As for the Hardware debate. In no way shape and form can your phone, your laptop or your console provide the same high fidelity experience that a modern desktop can.

Desktops have better visuals, audio and overall performance. Heck the basic gaming desktop of today is easily a generation ahead of the console. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.247185-Crytek-PCs-Are-a-Generation-Ahead-of-Consoles]

If graphics, sound and data storage did not matter, we would all still be playing Space Invaders.

Edit: Corrected generation gap and provided a link to the article. My old memory is not as good as it used to be.
Woot! All my favourite games are all PC Exclusive. When A console can do Total War or Civilization as well as a Computer then I'm sold (CivRev wasn't good imo). Console MMOs may be closer than we think though. Guild Wars 2 will have a mobile app to chat with people and access auctions. WoW already has that iirc so I guess we'll have to wait and see what Anet pulls off this time :)

*This is the "important" part of my post below*
I think what Bob is trying to say is that the colloquial usage of the PC is being relegated to other devices. What a PC does is being miniaturized. A blackberry is sufficient for business, an Apple Product is sufficient for artistic functions. That box running Windows or Linux is used to create all your little devices and games, some people will still use it for your standard games, especially those games which have yet to be effectively created for a console such as Mass Strategy or MMOs. Consoles have reached a point where they are just as good as a high-end PC and better than your average one. However, people who like customizing and accessorizing will still be using the box in your bedroom PC until consoles can rival these aspects.

TLDR: the box in your room PC is becoming a thing of the past as other mediums perform its tasks, however it will still remain in use as the jack of all trades machine.

I was told something somewhat similar by my eye doctor 2 years ago, that someday I'd tell my grandchildren about monitors.

That being said, of the 3 pictures that Bob showed at min. 2:11, I recognized the middle one as I was 3 when I first played it (extremely young, I know, but being autistic [asperger syndrome, to be more precise] my one and only interest was console and PC gaming). That was back when my parents owned the Accolade game console.

Damn I feel old. :(

I'm sorry, but this is completely wrong. On the other hand, it's understandable because it's from the view of someone outside of PC gaming.

First off, PC gamers, and many PC users own a PC today even though you can do many of the things you can do on them on another device, because in their nature, personal computers, are completely unrestricted. So in a sense, PCs will become more prominent than ever, because the next generation of consoles may very well just be a line of PCs with progressively less constricting firmware.

Also, real quick. PC games aren't just exclusively RTS and Flight Sim titles. They have a tremendous grasp on the shooter market too, because the control a keyboard and mouse give you when you're trying to shoot something is unbeatable. There's a reason why in PC shooters, you will often be sniped from across the map with an assault rifle. Some people might say this ruins the fun, and others, like me, will say that it encourages you to either find cover, or shoot back, because with enough practice, you can probably do the same thing.

So much for real quick. No. Alot of games are still much better on the PC than on their console counterparts, especially today, where most gaming PCs can outperform their simpler counterparts.

Lastly, if you think, even for a second, that PC gaming is dying based on trends of what other electronics can do, please, visit Newegg.com. Go ahead. Look over that site for even just a few seconds. I'm waiting.

The market for PCs slowly dying? No. The selections has gotten bigger than ever, and it will only keep expanding, and every year, more and more people are moving over to PC gaming for a plethora of reasons, the least valid of which is 'for nerd street cred' and the most of which is namely how much more convenient a PC is to use when you're not on the go.

If that still makes no sense, us PC gamers strain over the smallest details. I suppose this is true for console gamers, but I doubt that they look at performance as much.

The traditional, full tower PC, or no, let's not say that, the lanboy air's a case about the size of an xbox and allows more airflow than any full tower. The traditional full ATX pc will always put out more power, cheaper than any other device out on the market. That includes consoles, with the exception of the 'cheaper part'. Oh wait. Yeah. It includes that too. The 'manditory' big screen TV will still run you over a grand.

I don't know about you, but I like my choices. While most titles put out by EA and Activision do not support modding, other companies like Valve, Epic, and Crytek, do. Not even on the subject of modding, you can, and always be able to do much more with a PC than anything else. I'll leave that statement to your imagination.

Lastly, PC gaming is an entirely different world than what you've seen. It's exceptionally deep, and while consoles are pretty much pick up and play, you don't get nearly the depth to even measure against what a PC offers. No. It's not for everybody. Chances are, it won't be for you. PC gaming is for tinkerers, people who like to be control, people who want to know exactly what they're getting into, with specific needs and tastes. Those people aren't a dying breed, either. While certain reality TV shows might have you thinking otherwise, the population is actually getting smarter. Smart enough to, unlike me, post my flame-bait on a forum full of very critical gamers.

