is Battlefield: Bad Company and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (which comes out this week).

I never get tired of saying this one, Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
I agree, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a great multiplayer game.
Also co-op mode in Saints Row 2 is great.
Left 4 Dead is also a good game for multiplayer. (Both of them.)
