The Big Lie of Brandon Crisp

A CBC special report on the death of Brandon Crisp attempts to showcase the horror of videogame obsession, but reveals a completely different kind of horror in the process.

Is it not the job of professional news outlets to weave half-truths and lie, spread innuendo and play to stereotypes of sub-cultures to better pander to the members of the audience who want to believe that they are part of the mainstream cultural elite now that bloggers and citizen jornalists are making much of their industry obsolete? oh, sorry. I was thinking of Internet Trolls.
At least she didn't make it seem like all videogamers cosplay (24/7 or otherwise) or that they all think they are reincarnations of videogame characters whom other gamers believe they are married to.

What can you say? Videogames, the internet, computers, they're destroying TV. More and more people are choosing to pick up a controller or a keyboard rather than the remote and the TV networks are hurting because of it. Anything they can do to paint this competitor for the attention of brain-dead drooling couchspawn in a negative light is a good thing for TV. Heavens forbid that they should have to change their business model to remain competitive. Smear campaigns are cheaper.

Yeesh, makes the Daily Mail sound like rank amateurs.

I suppose this stems from the insecurity that computers and games are eating TV ratings alive in a slow but unstoppable manner.
Ah well, it reflects worse on them than the gaming industry (to me at least).

Andy Chalk wonders why the fifth estate didn't do an in-depth report about parents who let their young teenage children play M-rated videogames unsupervised in their bedrooms.

Because if they did that, they would have to blame the parents, not some faceless evil corpartion, just like listening to metal causes kids to be satinist, watching TV rots the brain and the parents can do nothing about it!!!!

Not like there kids will allow them to turn off the TV, stereo, or take that gaming systems, people are stupid, plain and simple

CBC should just stick to episodes of The Mercer Report, This Hour has 22 Minutes, the glory days of Red Green and Air Farce, and Peter Mansbridge. Their jokes are funnier.

Great article, but I wish you would've mentioned the fact that the CBC is canadas publicly funded TV channel, and it is us Canadian taxpayers who are literally paying for this garbage. It is also well known that the CBC panders to the government of the moment (currently the conservatives) to ensure more funding, which could explain the bias in this "news" story. Personally, I think we should outlaw trees :p

Wow, this makes me seem smart!
Surely there is some kind of organisation designed to stop this amateur bullshit from being shown.

No, it's more like NBC, if NBC were owned by the federal government. Just a few years ago the CBC was brutally liberal (when the liberals were in power). I do have to clarify that conservative in canada is still a little left of center.

Be glad our media isn't wise to the trick of demonizing the latest thing. To be honest, it always staggers me that people of the last generation forget that their own parents demonized them too. From Elvis and his "pornographic hip swaying" to rock & roll, its just one depressing cycle of a) get demonized, b) forget your interest was ever demonized, c) demonize whatever the next generation are into.

On the plus side, at least its pretty likely they'll fail - just as Elvis, Rock & roll, etc, are all thought laughably tame today.

Also, the government report on video games here was written by someone who knew what she was talking about and advised parents to supervise but encourage. Seriously, its perhaps the only good thing the UK government has done in a long time.

I'm going to watch this now. I don't think it's fair to comment on the material second hand, how would I be any different from them otherwise. I will comment a little on a review I've glanced at on the programme:

[link]http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20090306.ARYAN06/TPStory/TPEntertainment/Television/[/link]

From some of what I've read here it does seem like it's using Brandon's tragic accident to lead into a case demonising online gaming and gaming in general.

I find it odd that they suggest that COD4 and GTA IV are solely about killing targets. While that is a lot of the core gameplay it ignores the narrative. GTA IV is the story of an immigrant's descent into an urban underground criminal network. COD4 is the story of the actions taken in war, it looks at the struggles, the bonds, the tension, the split second decisions and the horrifying acts involved. Though it wraps it up in a 24 style action package, it doesn't coat over the grittier aspects.

Not this shit again! I still say that the parents of Brandon Crisp were lying about his "obsession" with gaming to cover their own arses. This is one of the shoddiest peices of news broadcasting I've ever seen and I've seen the Jack Thompson news report after the Virginia Tech massacre! When our parents where our ages I'm sure that their parents hated what they liked, but they still did it anyway. And now they expect us to stop it just because they cant handle their own kids!
EDIT:
Y'know after watching through the whole thing, the stupidity seems to increase with every minute so I've decided I'm going to make a video on this bullshit!

A quote from the great movie, South Park:

before somebody thinks of blaming us!"

I watched about 5 minutes of it before I had to watch off. Its a ridiculous, and insanity bias already. I would write in and complain, but given this is one of those bias TV shows *cough-Jeremy Kyle-cough* I couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing and write a comment to complain. Add to that, they'll only claim something stupid like "Video game fans are whiny"

Well, I meant biased and overly conservative.