OH, one last thing. Unless developers start developing games on consoles, or some alternate platform, PC gaming will never die. That will never happen.

please,
PC gaming is the aryan race of gaming platforms
plus, honestly, i can't use my C++ on a fuckign XBOX
a PC can be easily updated, while a console has to revamp a new model, advertising etc.
rather a PC can be upgraded in individual areas.
You see the graphics on a PS3 next to the Wii, next to the 360, they will always be inferior to the PC, because there are NO LIMITATIONS to hardware.
plus i get free games on my computer via (ahem) pirate bay
and we can play all games from all consoles and platforms trhough emulators etc...
NOTHING IS PROPREITARY!
btw MAC's can go burn in hell. Ubuntu all the way, they have super mod-able coding for their emulators.
Bob, you're argument for motion controls is invalid, motion controls are a fad
however you do have very strong points, everything that I said can be solved if corporation chose to let consumers access the previous. Most likely not though, Nintendo can still brick your Wii for jailbreaking.

So what you're saying is, you want an xbox to be able to run the things a PC does, such as word and a browser. I assume you want to hook this up to a TV? This all takes up a space, a space in the house. You want to move the computer to where your xbox is. You just want a bigger screen. PC's are still very much alive, you just want to call it console.

From where I stand, your viewpoint became invalid when you said all you needed from a pc was Explorer and office.

All kidding aside though,

Didn't EA JUST come out with a big press release about how they are going to release games primarily for the pc because of the huge success of the Free-to-play models and the overall low cost of producing games on the system?

And calling mmo's "web based diversions" and ignoring the mega success that Zynga has become amongst the non-stereotypical gamer is just ignorant. : \

Even though I disagree with your statements in this weeks episode, I could not love your shows(and recently writings for extra consideration) any more than I do! Keep up the good work! :D

Oh, and by the way, PCGamer did a big discussion about this subject on the opposite side of you. They may be a bit biased to PC dominance but hey, they know the medium through and through!

And here's a question, with the axception of Witcher 2, why do I need a PC to play ANY of those games. oh that's right I DON'T.
but see, PC gamers can get games that are (supposedly) exclusive to consoles (like Halo games)
they can use emulators and massive amounts of third party programs to outsmart the corporation. with a console, the corporation has full control to limit your access to information, (nintendo bricking someone's Wii for jailbreaking). a PC exclusive game like Shogun 2 cannot be played on an Xbox or PS3 (fukc Wii) because the hardware and software limitations make it immensely for difficult or just outright near impossible to do so.
Good luck getting Shogun 2 on your Xbox, even the most pro hack teams like SaphiRRe and SKiDRoW have troubles

Modding.

End of story why PC's reign supreme.

The shit I've seen and downloaded with Oblivion, Total War and the Call of Duties, just destroy anything consoles will ever do.

And that is why this video is flawed.

So avid pc gamer, because it is so superior to console gaming. Mainly because mods are awesome and the keyboard and mouse combo.

BUT, you are also right. For this I love you, even though you bought into the lie about Black Swan :-D. I digress, I've been thinking for awhile now that the desktop is a dinosaur. I'm using one right now to type this. It's also because I am cheap. In order to get a laptop to do what this machine can do I would have to pay WAAAY more.

But I give it a generation or 2 before I just get a console and ditch the pc all together. I do find it odd that we are going back to having to use proprietary software and hardware again. Because that is all that's happening. Xbox = PC and Sony = Mac. Some weird cyclical thing I guess.

Edit: Just went back and started to actually read the thread. Didn't make it too far before I angrily wanted to tell someone they were wrong and more importantly WHY. A dangerous thread has been created :p

I point you to the rich indie games market and development potential PC has. Stuff like magicka and the Polynomial. Heck, super meat boy and mine-craft are on PC because the investment for PC developing is absurdly cheap. It takes nearly nothing to start developing and publish ( oh steam, how many guys in the studio apartment with a crap sack job have you made rather well off) make the PC the singular most easily accessed gaming platform. Java development costs a flat nothing to everyone who owns some kind of computer ( laptops would work too). Until the levels of rendering software and graphics hardware match each other when on a laptop the PC will be viable and even then the laptop will just become more mobile PC gaming (for people who call 20" monitor portable).

If you think I am wrong take a look at valve's franchises. L4D was a counter strike mod ( which is a mod of HL), portal was a college project, TF2 was a Half Life mod, and DotA was a warcraft 3 mod. When you can fully mod + develop on a console or other platform then you will see PC die. All other platforms call for you to have a minimal investment of that platform and the dev kit.

So bob, your argument is that the PC is dying because everything is becoming a PC?
Okay...

