The only one I can think of is MMO. Shooter, RPG, RTS, MOBA... I've tried several and they're just not fun. Every single one is an unrewarding grindfest with a community of players that makes me disable any form of communication within seconds lest I puke and/or lose all hope for humanity.

Not to say I don't like multiplayer. I love gaming with my friends. Not "facebook friends" but my real pals. Generally sitting in the same room with them splitscreen on a console or on a LAN. In a setting where broken wind can give one a tactical advantage.

I've also had great times in restricted online multiplayer, Invite only and such. I've even joined in on some co-op squad games with fellow Escapists and had some good times. LFD or even Borderlands and such. I've always wanted in on (or have been willing to host) an Escapist only JC2 or Minecraft game. But I've never enjoyed stepping out into the great masses that are "random" game or mmo types. I was one of the original "Neverwinter Nights" players. No, not that one... the one on AOL back in '91. The first non-text-based MMO. And I got turned away from that when things got all "guild-ey." "Why can't we all just adventure and help each other out, it used to be us against the game... now it's us against us." That turned me away from MMO's for life.

That's most of my problem with the culture too. The toxicity of MMO's is this at it's most entitled, childish, and worst.

Anime and Manga.

I generally like the artwork, but the stories themselves I just can't seem to get into.

I guess it's because they're based on mainly Japanese (or Far Eastern) sensibilities, meaning that they'll usually (usually, not always) be over-dramatic, or feature insanely exaggerated situations, and generally feature some sort of "finding the power within yourself" bollocks not to mention the blatant disregard for other languages (goes both ways, both mixing Japanese words with English and mixing English words with Japanese, not to mention the occasional German).

Also, WTF goes on with the name Testarossa?!?

Now, I'm a petrolhead, which means I know where the name "Testarossa" originates. It's from the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, which is named as such because of the red valve covers of the 3.0l V12 in that car, not to mention the handling which seemed to be the automotive embodiment of a "firey redhead".

Now can someone explain why the hell an introvert blonde, and a timid "bluette" (or whatever the hell you call someone with blue hair) are named after the Italian word for "Redhead"?!?

I basically like games and that's it for the geek culture thing.
But obsessively so.
I can enjoy a decent anime(Or at least entertaining like SAO, I hear its a"bad" anime though), but I'd prefer a regular movie normally.

If we're talking specific things, far too many to list. I'm the kind of guy who likes some anime but hates far more of it. I like sci fi but hate Star Wars, thinks 2001 A Space Odyssey was a chore to sit through and think Dr Who is dumb. The more I go on the more I will draw ire from all corners :p
Heh, I guess you already said it yourself, but that kind of... selective appreciation must simply make you a killer at parties! That is, before everyone stops talking with you. Though out of those three I'd agree on the two latter ones.

Yeah it's unfortunate that people seem to have this expectation that you've got to like what they like to be "normal" or at least somebody they want to socialise with.

It can work both ways though, given I don't have much time for people I think have crappy taste myself anyway :p

Superhero comics, always thought they were boring, all these bloody marvel and dc superhero films are driving me insane. I never understood the appeal.

I'm a technology and gaming nerd. I don't watch TV at all and do not get any of the pop-culture references from you guys. I lived in Japan and never got into Anime/Manga etc. I read non-fiction, watch documentaries and play way too many video games. But I can tell you the inner workings of your PC down to the circuit. I build networks. And I love math and science so much I volunteer to tutor. I've not seen the Batman movies, nor have I watched any of the superhero films.

There are some people out there mock my nerd creed for not being into the pop-culture foolishness, and I just laugh at them. Being a nerd and/or a geek is a state of mind, not what you watch or play.

For me I never got into comics and such. I don't know why, I've read a couple here and there but never went back for more. The same with Anime. I've watched quite a bit of anime. Watched quite a few shows, but was never particularly wowed by one. The problem I found with it is that after I watched a few shows, they all kind of blended a bit for me. Same character types and such. I do keep trying though but ehh, I can take it or leave it.

