is it just me or am i the only person who cant stand swimming underwater in games. its just one of these things that i hate and i dont know why. i dont think its neccesary either, it was always stupid things like trying to get a key or an item that you needed to progress, why not just put the item across the level not under the fucking water. my 2 least favourite games for this are MGS2 and tomb raider

Yeah. The only series to ever do it right was Metroid.

Why? Because once you got the right suit, it was exactly like moving on land.

Personally, I think it can be a lot of fun when it's done right like in donkey kong 64.
It's just that it seems that a lot of developers have trouble making it work.

I don't mind it in 2D games but horrid camera angles usually spoil 3D underwater swimming. Also, I hate having a breath limit.

I like it, there was a shit scary sequence in HL1 that required you to go underwater with lots of sharks, I thought that was well done. I like water in other games though, like WoW and all the little underwater establishments they have, it's cool to explore.

I hate ladders though, especially in Valve games. They just fucking suck at making ladders...

I prefer swimming under water to swimming head above water in games. You can actually see stuff while submerged.

Hey. Let's take a guess how many people ignore the point of this thread completely just to tell you 'you're never the only one'?

I'm gonna bet a lot.

OT: I used to hate them as a kid. Because I despised time limits.

But I've kinda grown into them. As long as they're not over the top hard.

I used to hate those sections in the old TOmb raider games though. They got on my udders.
Only one so far, I'm surprised.

Anyway, yeah, there's nothing wrong with the concept (unlike timed missions, cough) but the execution is always awful.

It worked quite well in Darksiders... Though he is War so he doesn't need to breathe and the camera wasn't sentient.

But yes, it is quite annoying at times, especially when there's an air meter or time limit and the camera is fighting you.

The underwater in Monster Hunter Tri is pretty awesome once you get the hang of it. I kind of like the extra dimension in the combat.

I like underwater, just so long as they don't cause retarded camera angles/vision problems.

Ehhh it depends on the Game.

Metroid, Zelda, Mario 64, Star Fox 64.
They all pulled it off pretty well.

Some games work it in quite well. It's always nice that they let you swim up behind the enemies and surprise them.

Why do you think so many people hate the water temple in Zelda? Because both in 2d and 3d swimming will have it's faults. And most people can't stand it because it often feels stiff and unnatural.
And yes it can be okay if it's done right so don't spam me with mails about what games have good swimming.

Some games it's utterly awful, some games it's really utterly awesome. You can do a lot with the sense of exploring with underwater structures, but the breath timers are generally annoying. Oxygen tanks and water breathing spells can take care of it for most games though, if the developer can implement them right.

I thought you meant in real life at first.

[sub][sub][sub]I HATE swimming.[/sub][/sub][/sub]

But in games I've played, they haven't been THAT horrible to me.

Assassins Creed 2.

It used underwater swimming to evade Guards. A very useful feature in that game I found.
