I love me my Ms. Marvel. She's behind only She-Hulk as my favorite Marvel superheroine.

But I really don't think Marvel has any clue what to do with her. She wasn't even in Marvel vs. Capcom (and yet Wolverine-clone X-23 was?).
The problem is that outside of those who read Marvel comics Miss Marvel is pretty much unknown. There haven't been any movies or TV shows about her so not many people have heard of her. Given that she isn't going to be in the Avenger's movie it looks like she'll continue to remain unknown.

I believe the only well known Marvel character are from Spider-man, Iron Man, the X-men, and the Hulk; mainly because they all had or still have TV shows. Until they made the movie about Thor he was generally unknown as a Marvel character.
Still doesn't explain her strange absence in Marvel vs. Capcom, which has such "famous" characters as Dormumu, Rocket Raccoon, X-23, MODOK, Taskmaster, Shuma-Gorath... I mean, I ADORE Nova ("Annihilation" was the best thing Marvel's done in decades), and I fully view Nova as A-list now, but he's still rather obscure outside of Marvel comics.

So where's Ms. Marvel in all this?

This is why I am not an America Comic book geek. Things like this. Thanks Bob. I may try and find some Miss Marvel because of this.

Having fallen out of comic books, and only really knowing much of ms Marvel through this and maybe a google search (though I doubt I will), I'd say I'd probably enjoy ms marvel and spiderman together. Oh yeah, it would suck for mary jane, and theres no way the newspaper comic section would pick it up, but eh.

Spiderman and Ms. Marvel? I know nothing of her personality outside of the last two episodes of this show so I have to ask, is that a good match?
Both have very powerful moral compasses and a pretty laid back attitude. Peter is a geek who toughened up and Carol is a military type who's become somewhat softer. So despite having completely opposite backgrounds, Peter is always put forward as a liberal type while I think Carol should be more of a conservative, they could meet halfway pretty easily I think.

But with characters like these, that have been around for 40 years and who change depending on the era they find themselves in, I'd say its pretty much up to the writer.

WAIT what about here relationship with Wonder Man? I swear I recall them being an item for a while there.
That idea got axed somewhere. I've got a book from after they decided it wasn't going to work and they make a remark about it ('My Fair Super Hero', fun little mini-series). They're still friends for all its worth.

It's a constant tug of war between Marvel and Capcom and what would fit. I'd have gone with Ms Marvel over Nova, but now he's in we're probably not going to see her as their movesets would overlap quite a bit. (The only Nova story I know is that bit with Spider-Man and the Tri-Sentinel... He was brand new then I believe. Talk about an outdated frame of reference...) But yeah, many decisions are made by Japanese designers who don't read the comics and simply pour through Marvels archives and pick out the stuff that speaks to them.

I love all the weird quirky character they put in the game. I was always a fan of Modok, Task and Dorm , its a dream come true I can finally play as those guys. The fact that two of those three are actually really good is just icing. Shuma was already in MvC2 and very popular in Japan.

X-23 I agree with. That was completely out of the blue. Its been said Capcom wanted a young girl and apparently Shadowcat or Jubilee didn't make the cut or something...? And isn't Psylocke current again in the comics, she was also a fave from MvC2 where'd she go? Emma Frost perhaps? On another note, they made Jubilee a vampire in the comics, what the F is up with that?!

Track down a trade of Marvel's "Annihilation". While the heroes of earth were having a hissy-fit in Civil War and being very UN-heroic, Nova was out there with a rag-tag group of cosmic warriors trying to stop an entire army of genocidal monsters from killing everything in the universe. "Annihilation" single-handedly made Nova one of my favorite characters and catapulted him from C-lister to A-tier hero, and the final showdown between Nova and Annihilus, in one-on-one combat with the fate of the entire universe at stake, was one of those comic stories I used to love, do dearly missed, and was thrilled to see return. A hero being a hero in the face of overwhelming loss and terrible odds. Go Nova.

A giant tentacle monster is popular in Japan? Why am I not surprised?!

Er, yeah. I have no idea why they did that to Jubilee either. It was... random. Then again, a lot of what has happened recently, especially since "House of M", has been utterly random and has changed most of my favorite characters (especially Wolverine). The golden age of the X-men, from the 80's and early 90's, is sort of gone and became rather messy nowadays.

I'd counter this, but if I was gonna use them for anything important. I kinda wouldn't be watching your shows.

I like writers like Claremont and Johns and all, but there's a very specific way they earned that title of "great comics writer," which is that they patched up the serious flaws of the system, and that bugs me a lot. Outside of American superhero comics, the editors don't have this extremely broad kind of control over everything, and no one says "every comic is someone's first" because it's just common sense, even for continuity nightmares like Bleach.
I will see your Bleach and raise you an X-Men any day, my friend. I'm not sure any single comic series (English or Japanese) can match the absolute cluster-fuck of continuity that is the X-Men, with more alternate realities and futures (that actually matter to the story) than you can shake a stick at, and a cast that makes Bleach look like a one-man show.

Still, it's that "every comic is someone's first" mentality that makes a lot of comics easy to get into, without reading decades of backlogged material or hitting up Wikipedia for a day. Do you really think someone could start up the current arc in Bleach the same way and manage easily?

Acutally I remember in the great X-men animated series in the 90's you mentioned they DID do an episode where we learn Rogue indeed stole her powers from Miss Marvel. And then she awoke from a coma, sth sth... Maybe it was a dual episode or small seasonal story arc, whatever.

Cool episode as always, keep em coming, as long as it's about WEIRDDDD stuff!!!!
Yupo, or at least she drains a superheroine's powers. I remember that (and something to do with a plane?) from the series, iirc Rogue was kinda upset over it but this was watched when I was a kid and a long time ago so don't take it as gospel.

Anyway, cool. I don't read comic books but no knowledge is useless and I do like dipping in to the mythos every now and again, I'm glad she got the treatment she deserved because I have to admit, the whole psychic powers to manipulate her into sex thing left me decidedly uncomfortable.

Anyway, next time you do a Comics Are Weird segment, Deadpool. Freaking Deadpool all the way.
I second this. Marvel seems to have MINES of strange things you can use and Deadpool's made for that.
Correct me if i'm wrong (i don't read comics) but isn't deadpool's core conceit that his comics break the fourth wall all the time? And therefore any criticism Bob could level at the thing could be easily explained by a trite, 'but they did it ironically' explanation?

Well actually I needed these brain cells to learn the History of Uruguay but I prefer using them for this actually.

Damn it, Bob! Much like my hard drive I was going to use any and all extra space in my brain to store porn. Nice though her funbags may be, Ms. Marvel wears simply too much clothing to waste such precious mental capacity on.

While the previous episode was definitely warranted due to how insane and awesome that story is, this one didn't do it for me quite so well. Perhaps because it sounds like, at least as far as the soap opera that is the comic book universe goes, everything's back to normal and pretty much was as soon as whosits got his character back at the beginning of today's story.

Bob, I have finals next week, I'm technically not using my brain cells for anything that doesn't involve Faulkner. Kudos for (briefly) saving me from that Southern writer, also I've gone cross-eyed.
My mother is a fish!

Anyway, I never really deeply got into comics except Suicide Squad which was awesome, and Doom Patrol which is weirder than this stuff on purpose. Do Doom Patrol Bob. You know it is the weirdest.

Except maybe Uncle Ben. Of course even that has been opened up for debate.

Just kidding, I don't eat instant rice.

I have to tell you that the last line in this video (other than the usual send-off) was the most I've laughed at MovieBob's jokes in a good while!
