Well, Green Lantern already made some $70 million in its opening weekend if you include international receipts, so there's at least a reasonable chance it will make back the ~$200 million it cost to produce. Include DVD/BluRay/download sales and it's almost a given.
But since they're probably under-representing the production cost, it's probably higher than 200 million. Between bad word-of-mouth and terrible reviews all over, it's sure to burn out quickly. And even if it breaks even, will producers be willing to fork over another quarter billion on a sequel? That's quite a gamble.

I don't see why so many people thought the Green Lantern movie was so bad. I thought it was the best they could hope to do, and they did pretty good all things considered. But no, it probably won't get a sequel because the movie-going public knows nothing about it. WE know a lot about it as comic fans, but that's because DC topped every issue in their comics line with an ad for the movie so we couldn't forget it. And months from now, when I'm waxing nostalgic or making a review of one of those and dig the issues out of my comics box, I'm going to look back and wonder what the fuss was about.

This is why people should pay more attention to the ads when reading comics. For one, those are the guys allowing you to read it in the first place, so the least you could do is glance at it. But more importantly, because ads act as a sort of condensed version of the business and culture of that era. People will look back at the issues with the GL movie and see that yes, that was a big deal at the time.

As for the DC reboot, I can't help but think this isn't a transient, temporary thing. And while this means that all the character development done in the last few decades is now null and void for these new versions, maybe this is for the best. Maybe it is time to retire the decades of continuity and start again.

Now if only this didn't render the "conclusion" to the JLA's Rise of Eclipso event so inconsequential in the long run. And yeah, I'm still sore after that.

WTF what the hell is wrong with Youngblood? I own many Youngblood comics including the first five issues. I like the style, the grittiness, and compared to other titles of the time was a bit more mature.

Must be his whole "The 90's sucked" mindset. I'll grant you not a lot of good came out of the 90's but not everything that was from that decade sucked.
Not sure if serious, but you know Rob Liefeld? Dude is the most hated comic artist in the industry. Also, Linkara reviewed it [http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/linkara/at4w/7134-youngblood], and he only reviews bad comics.

If you can't see what is wrong with his drawings, god bless you.

I was about to make a comment about how it would be nice if Bob would cut out this almost smug, nigh on sanctimonious attitude of his that keeps seeping into his shows. But then I realized that the attitude is exactly why The Escapist loves Bob, most people will either walk away from this vigorously nodding their heads or fuming with anger. Either way we'll usually come back next week.

I'm glad someone on The Escapist's payroll isn't all over Nathan Fillion's balls. Sure I may have only seen maybe two episodes of Firefly and maybe about half an hour's worth of Serenity, but I'm at least sure enough that Fillion isn't exactly Odin's gift to cinema, if you catch my drift. I'm not saying he's a terrible actor - far from it - but seriously, what the fuck? From what I've seen, he's been put on a geek pedestal of Wil Wheaton proportions, and that's scary.

And since I'm pretty sure that last paragraph didn't earn me enough ire, what exactly is so special about Big Trouble In Little China? I was forced to watch this film hundreds of times due to my older brother being completely obsessed with it at the time, and now that I've grown to be somewhat of a cinephile, I can honestly say that Big Trouble was the weakest film John Carpenter ever made, and the third or fourth worst thing that Kurt Russel has ever been in. Am I completely missing the point and it's supposed to be one of those "so bad it's good" cult films like Troll 2 or Rocky Horror Picture Show, or do people genuinely think this is a good film? Seriously, if you made a YouTube clip containing only Kurt Russel's dialogue, it would be the most painful performance to sit through since those fucking cops in Superbad.

I'd also like to point out that there seems to be a curse involving these superhero films. It seems that if you're fated to take on both a Marvel and DC character, both films will suck and you will be horribly miscast as those characters. Case and point: Halle Berry for Storm and Catwoman, Ryan Reynolds for Green Lantern, Deadpool and Hannibal King and Eve Mendes for Sand Saref and Roxanne Simpson.

So far the only ways to break this "curse" from what I've noticed is that if at least one of those properties are really obscure, or the character they're portraying in at least one of those properties are obscure. Examples:

Samuel L. Jackson - Octopus [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit]/Nick Fury [http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0lJZp5QSlTY/TVSMIlccf2I/AAAAAAAAcvg/jK_jsM7Xnz8/s1600/duh_can.jpg]
Natalie Portman - Evey Hammond [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_for_Vendetta]/Jane Foster [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Foster_(comics)]
James Marsden - Richard White [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_returns]/Cyclops [http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0lJZp5QSlTY/TVSMIlccf2I/AAAAAAAAcvg/jK_jsM7Xnz8/s1600/duh_can.jpg]
Parker Posey - Kitty Koslowski [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_returns]/Danica Talos [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade:_Trinity]
William Hurt - Richie Cusak [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_History_of_Violence]/General Ross [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_Ross]

DC on the left, Marvel on the right.