I like having my internet, office tools, art programs and games all on one portable laptop. Desktops may be dying out(and even then you can get more power from a desktop for cheaper tho that may change) but laptops are not. I can pretty much do everything on my laptop, I use it for art, for news, for work, for play and I?m playing shooters and action games on it too, not just RTS games. I often take it to uni with me and and it takes up less space than a console and doesn?t require a TV. Sure it costs more than a console but I need a laptop anyway. I don?t want dozens of different devices to do different things when I can have one thing that does it all. Surely it?s the same for allot of people so why would pc gaming be ?dying?? I?m seeing plenty of PC exclusives coming out too and allot of games for that are both PC and console. I?m also seeing things like high rez packs for the PC version of multi platform games because a PC can handle more than the Xbox can. I actually went and bought a PS2 way back when and but never really used it.

Project Nemesis said:
PC gaming is never going to die as long as the dudes that make the games make them USING A PC.
I think there must be an attempt to address the underlying issues in this statement. Game devs use PCs, of course. Most consumers don't need PCs to play the finished product, however. Console sales and digital distributions just whip that finished product right to the end user, no problem.

But, if PCs are become consoles (or vice versa) how will game devs address those sectors of the market that are just as interested in modding as they are in playing?

In alot of cases, mods can turn a good game into a great game or even turn a crappy game into a good game. And the modders who do that work should be thanked and praised in accordance with their output. As a more recent example, Fallout: New Vegas becomes many many times better with a few mods installed.

Mods also allow players to specialize their experience because they can choose which mods to install. If the availability of a mod or the ability to make ones own is what will take an otherwise non-purchasing consumer and turn them into a purchasing one, then that small investment in mod tool kids and availability has got to be worth it for the game devs, right?

Now a truly committed modder and fan CAN make mods for console titles, but the process is nowhere near as streamlined as it is for PC titles. I like console gaming because I don't have to phone up tech support, re-install any of my drivers, or go through different hoops for different operating systems. That stuff sucks and saps the creative energy out of my gaming experience. But if an otherwise good game can be made nearly perfect by the availability of modds, then I would still choose to buy it for my PC instead. That is to say: I'd happily pay all the heartaches and headaches for just that little bit of extra creative freedom and enjoyment.

Does anybody else feel me on this?

Sir,
Your points counter-act your goal.

I can do everything I could do with the 4 things in your demon's hands with 2 hands: an iPhone, and a PC.

The future is in the PCs. The consoles are taking a more PC style idea of "Let us provide everything they need on one system". This is different than the traditional console (Arcade machines, N64, Atari) where you play one game, you start up the machine and that game is what you get.

As for the popularity of PC Gaming, there are many more outlets of PC Gaming other than just WoW. Valve's steam service allows for a quick way to get to your games and interact with a community, thousands upon thousands of people make up said community. Games from Blizzard arn't just good for playing now, eSports is growing in the US. Take a look at the StarCraft 2 panel at PAX, there were too many people who wanted to be there but had to get turned away. With the North American StarLeague coming up with $400,000 in prizes just focused on a PC Video game, StarCraft 2, and PC gaming in effect, will be at the forefront of the gaming scene for a long, long time to come.

Sir, I commend you for being brave enough to attack this topic, but if you are going to take an opinion make it the right one. With all the facts.

I have to completely disagree with Bob. PC gaming is as strong as ever. Saying it's a niche market now is like saying that Sci-Fi is a niche market now. It has always been a niche market. The only difference is now the guys who were kids playing PC games are now adults with better incomes. Gaming PCs are getting cheaper and they still have better graphics. Things like "Steam" also make the PC competitive. Games are cheaper and more available on "Steam".

PS: The tablet is little more than a glorified large screen cell phone. It is no where near as good as a PC.

Don't want to sound like some sort of snob or anything, but... What a load of bullocks.

Obviously PC technology will get more efficient and compact (up to a point), but you could have taken that review and replaced the "personal computer" with an Ipad 2, and it would still have been as true. The majority of science/computer/important work is done on PCs and I would be highly surprised if that didn't stop being the case for a long time. As for PC gaming, you said yourself consoles are just limited PCs, are you saying console gaming is also dead as well? Neither of them are dead or dying. PC gaming is still thriving (people wouldn't make PC exclusives otherwise, hell why would they bother making games out on PC at all?), and if you think that the kinect/move/wii remote work better than a mouse, then I'm afraid I'll stop having to take you seriously.

Edit: I have a wii/360/ds/psp and a gaming PC (coincidently I use the PC the most). I'm not biased. I just think you're wrong.

Edit 2: Console gaming is dead. They are already PCs.
