I autosaved in KotOR, and 3 seconds after that I died. I autoloaded and lived!
I'm not the kind of person that remembers to save, I get too immersed and God did I need autosave on this game. I would go through like 99% of a hard bit then die right at the end. Best example : The rancor in the sewers -_- I killed every one of the guys (can't remember the name of them I played it soo long ago) then this big thing is here and I had no idea what to do.

Any game that doesn't autosave frequently is not a game that is well-designed. Bugs and crashes happen, even to games that are usually stable. It's the nature of the beast on PC.

Sort of unrelated to the best autosaves, but Half Life 1 lacked autosaves, and when I spent two hours before being sliced to bits by an unseen fan, only to be put right back to the start of the game, that was really annoying.
Half Life had auto-saves, what are talking about?

Well, Half-Life:Source lacked them. Or maybe it was an option. Hmm. HL:S was a glitchy game at times.

Dragon Age also has auto save. Too bad it tends to save the moment before a big group of enemies sees my group. I hated that. So I turned off the auto save and frequently used the quick save button. I prefer to be in control of my saves and if I don't save for an hour and the game bugs up, I swear and continue on.

But, Dragon Age doesn't get buggy through my experience. Morrowind on the other hand... I was pressing F5 every 3 minutes.

Most Loved: Dragon Age. Sometimes I'll forget to quick save or save for hours on end and then the game will crash. Auto-save means I'll lose minutes rather than hours.

Most Hated: Mass Effect. It's pretty much pointless. It's really lacking. It'll autosave whenever you fast travel in the citadel but not when you enter a structure on an uncharted world. Stupid.

What I would have given for a quicksave button with ME1 on the 360.

My favourite Auto Saves?

Always a miliseconed before some unseen enemy shoots me in the face with a shotgun.
Fallout 3.

Exit room, it autosave. Go outside. Three sentrybots there. It autosaves just as they all fire rockets at me.

Well, there is that autosave in Far Cry 2 (I have a program that can autosave ANY game)...literally, my health was down to one bar, needed to stabilize my health, and I was being shot at by three enemies...

I ALWAYS prefer manual saves.

Ah, I misread the thread title as "Thank you god for auto-saving" that would have been an interesting topic.

On topic, auto-saves in Fallout 3 saved me quiet a bit of work several times due to the game spontaneously decided to up and die. That engine has more bugs then the Amazon rainforest. A notable one is where I'd been spelunking about exploring map points for quiet some time before entering some random silo and leaving, causing the engine to ritualistically disembowel itself for some reason. Luckily the game saves at loading screens and no progress was lost.

I remember playing Fallout 3 and going into a place called "Lucky's". There was a marionette with Lucky Shades on. I picked it up but not taken it and it fell through the marionette, unreachable. I spent about 10 minutes trying to get it back with mines and grenades, like how you get the giant teddy at one of those satellite places. Then I discovered the game had autosaved as I went into the building, so I reloaded and grabbed the Lucky Shades off the marionette. I've worn them ever since and they look pretty sexy...
