Super Mario All-Stars Anniversary Collection Escapes Japan

Gamers outside of Japan rejoice: Nintendo has decided to grace other regions of the world with its new Super Mario Bros. collection.

Less than a month ago, Nintendo Super Mario All-Stars [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103418-Nintendo-Celebrates-25th-Anniversary-of-Super-Mario-Bros] on the Wii with bonus content. Though it wasn't assured that this collection would also make it to other regions, Nintendo has just announced that the rest of the world will be able to join in on the classic Mario fun too.

That is, at least Europe will be able to join in on the fun for now. The Super Mario All-Stars: 25th Anniversary Edition for the Wii has been confirmed in Europe for release on December 3, with pricing not yet mentioned.

Super Mario All-Stars was originally released on the Super Nintendo in 1993. It included Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3, all upgraded with 16-bit graphics. The Wii collection doesn't upgrade the graphics again, but it's at least an accurate port of the original SNES title. It also features a booklet detailing the history of Mario and an awesome soundtrack CD containing Mario tunes from the past 25 years. And it comes in a spiffy red box [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/images/view/68590].

Though only confirmed for Europe at the moment, I'd be astonished if it wasn't only a matter of time before Nintendo confirms a North American release as well. Super Mario Bros. was released in Europe more than a year after it hit shelves in North America, so there's no major reason for Europe to be able to celebrate significantly earlier than everywhere else. We'll keep an eye out for an announcement later today or this week.

This just confirms Yahtzee's words about Nintendo re-releasing the same game over and over and over again. Still, I never owned All Stars in the 90's so...

Yay! All-stars and CD! I'm so getting that game for my little siblings this Christmas (and keeping the soundtrack CD for myself).

It is specifically an anniversary re-release. Complaining that it's a re-release is like complaining that NSMBW was made in a retro style, or that Mario Galaxy 2 had mechanics from previous installments in the series.

Anyway, glad to hear it. There's no way it won't come to the US, and I haven't purchased any of these on the VC yet. Sweet!

Oh how nice, a re-release of Super Mario All-Stars with some anniversary stuff slapped on. Normally I'd find this exciting as a Nintendo fan but personally it just makes me wonder if they're going do something for the Mother games in 2014.....

I'm actually kinda surprised they didn't upgrade the graphics again, but oh well still looks good to me. I'll probably still get it if they do release it in N. America.

I wonder if they are going to release the special Super Mario Bros. Red Wii [http://www.siliconera.com/2010/10/07/red-wii-includes-special-version-of-super-mario-bros/] as well. That would be preety sweet, especially since the Wii lacks bundles that are appealing to core gamers.

That said, red doesn't fit the Wii very well. =/

Considering that the SNES already had a version of All-Stars that included SMW (I believe it was a pack-in late in the system's life), if indeed they're porting the original All-Stars and not the +World version, I think it's a lazy move on their part. And probably cash-grabby too. I would find it hard to believe that porting one would be any harder than porting the other (especially since it's probably nothing more than a VC emulator on a disk).

Least they could do would be to include a coupon for a free download of World.

Personally, I've already GOT all the old Mario games, but only for the GBA. So I might pick this up, if only so I can play them multiplayer on the big screen. Plus, I've never played Lost Levels, and this seems like as good a reason as any other to play it. Plus, the soundtrack CD sounds nice. I could always use some new tunes for my Ipod.

Personally I think a straight port of Super Mario All Stars Super Mario world with have been better, whether or not I get this all depends on how good the shape of my SNES cartridge is and whether or not I can be bothered to connect the SNES whenever I want to play it.

I'm definitely getting it, but I can't help but be a little disappointed. Why couldn't they include a few more games? Mario 64 and Sunshine would be fricken fantastic, but not even Super Mario World? They're lucky my SNES version stopped holding save files.....That soundtrack better be amazing.
