Super Smash Bros. Teases Mario and Peach's Engagement

Super Smash Bros.' website recently added a screenshot suggesting that Nintendo's premiere couple want to make things official.

Super Smash Bros. was always based on a silly premise, specifically that Nintendo's franchises share a single universe where characters fight each other in arena-based melee combat. It was an amusing thought experiment that generated Brawl's lengthy story campaign, but at the end of the day, everyone went back to their respective universes and the status quo returned to normal. Perhaps Nintendo is reconsidering that approach with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, as teased with an image on the game's official website. Assuming that this isn't just director Masahiro Sakurai playing around with Smash Bros.' screen grabs (and you're no fun if you think that), then what we're clearly seeing is Mario and Peach legitimizing a 28-year relationship filled with secret romance and Koopa kidnappings.

Okay, I'm sure there's some other reason for the ring to be there. Nintendo doesn't usually stray far from its canonical formulas, at least not with the bread-and-butter Mario franchise. The ring could easily be an in-game power-up, if not a practical joke, thrown on the main page without a second thought. Sakurai also teased "Who is the ring for?" on Miiverse, suggesting that one way or another, all is not as it seems.

That being said, the more I think about this, the more I hope it's a legitimate screenshot from Smash Bros.' story campaign. Picture it: After years of delaying the inevitable, Mario and Princess Peach finally announce their engagement and send wedding invitations across Nintendo's shared universe. When Bowser, Ganon, and Nintendo's major villains aren't invited, they launch an all-out invasion on the big day to destroy their assembled adversaries in one swoop. Meanwhile Luigi, Mario's long-suffering brother and best man, takes the opportunity to confess his own feelings for Peach, prompting a sibling brawl almost 30 years in the making.

Or, you know, it's just a randomly selected daily screenshot. Why make it something more than that?

The big twist is that Daisy and Peach run off together, tired of how dull their lives have become, and Bowser and Mario realize they have so much history and so much in common that they become best buds and go into business together terrorizing Luigi from now on, and it's the canonical ending to the Super Mario games.

To be honest, Do Luigi and Daisy REALLY have that much chemistry? I don't thing I've seen them together in anything outside of party games.
Also, Luigi does tend to save Peach, if you choose to play as him in the games.

In Mario Power Tennis, Daisy says to Luigi, "Hey, sweetie! I'll take that", while receiving her trophy from Luigi. In the Mario Baseball series, Luigi and Daisy share good chemistry. In Mario Kart Wii, there is a giant, golden statue on Daisy Circuit that shows the two holding hands and dancing together, along with another of Baby Luigi and Baby Daisy. In Super Smash Bros. Maybe Bowser has realised that he is terrible at kidnapping and has resorted to selling bootleg jewelry, Mario unwittingly buys some only to be humiliated by Peach who thinks he is a cheapskate and is insulting her fine tastes? The game is all about people seeking refunds in a 'smash-you-in-the-face' kind of way.

I doubt random as (if the previous dojo is evidence of) it's a particular choice for it's creative camera work. So not random, but doubtful it means anything.

Besides, if you look at the Peach model on the Dojo, you'll see she has the ring on as part of it.

I actually like that idea a lot.

I hope if there is ever a final game in the Mario series, that Mario and Peach tie the knot at the end. Bowser may be evil, but he won't mess with holy matrimony, at least I would hold him to higher standards anyway. >.>

The ring is on her middle finger and it looks like she's taking it off. She's probably giving it to Mario as a blessing. While I would like to see some sort of change in the Mario canon, I have a hard time believing this is anything more than a tease without a payoff.

EDIT: Also, it looks like Mario is in a fighting stance so she's probably just doing one of her attacks.
