That's weird...

Normally Nintendo only copies the more obscure stuff.

I wouldn't have been surprised if Nintendo would have been the first to do this, but we already had Disney ripping off Activision and Activision being the one who ripped off the more obscure (but still popular and profitable) source known as UB Funkeys.

Well, I've only seen a few people jump to the conclusion that this will mean locking the characters unless you have the figurine here, so that is definitely less than the amount on Miiverse jumping to that conclusion. Nintendo have previously said when announcing the NFP figures that they wern't going to make a game reliant on the figurines. As this is only available for the Wii U version, and not the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros 4, I highly doubt that they'll have altered the character unlocking method between each version.

What I think is most likely is that the figures will take advantages of a Wii U version's specific feature of Super Smash Bros 4, such as the ability to customise your own characters (which has not been shown on the 3DS version to date). You customise your character, save it onto that respective figure, and can then take your customised character to other people's Wii U's. That sounds like an awesome additional feature for a bonus non-core part of the game. It hasn't been confirmed, but that is what I expect will happen.

I came here for some good old cooperate back lashing, yet the overall feel of the thread is; "well if they don't lock characters behind it that's fan-dabby-dabulous."

Where's the knee jerking?!

I suppose Nintendo hasn't had a (passable) online infrastructure for ages so they haven't 'matured' into the bleeding them dry strategy.

Ever since they introduced a story to the game, Smash Bros. has been about toys/figurines battling each other (and collecting them, lest we forget the Trophy Room). They just took the next logical step into immersion, stopping just short of making a Nintendo-brand 3D printer that gave you a real-life trophy every time you collected one in-game... which they should totally do, should the technology become inexpensive and safe enough for mass-production.

The real question is: how does this affect the game and how reliably can I ignore it? If that gets answered, I might actually pay attention to E3 this year.

...no I won't. I'll wait for someone I like to relay the news back to me.

Not that I have a WiiU, but I'd still be happy to play this if those toys would have zero impact on the actual gameplay.

If they do, well, then I'll just be going back to Melee.

I don't quite get it. So we'll get toy's with the game (ones we can choose?) and they somehow connect with the game to an account, and we can train up and upgrade that account? What will we be training?

The only real problem I have with this is why Smash Brothers? Why not create a new IP that would benefit from it more?

That is the only criticism I can really think of because if it done right, its not a bad idea, for the brief drunken time I played it, Skylanders is pretty damn fun

so I guess DLC will now be represented in a physical form... that's pretty cool if you ask me. Skylander and Disney Infinity figurines, even though I don't buy them I gotta admit they do look pretty cool. So me buying these things will depend on how well they're made. Fingers crossed on finally getting a cool Link figurine

BRING IT!! The chance to own a complete, matching set of all the best Nintendo characters? Yes please!

Why are people worried about this? It's not like they're going to gate off characters so you can't play as them unless you buy the toy. My guess is it'll be to do with the character customisation- personalise Link's move set on your Smash, save that move set to your Link figurine, take your Link figurine to your friend's house, and BAM, there's all your records and custom moves.

Why is everyone raging about this?

I had to go back to read the article, but what I get from this, is that if you have one of the toys close to the WiiU, then you can add like an extra skin in game or similar, it said nowhere that not having a toy = not getting the character.

No idea about this Disney infinty or Skylander thing it's being linked to...

Also, since when has making toys been a bad thing?
Just because they are a bit late with SmashBros, Pokémon toys have been around for ages, superhero toys even longer. No one rages about that?

What am I missing here?!?!

There's what you're missing I think. In Infinity and Skylanders buying a figure = buying a character. Without real details in the article itself on what the figures do besides a comment that they'll be similar to Skylanders and Infinity, the natural jump is to guess that buying the figures will give you, if not direct access to the character, at least a sizeable advantage.

Of course, this may not be the case at all, but without exact details and having only the previous examples and the wording from the polygon article that it will allow 'training and upgrading in-game versions of characters' it's not hard to see why people might be worried.

I think it would be for like additional character. So it's bassically DLC without the DL . Which is a step backwards if i ever saw one.

That was my thought too, that my no-knowledge about the thing they were refering to was why people are getting worried.

Thanks for the confirmation :p

I hope they do a cheaper dlc option if it's for extra content for those not interested in figures. If it locks content off that should be in the game, like characters, I won't be impressed.

yeah this seems like a great way to add the cost of 7 or 8 $15 figurines to a $60 video game.... not super thrilled but I only own a 3ds so i'm only playing it on there.
Regardless of how they specifically decide to use it in Smash Bros, supposedly the difference between this and Skylanders is that Nintendo's figures will apply to LOADS of different games.
If you have the Kirby figure for one game, you have the Kirby figure for every game in which you might ever find a Kirby figure applicable.

Say MegaMan becomes an unlockable character across numerous Nintendo games if you have these figures, you'd essentially have the "MegaMan DLC" for every game by owning the MegaMan figure.

So it's not exactly just $15 for a single game. More like a....system wide roster update for loads of different games.
That seems to be the idea, anyways.
