Superman Rescues Family From Homelessness

A family facing foreclosure won't have to leave their home after all, thanks to a rare comic book find.

In real life, Superman isn't actually around to save people from a burning building or from a rampaging robot powered by Kryptonite. He is, however, able to save a family from poor economic conditions. When a bank was ready to foreclose on a southern U.S. family due to financial issues, a rare basement find of Action Comics #1 changed everything around.

When the family, that wished to remain anonymous, was packing up belongings from the house that had been inhabited by the wife's family since the 1950s, they found the book that features the first appearance of Superman. They were facing hard times after taking out a second mortgage to start a new business, which was unsuccessful in the current economy.

The household contacted Stephen Fishler of ComicConnect.com [http://www.comicconnect.com/], an online comic marketplace, after discovering that Fishler had brokered sales of two copies of Action Comics #1 earlier this year for $1 million in February and $1.5 million in March. On the comic book condition grading scale of 1 to 10, the family's copy of Action Comics received a Very Good/Fine rating of 5.0. Fishler expects it to sell for upwards of $250,000.

To protect the family's home, Fishler had to get on the phone with the bank to explain just how much money the comic could bring in. With only 100 copies of Action Comics #1 believed to exist, 7 have turned up in the past year-and-a-half. It's nice to see that superheroes really can turn up in the nick of time like this to save people from hardship.

What.A.Find

Seriously, good for them, they needed it.

Reminds me of my Dad telling me about all of the ridiculously rare baseball cards he used to have in his attic, until his mother threw them out.

Who the hell would pay $250,000 for a comic book? Anyways, good for the family. At least they actually have hope of keeping their house now.

Thats a nice heart warming story.
But who would spend that much on a comic, it doesn't seem worth it to me but then again I do not read comics.

Ha! And those crazy church people said superheroes are a bad thing. I mean, when's the last time you heard about a rare bible saving a family from foreclosure?

Good for them, glad there is still some luck in the world, in fact I think they are doubly lucky that a) they found it and b) they didn't know about it before, so they didn't get attached to it.

I've gone through some tough times myself and I tell you having my grandfathers coin collection sitting on the shelf was a times very tempting, but I just couldn't do it, he left it to me, his own father started it when he was a boy in 189-something (it's written down somewhere), and worth a pretty, pardon the pun, penny indeed, but as bad as things got I just couldn't part with it.

Now if I could only find something of value that a relative I dislike left to me...

Who would pay $10m for a painting? Rarity and notoriety drives value, with less then 100 copies confirmed to exist and being extremely famous I can easy see some dude who made a killing in tech stocks or something before the crash dropping some cash on it, either as an investment (it will only go up in price) or because of some fantasy he had reading comics books back when he was a kid.

Hell if I was uber-rich I'd buy an awesome comic collection

That's for a battered one. For an original copy of Action Comics in it's "new" state? That's worth 10 times that easily.
In fact,
on March 29th, 2010, ComicConnect.com sold another copy and fetched USD$1.5 million, making it the most expensive and most valuable comic book of all-time. The copy sold is currently the highest-graded copy from the Comic Guaranty LLC (CGC), which stands at 8.5 VF+ grade.

I did remember a story in which a woman was shot in her chest but a bible stopped the bullet.

Collectors. And if it is a decent condition Superman one then you can fetch millions from the right people. Everythings valueable to someone.

OT: good for the family i guess. Superman saves someone again.

I also heard about a soldier who was shot with by an arrow, but Bible stopped it.

Too bad the other 17 arrows were more accurate.

But did it save her home? That is the real question here.*

*I'm obviously not being serious, so don't take it the wrong way.
