Woohoo! Proof that not all of us here in Texas are cowboys and gun nuts!

In all seriousness though, this is a great story. To have such sincerity at a young age is awesome.

Good on you, Hector Montoya.

That was a remarkably selfless and outward-looking act for a child that young. Good for him. He gives me hope for the future.

The replacement and installation of smoke detectors should be something that is done by the government (whether local or federal), not something left up to an 8 year old to do.

We are talking as little as $2 per unit in bulk, that should be in the budget for local fire station's government funding to cover.

Give the kid a PS4.
Actually, it's not. It's something that should be done by the INDIVIDUAL PROPERTY OWNER! Why should the "government" be footing the bill for individual fire safety within your own residence? Oh, and by the way, it's not really the "government" that's even footing the bill, but taxpayers would be doing so. So, instead of my personal responsibility of purchasing -and testing each quarter of the year- smoke alarms for nearly every room in my house, I now have to do so for the other people around my area because they cannot take personal responsibility for themselves?

Healthcare is one thing that honestly I have no qualms about when socializing, but no way in hell should we start doing every little thing. The more we allow the government to control and monitor, the more backers there are for those nutters that essentially want a Nanny State towards video games, movies, books, and any form of entertainment "for the sake of the children".

P.S. This is a tragic story of death with a happy ending of a child CHOOSING to assist where he really didn't need to. Good on him. However, let's not neglect the fact that either the mother didn't test her smoke detectors or didn't have one to begin with (and if it's a rental, most states require the owner of said rental to make sure they're there and working and if that's the case for Texas and it didn't happen, the owner can be held responsible for negligence).

Okay, I'm going to put my flame shields up for this but...

I really don't think this should be news worthy.

I used to save up for stuff all the time. I paid my first PS2 and XBox in cash out of my own pocket.I bought Game Boys and Games and everything. I saved every penny.

When I saw something that needed it more, however, the games came second. It was the upbringing. People are more important than games. Even today, it's second nature and I really think it should be for more people.

Why has it come to the point where someone putting money ahead of your new gaming console should be worthy of the news?

I might just be cynical of where we are, and I can applaud the good judgement of an 8 year old boy who knows right and wrong at his age and in today's age. I just don't see how this became huge news

This is a very good thing. I just wish it's more common instead of almost unheard of to such an extent that it's news. Kids can be very generous though. I used to give my arcade money to homeless people when I saw them. It made sense to me. They needed it for food. I would just spend it on a few minutes of Street Fighter II.
That brings back pleasant memories. How munificent and magnanimous we are in the distant, simple days before we discover the "value" of money! :)
I haven't changed one bit in that regard. I consider myself an ethical capitalist. Because humans are naturally competitive, I recognize that the only way for us to reach a point where everyone will have enough is through technology. And that will happen through innovation as a result of competition. Basically, communism is the end point of capitalism. Well, that or total annihilation of human race.

i wish i was still that optimistic regarding communism, i guess living in an actual "socialist" country and watching that mistaken ideology destroy everything that took decades to build in the name of populism, changes your prespective quite a bit

regarding the topic, amazing that kid, and good for you as well adam

Buy him an archive of games while we're at it.

That's a very nice thing to do. Good to see a story about decency for a change.

Also, this kid sure as hell rolled double sixes in life to get named "Hector Montoya"!

government actually taking care of the civilians? what kind of communism is that! Definitely not welcome in 'murica!

of course im joking here unless it isnt clear. but seriuosly, the fire safety programs ar awfull all across. i live in a city of 800.000 inhabitants and the citys fire department has a total of 2 trucks with ladders capable of reaching 9th floor, none for above that. one of those two are outdated already, but then again some of the water trucks are over 50 bloody years old.

or they could do it like they did it here. every new building must have them according to the law. the owners foot the bill and dont have a choice.

Today is a strange day indeed. News from Texas that not only DIDN'T make me facepalm, but did exactly the opposite.
