Sweet, never noticed that before. People with the 'fat guy' sprite tend to be Hikers or Burglars (and every Hiker in Gen 1 & 2 was a fat guy), so maybe he's on a cross-country tour? Or a crime spree?
Maybe it's like all the nurse Joys scattered throughout the world: a string of brothers who have taken to travelling around the world as tour guides?
surely this is an example of how the pokemon series has always been decades behind current technology, duno why its labelled "technology" unless to highlight the lack of.

He was doing great losing weight, but in gen 6 he let himself go a bit and gained some back it seems. :/
Okay, it's strange that you mention that as I only watch this video not too long ago.
I don't know much about pokemon (only played red/blue and yellow) but that "evolution of man" image shows his head is getting substantially larger as time goes on. Also, the first generation of this character looks like an obese Shin Chan.

I like to think he's the same guy. His name is Fred (in my head). He does a lot of travelling but he's fat because he has to stand in the first town all day every day just waiting, and so he eats. He stand there just waiting for the fresh, new pokemon trainer to come along, to get that first glimpse of the future of pokemon trainers, to see the excitement in their eyes as they go by him. Some might say Fred is a strange fellow, but I think he has a lot of heart and spirit. May Fred live on and I hope to forever see him in whatever adventures I go on next.
