Spring Breakers is a shitty movie. If you have to dig that deep to find something of value in it, then you're making it up. You're seeing things that just aren't there. It's also poorly shot. Kind of nauseating.

As for "Blue is the warmest color", I really don't know what to think of that movie. It is, in a way, porn. It's not a hardcore porn obviously, but sex scene are more explicit than softcore porn. That's not an opinion. It's a fact. And one of the lesbian sex scenes lasted so long, I started laughing. It was an absurdly long sex scene. But I have to give my respect to the actresses. Shooting those scenes must have been hell.

If next week's list hasn't retroactively degraded the Batman and Superman movies to "worst of the year" status, I will be pleasantly surprised.

...But I wouldn't bet a bent nickel on it.

Don't forget Stah Trek: Into Dahkness. With another pot-shot at the Devil-incarnate J.J Abrams and complaining about a 'mystery box' idea that nobody ever gave a crap about.

Of the movies I've seen on this list, I mostly agree with Bob. Pacific Rim and Gravity were simple premises played out to perfection in my eyes. I also loved Pain & Gain. It was the perfect mix of funny and effed up. I'll also point out that I was pleasantly surprised by Lords of Salem being a runner up. I though that my friend Jim and I were the only ones who liked it.

I hate to be even a little off topic but that tone you used when talking about the cop from Fruitvale, you seemed to be implying you don't believe it was an accident. Everything about that case says accidental shooting. There is video of this you can watch, unless he was acting from the get go, which hey, I guess is a possibility, it seems pretty obvious it was an accident.
It was gross negligence and he deserved everything he got, but there was just no indication it was an intentional homicide.

Aside from that it is a good list, what I have seen of these movies I have liked.

Alright, MovieBob. I'll cut to the chase. This Is The End. Enormously funny movie. The funniest I have seen all year, in fact. You yourself really liked it! And yet you did not even give it an honorable mention. Please explain, if you would be so kind.
Huge movie. But he just a week or two ago loved "Anchor Man 2". I'm surprised that wasn't in his top 10. His top pic, I thought meh, much for these reasons:

and

Just, why aren't they stationed near the source of the monsters, using that giant sword to cut these suckers in 1/2.

Struck me as too BS.

If you take it for what it is: A popcorn movie about giant monsters hitting roadblocks in the form of giant robots then it is DAMN good! I went in to see giant monster vs giant robot fights and I was not disappointed. The graphics are REALLY well done (in 2D anyway - did not see it in 3D) and it actually has a somewhat coherent plot which is more than can be said of the Bayformers movies!

If you want to get a sense of what Pacific Rim is like without watching it I have just the thing for you!

My problem is putting a good popcorn movie at the very top of your best list and this was a good popcorn movie. I felt I was getting my money's worth every time I saw a Yager. Infinitely superior to the Transformers movies. But Movie Bob himself has said that things are better when they're actually about something. Today, spectacle is getting easier and easier to do. It's coming up with a compelling story, great dialogue, intriguing characters that I think sets one movie apart from another.

I'll have to check to see if other users are putting up top 10s in that forum.

This year certainly has been a great excuse to spend more time at the cinema. Glad Pacific Rim made it to number 1. It became an excuse to buy a blu-ray drive just for the movie and warranted the 4 viewings of the movie at the cinema. I love the future!

Only God Forgives is easily my film of the year.

Gravid with meaning, subtext and thematically potent action, and with a suave look that's consistent and exciting. Really a film for people sick of the usual Hollywood shite.

Runners up are Lords of Salem, Pacific Rim and Under the Skin.

Well, Pacific Rim was a great action movie. I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of the fight scenes and the effects did not disappoint. True, there were many technical issues with moving the plot forward and the acting seemd rather wooden to me. I'd put it in my top ten as well. Probably not all the way up to Number 1, but that's me. "Ender's Game" would have made my top 10, but I am probably too passionate about the original story.

I guess I'll be watching Pain & Gain in the near future.

Thanks for the list Bob. I hope I don't see "Man of Steel" next week. I didn't see a lot of movie this year, but I was disappoined most by "Burt Wonderstone" and "Stand Up Guys". Good talent--bad movies. I even enjoyed very lengthy "The Lone Ranger". I wasn't great, but it was watchable. Oh, wait.."Hansel & Gretel",

I cannot disagree with MovieBob any more than when it comes to Only God Forgives. How anyone can put that disjointed poorly directed, overwrought mess on even a runners up list is a mystery to me. The rest of the list was fine, but seriously, Only God Forgives?
I haven't seen it, but I've heard wonderful things about it from critics all over.

That being said, anyone who saw it who wasn't a critic absolutely HATED it.

Probably some disconnect in what is being looked at as "good".
You know, that touches on a theory of mine that critics and whoever decides who gets what award at the Oscars are really just trying to make themselves look superior and vastly more intellectual than the rank-and-file moviegoers. That's why we see all these movies that no one has ever even heard of - let alone actually seen - being nominated for Best Picture and such.

Or maybe a person whose job is to watch tons of movies each year has somewhat different taste than someone who watches a few blockbusters per year? Why the need to assign some kind of insincere intent to critics instead of accepting that different people like different things? I just don't get this type of attitude.

And I wouldn't say the Academy has a tendency to nominate obscure films for Best Picture. Most of the recent nominees have either starred famous actors, been about a famous person, based on a best selling book or they have been directed by a famous director.

Why? Because it's more fun that way, and to lure people who take everything way to seriously into displaying how they take everything way to seriously.

...wait a second. Mako Mori is groundbreaking? An introverted traumatised Japanese girl who pilots a giant robot is groundbreaking? I swear there are millions of those.

I felt like Thor 2 was a better overall movie than Pacific Rim, but the style and conceptualization of the latter is definitely one for the ages. I am really thinking I need to watch that movie again.

Mako Mori? Really? The chick with daddy issues and surrogate daddy issues who is haunted by flashbacks that cause her to faint whenever she has to pilot a mecha and gets rescued by Charlie Hunnam's white knight - whom she's been fapping to throughout the movie - in the big finale is your "strong female character"?

Exactly.