In today's market never rule out sequals. Give bean counters a little credit to look foreward. Replace a director, less marking for awareness of the character and apoligizing for the first crappy trailer, issue a few groveling apoligies to the press for free and explain the first movie was just to get the character out there, now you'll get the good stuff, and suddenly we'll be cautiously optimistic again. Though I still expect this is going to go into the "ignored but never overtly contridicted" pile.

Nathan Fillion: I think we forget Firefly was a decade ago and can't hold that up to what he'd play today.

Dark Knight Rises: Yeah, Ledger's death seemed to get people into a good movie by accident. I have faith Nolan could make the Penguin badass, but we're not getting that fluke again (which is fine because I couldn't get into the theatre for a while for all the sold out shows.)

Tanooki: never cared for the suit in the first place (the statue always wore off while an enemy was on me) but I agree witht he concept. I also miss colorful nonsensical fun games over all the realistic shooters.

DCU: You give it too much credit. I say six months (enoguh time for a justifiable trade) before it's back to normal.

DNF: The game is fine, just stuck 10 years ago. One thought that with development time changes in the game culture would have had an impact. Instead it's an unrefined FPS that still thinks it can coast on a few boobs and toilet humor, but even that's pretty mundane by some of today's standards and what isn't is in such bad taste it isn't funny. On the plus side, if there was ever a justification for gamestop's used game rack.

Nathan Fillion is the new Bruce Campbell?! DAAAAAAAMN, that was deep! My mind is still spinning from that revelation.

Also, loved Big Trouble in Little China! Any movie where the actor (in this case Kurt Russel) plays a parody of himself playing an action hero is certifiable gold!

IF Green Lantern does pull in enough money then there is a chance of a sequal

heard that it's already pulled in 1/4 of it's budget

and there was a scene after the credits that yells "sequal"
You stayed for the credits?!!

Am I the only one who thinks moviebob is getting a bit much of himself? I mean the guy has a dozen opinion shows so I can't blame him for having a big head, but he's beginning to state his opinion as fact a bit too much and he's lost his objectivity lately. I mean 40% of his hating on the green lantern movie was for how it disappointed him in that he didn't get to see as much of the corps as he wanted and 40% about how the story was derivative. I haven't seen it yet but I don't know, the non-nerddom audience may actually like it.

That's just one example, tho. I may have to cut back on my bob or I may stop liking him as much.

I disagree with Bob about The Dark Knight Rises, I think it will be bigger and better then it's predecessor in almost every way. For once I think the hype will be justified as well as rewarded.

This is my feeling exactly. As much as I wish Nathan all the success in the world, I love him just the way he is.

Besides, him becoming a big time movie actor means less opportunity to stalk him at conventions. SO. That settles that.
Frankly, I think Castle is subtly his most cheeseball role yet, and that's with the two ginned-up supermen included. Never mind the thinly-veiled references to Firefly, never mind the poker games with cameos by real-life mystery novelists. I thought it was clever and amusing when they had the books mentioned on the show actually written and published. But they one-upped my amusement by having Fillion GO TO BOOK SIGNINGS for books written by his character.

And now they have a movie coming out. Based on a book. Based on a fictional character in a TV show. And then on the SHOW, they had the actual actress playing Nikki Heat in the actual movie, make a guest star appearance as a fictional actress playing in a fictional film version of the same novel. ABC has singlehandedly redefined the term "meta".

Oh, and I think they solve murders sometimes, too. I don't really notice.

I've seen Big Trouble in Little China several times, though only rather recently as I found it on DVD after basically just having vauge memories from when I saw it the first time in my childhood. It all reminded me of the first Pirates of the Carribean movie, as Kurt Russel seemed to have the same role as Johnny Depp, with his character taking all the fame from the supposed hero of the story.

My only complaint is that they didn't go even more crazy about the concept and expanded the screen time, but I suppose budget issues got in the way. The special effects shown were probably not cheap to put it mildly.

In overall though, a great movie that made fun of its own genre. For me the most important aspect of it was that it was something different from all the other stuff that floods the video rental store. Heck, even now I still find it refreshing! Exploration of the chinese setting (and many other asian cultures) is way too rare as I see it.

She's wearing too much clothing? She's not giving us a more 'come-hither' look through the fourth wall? Her breasts are too small?

Sorry, I just can't see what you're talking about! (J/K)

You should've said "I'm Bob, and all those small snippets are this weeks Big Picture" ;)

I hope you are right about the DC reboot, and I suspect you and I will be right on this.
After a year it'll all be back to normal. Phew! Because normal = safe. :p

Dark Knight Rises doesn't have to be as amazing as The Dark Knight. As long as it's as good as Batman Begins I will be thrilled.
