Hm. I really like the Half-Life level Surface Tension. Another good one is the Icewind Dale chapter where (spoiler alert)

:You return after clearing our an extensive network of caverns of an orc cult and a yuan-ti army led by a greater demon, only to return to the peaceful village that you set out from and find that: the druid who's guided you through the entire game so far is killed, the village itself is overrun by giant orcs, and your only chance of finding out what's going on is to venture to a long-lost fallen elven fortress, battling your way through an orc army and the ghosts of dead elves in order to find an insane elven astronomer and persuade him to help you save the world:

In what context? (Keep in mind the answers to the following options are just my opinion.)

Best looking level? The secret Quidditch arena in "Harry Potter Quiditch Cup". The music, and sounds effects plus general layout and colour scheme made it very pleasing to the eye and ear.

Best level design? Hmmm tough one... The school in the first "Silent Hill" was very well laid out. As oppose to the police station in Resident Evil 2 or any part of the dinosaur survival horror I can't remember the name of, I never got sick of the level. Nor did I ever become bored or want to jump out a window to escape.

Best level in regards to gameplay? As frustrating as they can be at times I have to say any of the dungeons in "Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time" where you played as adult Link. I can't simply choose one because as most critics that fault the series say all the dungeons are the same minus the elemental gimmmick to make you try to forget you've done this before and will do it agian. It is one of the few games I can just pick up again and again and fiddle around with. Not even Twilight Princess has the same draw for me though it is much, much prettier.

Aww that's the one I was going to pick. If you played that today it would STILL be intense.

I also loved Pegasus round 2 in God of War 2. It was a simple minigame but the music and the animations... just wow.

The one that is most fresh in my memory is the sniper level in Call of Duty 4. Suspense, seting, post-apoc feel when you get to the abandoned buildings, washed out colors... all of it, except for the ending when hordes of NPCs start to rush you and your NPC friend. Too bad actualy, up to that point it was perfect, down to the rabid dog that you could kill or let him live. The end part just broke flow and craped all over itself.

The triple-headed tentacle monster level in Half-Life 1 where you have to activate three parts of a gigantic flamethrower.

Just awesome how the monster can only hear you and never see you.

The water temple in Ocarina of Time.

I'm not kidding, I loved that level.

Right now my fav is the Sander Cohen level in Bioshock. There's so many great parts to that level- the pianist, the statues, the iceman, the irony... :)

Intervals 8 and 9 in Fear. Interval 8 was breathtaking. It provided new scenery and also integrated virtually every style of gameplay possible into one level. You can play like "The heavy for uncomplicated damage soaking thickies, the spy for your backstabbing stealth-game dirt bag and the sniper for the people who like point and click adventure games, although admittedly the only puzzle is use gun on man." (thanks Ben). Interval 9 upped the freaky factor for all games and is noteworthy in its own right.

I have to say the final boss fight with bowser in Yoshi's Island.

It was interesting, fun, unique and just difficult to be considered a final boss fight.

Not to mention that it scares you straight with a giant shadowed bowser running towards you, destroying the platform with falling rocks, fireballs, and you, yoshi, throw oversized eggs over and over again hoping that the next hit will kill him cause your out of eggs and his shodowed body takes up 3/4 of the screen already.
