Still hoping for things to happen like in that novel, where humans find out how to create wormholes that let them see anywhere in time and space :)

I feel towards this just as you, and its a shame. I remember some promises about mars being colonized by 2015 or something, I knew its a stretch but heck, I wish at least my children will see space colonization coming one day.

On the other hand, america isn't the only one having a space program, as you said. I hope lies within those who still dream...

Btw for all those folks thinking cutting the space program means that we will be feeding the starving and cure the ill... YOU ARE WRONG!
The money will be used to get the faulting economy back on its feet, or with other words, it will be used to help out people who once were rich. If the money were REALLY used to do good things, I'd be for it too, but ain't gonna happen friends.

Don't worry Bob, you're not the only one pissed that this country does not have a clear plan for space exploration. One of the best past times of my childhood was gazing at the stars and imagining the wondrous worlds out there and when am I going to visit them. I've accepted that I may never make it there in my life time, but that doesn't mean I can't condition my children to strive for that dream, well, not that specific dream, the desire to innovate. That's something we can focus on, give more incentive to learn and create and you'll find lots of people signing up to make the leap into hyperspace.

You know what happened to 'us', bob? We became a civilisation of whinging selfish manchildren who think that mars missions and ipods are more important than feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, or dealing with the huge global disasters that are looming in our near future.

we can fix world peace by finding aliens to go to war with nothing unites us more than a common enemy :p but in all seriousness the reason we don?t have world peace and all that is cuz resources are limited that?s why we need space travel so we can get more new resources to provide for everyone that?s the real big picture people who want world peace are naive

Mr. Bob, i guess

Sorry, long time watcher first time respond, SINCE I CANT GET EMAIL TO WORK.
*ahem* sorry about that. Any way, i believe what you said about the space progam, and its cancelatio are true, and have the same thoughts. And i thought i would share my defence against the 'bleeding hearts' with you. When (i'm an optimist, so sue me) space travel is put back in front, there are eventually going to be stations, outposts, docks, etc. NOt only will these thing provide jobs while they are running, but will also provide jobs to both skilled and unskilled laborers DURING CONSTRUCTION! The price will be high, but this could very well improve the economy. Also, assuming we get hydroponics down, we will increase the total area we have to grow food on, eventually leading to a reduction in world hunger. Science would be forced to take a notch up, like it did in the cold war. Hell, if we're lucky, some of the other countries will try to race us to colonize Mars, leading to a revival of the space race. We are going to get to study other things in space, in new and different conditions, whos to say we wont start finding new ways and new cures to diseases. This puch could in fact affect how we perceive the world and may bring about enough change that would aide in the creation of world peace. im not enough of an optimist to say world peace is possible, but this would definately be a steo in the right dirrection. And yes, i realise my typing is horrendous, as is my spelling. Tough it out. These are just my thoughts on the subject. Please respond if you could.

Thanks.

I'm sorry that the U.S.A,russa and the EU space program isen't working out. I was hoping we least build a small base on the moon, let alone mars yet. i'm a english male and even if the uk helped the program, Great Britin would likely go bankrupt, but. i'm sure if we all tried get off our computres and do something about it(like rise a saport canpain) we'ill get back on track. so don't worry bob, things will look up. we will get off the ground its just taking some time.

thanks for reading and i hoped this will help yer feel better.

Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong future. We could've had a Utopian-Supercity on Jupiter, but nooooOOOOOOOooo, 9/11 had to happen!! Hell, I'd honestly prefer the post-apocalyptic future then this one: at least then life would feel a bit more important then it does sitting around at a school/job/ computer at home. Our future just sucks.
Why do you think (almost) the whole western population spends time killing eachother in digital fantasy worlds? Were freakin misserable with "the real world".

Yes, we got food. We got shelter. We got entertainment. But all in all its just escapism for what we really want the world to be: A ground where the conflicts are how to survive and improve, not who is blessed by which deity or who called who a bad word. And we do nothing to stop the way it is going! We just keep standing in lines to get the newest vanity trinket first. Couldnt agree with you more on the post apocalyptic part. Living there would be better than this...

No, Im not referring to a revolution here. But I wish for a world where humans are ONE race, and working together to reach common goals. A place where the ones that enjoy sports can genetically engineer himself to be a prime athlete, a D&D fan can run around in forest fighting real dragons and party with real dwarves for a living, and an artist can work unrestrained.

its an utopia, I know. But its not a dream. We couldve been there if we werent so pitiful.

/rant

Btw, I like my life, just wish it was better :D
Don't worry, I enjoy my life too. But it just makes you wonder what could've been...

Good video, Bob. I agree that we won't see cities on Mars in our lifetimes but if we don't colonize another planet, or learn to conserve this one, we can consider the human race as good as dead. The 6th mass extinction, and as far as extinctions go, the biggest predators don't fare too well... Look at what happened to the dinosaurs.

Really, I agree that the Space program should not be our top priority.
And Its not because of the poor. But the US has a 14 TRILLION dollar debt going on... I don't think spending billions so we can colonize mars would really help that....

WTF! This is the stupidest thing the US has ever done. Do they not realize what we are giving up here? Do they not realize how much technology has come out of the space race that we all take for granted now? I'll justify spending billions of dollars on the future any day. Sure it may not have great benefits now, but space exploration could be our salvation from overpopulation in the future through colorization of new planets. I am sure there will be a lot more hungry people when Earth is bursting from its seems with people.

basically it's the the economy... and other domestic problem when you get right down to it the people ultimately holding the purse strings have to cut back on spending. thats what people think they want right now. low taxes and less goverment. and add onto that how after than one shuttle failed on reentry and showered north texas with debris the media didn't look at it how it use to look at space travel, no fox news decried how much money was being spent killing american heros. (but we totally need to stay in iraq in afgastistan for as long as possible, because that doesn't cost BILIIIONS of dollars and thousands of american heros) The economy sucks, glaan beck sean hannity and bill oreilly all get a primetime slot and until some changes are made we don't go back to space. do this suck? yes.
