Tecmo Employees Sue Studio

An independent union has filed suit against Tecmo for hundreds of hours in overtime pay and hiding an accounting scandal.

Yesterday, two ex-Tecmo staffers, including Dead or Alive programmer Hiroaki Ozawa, filed lawsuits with the Tokyo District Court for unpaid salaries and bonuses tallying up to 8.3 million yen ($77,000).

The suit explains that Tecmo moved employees to a "flexible hours" work schedule where overtime did not need to be compensated and could demand an extra 100 hours per month. Additional claims blame Tecmo for forged fake accounting files. If true, legal troubles involving ethical business practices will become a bigger problem than the company's current morale malaise.

Ozawa has been leading the "Tecmo Labor Union" since February. This self-sustaining union represents 300 workers as they sue for earnings.

These tumultuous times at Tecmo began two weeks ago when Team Ninja's rock star in residence, Tomonobu Itagaki, left [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/84246] Tecmo, leveling similar claims of abuse at the Dead or Alive developer. The filing of these lawsuits, which Tecmo is commanded by law to announce to shareholders today, seem to confirm rumors of a mass departure [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/84491] from the studio. Employee discontent may be spreading outside of the Team Ninja studio as well.

Assuming I'm reading this correctly, the "union", representing 300 employees, is suing for a total of $77,000 dollars total? So that means after legal fees the employees will collect about 3 cents apiece along with their pink slips? $77k seems like chump change, but I don't know about Tecmo's liquidity situation.

$256 per head by my maths.
If they lose Tecmo will probably have to cover both sides legal fees as well, which could be fatal to the company. Especially if the staff are leaving en masse.

What do they do besides the DoA series?

Has everyone already forgotten the Fatal Frame series? Although Tecmo didn't rejuvinate survival horror like Res Evil might claim to have done, its still a very well done series, one of the best horror franchises of the last gen easily.

Brilliant, a whole pile of franchises I never bothered playing.

Although Fatal Frame was actually pretty good. Shame it was released with all the fan-fare of Osama bin Laden arriving at an NRA meeting.
