I wear mine into my house, then sit down on the sofa and take them off, I don't do it as soon as I step into my house (unless my boots and/or trousers are soaking)
I much prefer my slippers in the home
When I'm visiting a friends house I'm never expected to take my shoes off and don't, unless they pre-tell me to, it's never even crossed my mind about when it's ok to take shoes off.

Ummm... *looks about* Currently sitting in front of a computer, clothing consists of workout skirt and t-shirt. I must not speak for all Americans or something, but I've never liked people tracking their dirt in my house either...
Anytime I'm at a friends home the shoes are off by minute two. Girlfriend, best friend or any of my friends, not to mention my own home.

Well, I only it for going upstairs in both my home and my studen home because the ground floors in both aren't carpeted so it's easier to clean. It saves time spent cleaning carpets all the time.
Also I think it's more of a cultural thing there than anywhere else which is why they do it.

I take the shoes off it's it's be raining or I've walked through mud... otherwise, I don't see much point. There's plenty of fluff and cigrette ash that ends up on the floor that I have to sweep up fairly often anyway.
I did take my shoes off very fastidiously when I lived in Russia, though, which is just a cultural thing.

My household generally doesn't care. I prefer my shoes on, but if I'm asked to take them off I'll happily comply. I just feel more secure with shoes on for some reason.
It's...not that odd for me, I take my shoes off and I live in America. Feels so much more comfortable.

The difference (here in Aus at least) is that you can do either. There's no rule, we're laid back like that.
I'm American, and I've always wondered that about our media's portrayal of Asian customs, too. It seems like a reasonable thing to do.
i keep my shoes on in the house but if their muddy i will take them off but if their wet ill just attempt to dry them on the mat in the doorway.

shoes off and slippers on here. almost everyone i know takes their shoes off in the house. some but not all ask their guests to take off their shoes. but i believe its polite to at least offer to take them off.
I'm American and I always make a habit of taking off my shoes when I enter mine or someone else's home. Why would I want to track dirt all around the house?
