Team Fortress 2 : Overrated?

I've made a search, and it didn't turn anything up.

Team Fortress 2. A god amongst games for many here, but I don't understand its attraction.
It seems like just another average multiplayer shooter to me.

1) Gameplay: The gameplay to me was very repetitive and wasn't anything to talk about.
Each time you play a map, the same things happen, the rush to a certain point, a turret built in a certain point etc.

2) Everybody goes on about how everybody who plays Team Fortress 2 is great and nobody ever calls each other noobs, and there isn't any teabagging anywhere. I've played the game, and the conduct was the same as in any other multiplayer game.

It's not a bad game by any means, but there wasn't anyhting special about it in my view. To me it's an average game in a sea of average games

(I loved everything else on the Orange Box by the way)

I can't say I've ever heard extreme praise for it, although I'll take your word for it. I share your opinion, though. Entertaining for a while, then got old. To each their own, I suppose.

I haven't found it repetitive, I still love it, if a bit frustrating when you are a scout and the other team has twelve soldiers

The 360 and PS3 communities are a little more rude than the PC crowd, so if you're playing on consoles, that might solve #2. TF2 is special because of the emphasis on working together in order to win -- in, say, Call of Duty 4's team modes, players can just run about and get kills - not so in TF2. Valve is always ahead of the pack in terms of getting players to work as a team. Not only that, but the classes are balanced incredibly well, and with user generated content, TF2 can hardly be called repetitive.

One Word: Balance.

That's pretty much why everybody I know liked it, that and the art style.

Its different in the sense that you actually have to work together to get something done.
Often times though it does turn into deathmatch when people are more focused on points that anything else.

I've never found this game to be on anyone's top games ever lists. TF2 doesn't really seem overrated to me because no one is out there sucking its dick every possible chance they can on this forum. I've never played it but I haven't heard a lot of hype or fanboyism on its part. Just a lot of jokes about its characters.

Repetitive? It's a First Person Shooter and among first person shooters it has a wide range of maps, mods, classes and play styles and honestly I don't think i have ever seen anyone tea bag anyone else. In fact, I'm not sure why. I should go around heavy tea bagging people.

Meh, I wasn't so hot on the art style, but maybe it's just me

Every online shooter ever made is repetitive because it will always have one main objective - "Point gun at enemy and pull the trigger"

Eh... I have to call you out on that one. Every time I played I have to say there was practically no coordination and "teamwork" consisted of not shooting guys with the same colored shirts as you.

I had better co-op in HL2:DM. That being said, a friend told me that it was better on days which weren't the free weekends. But regardless, if the game doesn't necessitate team play on a high level to even have a chance of winning, it's not attractive to me.

Personally I had more fun playing Savage.

I'd like to see you do a review of TF2 Lain. I also agree that it's overrated in some respects, like the amount of maps and game modes. However the reason it's loved is because of the perfect balance between classes.

I'm not that big into TF2, so much of my opinion is based off what I've heard from other people.

Not to be a dick, but I doubt you've played it with an actual team, in that case. It's buckets o' fun when two teams that have a "game plan" play each other. In the early stages, people just run around without a clue what to do, because, obviously, they are inexperienced.

I don't really see the appeal, I tried it a few times and meh.. I really had a lot more fun playing the older styled Team Fortress. THAT was some cool shit.. making forts out of the wall pieces and what not.
That sounds more like SourceForts than the Team Fortress I remember.

TF1 and TF2 can't really be compared. There are parallels, but the game feels entirely different. I'd definitely agree that the first was better, if that's what you're suggesting.

Er, yeah, the free weekends are horrible. The game does require a lot of teamwork, more than other games.

It also has a lot of mods and stuff made by people, it's probably one of the least repetitive FPS's I've ever played. Unless you have it on console.
