TF2 Free Weekend -- Free Permanently?

I have yet to buy Team Fortress 2, because I just got a computer that could run it recently, and I've been waiting for a free weekend to try it out -- knowing full well that they probably would do one once the pyro update came out. Well, for various reasons, I was unable to actually play the game until 1.6 hours before the promo period was over. I'm pretty sure I played for more than 1.6 hours, but when I look at my steam games list, I see a "play" button instead of a "purchase" button. There's also no counter showing how much time I have left on the free weekend. Did Valve pull another, sneakier version of the Free Portal stunt here, or do you guys think I'm seeing some sort of glitch?

Edit: I've partially figured it out. The game will still load, but I cannot connect to any servers. I've tried a couple of free weekends for other games, and I've never had it do that. Weird.

Well it's still the weekend. So it's still free to play.

It's free for the weekend and the weekend only (I think, but it is definitely not permanent), but it will be on sale to buy for a while.

I just did. There's no counter -- and I'm past the deadline on the last counter I looked at -- but it's still letting me play -- which means there's either a glitch on the timer, or somehow it registered the full version to my account.

I remember reading that it all ended on the 14th, so... yeah.

They're kind of fuzzy about their definition of "weekend" a lot of the time. I've had stuff keep working (and also stay on sale) well into Monday several times.

Turns out that's not the issue. The game is still there, and I'm guessing I can probably still play single player, but it tells me it's not registered to my account when I try to log onto a server. It's odd that I can even get far enough to try to connect to a server, but there it is.

Edit: No single player either, just the menu system is working.

Well, that's new. Stuff stays in my games list when the time runs out (so you don't have to re-download the entire thing if you decide to buy it), but it's greyed out and doesn't let me attempt to play it. Wonder if they broke that with all the recent updating they've been doing.

You can play single player now, they improved the bots!

... no. it's not. In fact, I thought I was purchasing it when I was really just downloading the free trial game. It is expired for me. haha.

They would never give TF2 for free.

You know, if I hadn't downloaded the Serious Sam HD demo a few days before the free weekend, I would be; however, Serious Sam is more my kind of FPS. I'm not really a fan of where the genre has gone since the early 2000's, and Serious Sam is a nice throwback to the early days. TF2 is close to what I'm looking for in an FPS, but Serious Sam is exactly what I'm looking for.

Oh, and the single player I was referring to was the training mode; it loads up to a certain point, tells me that the game isn't registered to my account, and bumps me back to the menu screen where I can change my options and stuff.

Keep in mind I don't understand computers at all.