Time to make a few enemies.

Batman.

I loved the Batman Animated Series (Paul Dini 90's). That was great story telling. I enjoyed the Arkham games. Perhaps I should actually specify what's wrong.

Geeks love of Batman.

For everyone loving him because of how he's grounded and more accessible than other superheroes, a lot of them turn and say "NO ONE CAN BEAT HIM BECAUSE HE CAN ALWAYS PREPARE"

... It's just getting to the point of sheer stupidity. To Bash an Alien for being Beyond Human and uninteresting, but then in the same breath saying that the Batman can defeat said overpowered alien because he would have time to prepare for it is mind boggling to me. To create that sheer amount of plot armor to make your favorite nigh invincible and he can beat anyone because he can always think his way out of it retroactively makes Batman as boring as Superman. Which is even harder to swallow because so many people say they like Batman because 'there's risk to what he does, unlike Superman'.

But no one can ever get the drop on Batman. Never.

Here's an idea. Let's do an experiment. I'll give you all time to prepare. As much time as you want. We will give you years to practice for it. Everything you ever needed in life will be paid for. You don't have to worry about friends or family, it's all taken care of, so you can focus on getting ready. Once you and only you think you are in the correct conditioning, we'll do try this experiment.

I will fire a rail gun at you.

Straight to your chest.

You have to be standing right at the spot we determine and I'll fire it at you. and you'll have to survive. Hell, I'll tell you an hour before I'll do it. Put up a countdown on a speaker. so you know the very moment it goes off. And all you have to do is survive.

What's that? There's no way you could get out of the way in time or put on enough armor to defend from a 5-7 pound projectile going 1.5 miles per second? humanly impossible?

But you somehow insist that a man can reach into his special lead lined pocket to pull out a special rock ring if he had to because he's trained really hard to use against a being that can literally travel the speed of light?

Geek love of Batman ruins comic books. I love the tiers of danger. You got your street crime that vigilantes like Batman are supposed to deal with. You have city or region issues that more suitable heroes like Spiderman (at the low end) should be handling. And you have apocalypse type stuff that you better call Superman for.

But no. Geeks insist Batman can handle all levels. Because he'll never quit and he'll always have a plan. Just. As. Boring. As. Superman. Superman might have been designed to be a boring brick, but removing all danger from a hero because you all will pitch a fit doesn't make Batman any less boring.

is NO ONE else afraid that Captcha is sentient and the Brits fired Skynet into the sky years ago [http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-20781625]?!

Oh boy, where to begin...

Star Trek, Star Wars, Transformers, and anime and manga (though I enjoy DBZ) to name a few.

Comics are an odd one for me. Because as much as I enjoy comic book movies and TV shows, I've never actually purchased any superhero comics. Maybe that's because the nearest comic book store to me is about 30 minutes away...

I have never really enjoyed anime. I am sure that it is all well and good, but it is not really my kind of entertainment. I also don't care for Game of Thrones. I have tried to read the books and even watch the TV show several times. I just dislike it for some reason.

There was a person above that mentioned Batman, and I second that as well. I love Batman but typically dislike how "hardcore fans" of Batman try to make him this untouchable bad ass in all situations. It tends to ruin the character a bit IMHO.

I'm almost definitely going to need to go with action figures followed by magna and anime. I could just never really get into them. I know that there's good magna and anime out there too, just I've never really been motivated enough to go find them.

Dr. Who - just couldn't do it. I mean, that's the big one. I know I'd probably like it if I really gave it a serious chance, but there's just so much of it already out there that I'd have to work to enter that area and I just can't be bothered based on what I've seen of the show and the general fandom.

Also, my "Anime" category is very selective and I pass on the majority I come across. Now and then I'll latch on - or the old guard stuff back when like Dragon Ball, sure sure, but when it gets where I go "why what is? no" it's done.
