As much as I find this amusing, I also somewhat see this as contradicting the class a little bit. This turns our Demoman into less of a defensive/I'ma kill your shit Engineer class and into a full-blown melee fighter, which doesn't really have any connections to explosives at all, now does it? If they wanted to make a melee class, why don't they just make an all new class based around melee instead of converting a pre-existing one?
A friend had a good point - the Demo was already such a good all-rounder class that one of the only things they could conceivably give him to keep it balanced was a weapon that changed the entire concept of the class.

24/7 sword-and-shield-only servers are going to be fun.

This will make me play Demoman.
Can't wait to see what Valve Cooks up for the Soldier.
Maybe a mace and a shield? Or throwing axes? Or maybe halberds (I thinks that's what they're called)?

What I don't get is the balance issues. Some of the new weapons are rediculously better than the originals. Such as the ubersaw, axetinguisher, bow, and cloak and dagger.

I was reading Valve's site and I noticed this link hidden in their comic. With the sword being offered it appears that this Valve ad might show more potential weapons.

Yep saw that as well, and me and my clan correcty guessed that the Demoman would get a Claymore, we didn't guess the shield tho... I personally think its broken the class a bit to be rid of the sticky launcher as that was effectivly the class mechanic. While they've sort of changed mechanics of some classes (such as the spy with his different watches) all others have kept in the same area of fighting.

The demo is now a new class with this, one that I'm not sure how well he'll do with pyros and sandmans about.

As for the soldier I'm guessing he's getting a pickaxe to replace the shovel, what it will do, I don't know. But if I'm reading Valves hints correctly thats what it will be. I dunno about the bugle tho, unless thats just a medle slot for the soldier (cosmetic).

I still hope the shield is not real thing. I want some more explosives, dammit! The sword sounds awesome, though.

And image does not work.
You probably will get more explosives, you know, for the third thing.

I'm not for one second complaining as Valve is awesome and free is free, but I just don't feel like these are practical at all, which sucks for those people who play Demo competitively and were hoping for something cool to use.

Sure, in a melee-only server Demoman will be an absolute blast, but how often do you get the chance to run right into a heavy or soldier with a melee weapon?

I'm very excited to try the new weapons out and I think it's funny, original, and interesting, but it doesn't seem practical and I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy it after a week.

I will say, however, that I enjoyed this line perhaps a bit too much:

The Chargin’ Targe solves a centuries-old Scottish riddle, which is that shields exist. True, the shield might block the occasional sword blow. However, they are essentially weapons to be used for hiding behind, and this is a concept the average Scotsman does not understand. “If I were to pick up this cowering-plate, I would have to put down my second sword,” a Scotsman thinks. “And surely that is madness.”

The thing I find interesting is that these updates don't actually screw the Engineer as much as people thought the new weapons would. Less splash on the new Rocket Launcher means it'll be harder to corner-snipe turrets, and the sticky launcher was the Demoman's best anti-turret, being replaced with a shield that does nothing for the bullets.

You guys really got to learn when the TF2 developers are f...in with you . ofcourse there is not going to be a sword and a shield, duuuuh. Did we ever get the guarddog? Or any of the other crap they keep babbling about on their blog?

Most likely is the sword / shield a tradeoff for the bottle as the bonus weapon if demo wins
...the guard dog update wasn't even theirs nor was it on their site. It occurs to me you probably didn't even bother to research such information and assumed you could easily troll this topic. Even if you were trying to merely be ironic and funny, the humor is nonexistent. I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.
Leave the poor kid alone. He's just sore 'coz he's still waiting for his Engie blimp update.

I love the idea that everyone's complaining about the new weapons. Don't like 'em? Don't use 'em. It's interesting that they didn't want to build on his class, but I think it's even more interesting that they wanted to build on the character instead. I would have liked a new melee class, but I guess this is the next best thing, pop culture references abound.

Finally the demo can handle himself better at short range. I swear the sniper is the only class that can kill at long and short range.

it was mentioned here http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2851

And I can't believe they actually went for the shield and sword for the demoman. I was hoping that we'd get that C4 charge that the demoman had in the old TFC times. A bomb that had an enourmus explotion range, could blow open certain doors and wasn't a shit you could do about it. Now thats a weapon to exchange for the stickybomb, not that shield crap. The sword I get, its demoman's answer to the sandman
