I don't agree. When the consoles get the functionality of a PC, what is then the difference between the console and the PC? Both is just beige (or black/whatever) boxes anyway.

Besides, the thing i like most about the PC, is the P part of it. In most cases today, the console is linked up to a TV in the living-room or something, accessible for all the inhabitants of the house (i know, not in all cases), while at least where i am, a PC is a personalized computer, only owned and used by a single person. Mine is in my bedroom, far away from all the other people around me. I know laptops are taking over much of that part, but i consider them PC's as well. Heck, here in Norway, we call them portable PC's anyway.

/rambling about how PC is superior to the console...

At first, I thought he was just rehashing an older GameOverthinker movie, but then he took that twist into "PCs are dying" bit. I was entertained, and I can't say I would mind more GameOverthinker-esque stuff over at the Escapist.

I think Bob's looking into the future. I don't think we're talking the death of the PC in 5 years here. This is more like 15 to 30 when tablets are more than just expensive Apple toys. He's talking a generation's time, not a "blink and you'll miss it" kind of moment. So maybe "death" is too harsh of a word. Maybe "decline" is more of the issue.

So yeah, this isn't anything to get upset over. Bob pulled out the crystal ball, so shake your cane at him when we're 60 and can definitely prove or disprove his ideas.
15-30 years into the future?

Heck, by then we might even have moved on into star trecky holochambers.

So long as it also lets me zoom in on my Warhammer minis while I'm painting, I'm on the android eyeball implant side.

Actually, screw that, my hands can be faster than my brain. Case in point; I was faster than any chicken mod/hack in Diablo II Hardcore back in the day, so fast that would-be PK hackers trying to kill my character through the abuse of waypoint and/or town portal hacking/macros wanted to know where I got my stuff.

Cyber gaming would require more use of the brain and would interface poorly with such reflexes... But doing away with that damned magnifying visor and just getting a permanent face-mounted zoom lens would still be convenient.

Two words:
Paradox Interactive.

Consoles have no historical grand strategy games.
I rather believe that Consoles and PCs will undergo a weird fusion in the end.

But why would I want to use four different devices to do all this stuff when I could just sit down on my comfy chair at my computer and do them all on one device?

PCs will either become obsolete or get so compact that they colapse into their own gravity well, forming a miniature black hole that grows by consuming the materials around it, getting bigger until IT HAS CONSUMED THE EARTH! Don't let this happen! Use the time machine! Add more exclamation points!!!! Save the future!

I'm not going to get angry, because the writing on the wall's been there for some time. You work on PCs, you play on consoles, so because you hate work, you have to differentiate them.
It's unfortunate that a video that clearly had some work put into it got conscended into a two-sentence piece that undermines everything it's going by accusing the author of being a biased person who doesn't even realize he's biased.

Yes, you're right, the title is clear and noticeable flamebait. The video, on the other hand, is not.

I've got to admit, Bob: While this episode was very insightful and informative, it unfortunately was as depressing as Part 1 of your Sonic video over at the Game Overthinker (yes, some of us do watch that still).

As for the Hardware debate. In no way shape and form can your phone, your laptop or your console provide the same high fidelity experience that a modern desktop can.

Desktops have better visuals, audio and overall performance. Heck the basic gaming desktop of today is easily a generation ahead of the console. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.247185-Crytek-PCs-Are-a-Generation-Ahead-of-Consoles]

If graphics, sound and data storage did not matter, we would all still be playing Space Invaders.

Edit: Corrected generation gap and provided a link to the article. My old memory is not as good as it used to be.

I think pc gaming is actually becoming better, due to the recent plateau in processing power and graphics technology, and the fact that games are at a point where they can't get a whole lot more realistic without a treadmill, virtual boy gettup, and smellivision makes cost of entry alot smaller. Even if a new console generation appears pretty soon, there's a pretty high chance that the bluray problem might happen. (blu rays don't get rented/purchased, because they cost more, but don't look much better than an upscaled standard dvd) The xbox 720 isn't going to sell many units if the only upgrade to master chief is simulated rust on his armor when you get up to go to the bathroom.

LOL.

I am trying really hard to think of a good response which isn't based of A) Fanboism and B) Ego.

I think the problem is that you need to define not just where the tech is going but where the people are going. I am a niche consumer. I demand the technology that "I want" in my day to day tasks/chores/activities. But there are more people out there that will take, using Apple as an example, whatever they are given.

Do I think I will notice any tailoffs of PC tech in the next 20 years? No. We spend enough as a niche market to keep PC Hardware companies innovating. Because of this hardware innovation all of the other markets benefit. That's right, we are actually providing the other markets the technology THEY need to innovate.

PCs then are not dieing they are mearly at the plateau that is the product life cycle. Sure it is nearing the end, but it has YEARS to go yet (I seriously think about 20). I also know for a fact that techies like myself will always refuse to just choose tech generic tablet one as our machine of choice. If I cant choose the parts, build it myself and then modify it at will; I will not buy it.

Does anyone else think that the term PC should also refer to laptops? They are functionally identical in every way except that a desktop doesn't have an attached monitor or an internal battery.

EDIT: Actually, notice how laptops were not mentioned.
Laptops ARE computers, and I agree laptops will probably replace the box PC. But ...it's still a PC.
I agree with this. Laptops are replacing desktops, but a PC is still a PC. I agree that I very rarely sit at my desktop for gaming, except when I need the horsepower that my netbook doesn't provide, but I'm still on my netbook far more often then I'm on my console.

I also didn't hear a mention of flash games. There's a lot of up and coming companies that started by developing flash games for sites like newgrounds, armor games and kongregate. This might be the future of gaming as a whole; lots of short, easy to develop games that get made into big budget studio games once it can be proved that people like the concept.

Desktop PC's are certainly going away...but laptops aren't. Can't really see myself using a tablet for game design software >.>

Actually very much true when I think about it... heck its happening at my home right now, my dad's directly stated that he won't actually buy a new PC (well... home Mac) to replace our current one when its died, but rather he'll simply buy a large display that we can plus all our laptops into (since we ALL have one now in my family :p) in case we need a larger screen to work on (for example, my dad prefers a large screen when doing artwork on the computer).

Very good points there, the desktop PC is becoming completely irrelevant for the common user, since laptops pretty much have all the power they need for all the simple day-to-day tasks that one might be asked of.
