Look no one is writing an essay to college (not a serious one) in some tablet. No one is gonna watch 2 seasons of Rome in the iPhone. Do you wanna know Y? 'Couse I tried. Having a keyboard makes a difference to typing and a cell phone screen is to small to wacht a 48 min series without missing lots of details. The same reason exist for pc gaming. Also pc gaming exist only because of this http://www.gametrailers.com/video/episode-111-pach-attack/64279. I have problems with Pacth opinions, but making games and selling to a pc means more money and faster then to a console.

As for the Hardware debate. In no way shape and form can your phone, your laptop or your console provide the same high fidelity experience that a modern desktop can.

Desktops have better visuals, audio and overall performance. Heck the basic gaming desktop of today is easily a generation ahead of the console. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.247185-Crytek-PCs-Are-a-Generation-Ahead-of-Consoles]

If graphics, sound and data storage did not matter, we would all still be playing Space Invaders.

Edit: Corrected generation gap and provided a link to the article. My old memory is not as good as it used to be.
I don't think anyone can top this post, so I'm just gunna go ahead and say...What he said ^^.

PC gaming..CLEARLY..is far FAR from dying, if anything..its blossoming. So, I don't know what your sniffing Bob, but your dead wrong.

*Looks over my steam account*
Huh, PC-gaming looks just fine to me.

But seriously now, for the sake of discussion, I wanna see some one start a LAN party with a minimum of 20 people and every one is playing on consoles. And then tell me that they had a better experience then they would have had if they were siting on their own PCs.

I feel compelled to reply to this as you went to the trouble of copy/pasting 3 pages of listed PC exclusives.

Firstly, desktop hardware may be better, but not everyone is willing to shell out for something that is going to be considered obselete within the three months.

Secondly, most desktop games are, and always will be, limited by multiplatform releases. Nowadays it wont make a difference if you buy Crysis 2 on PC or PS3, because they will both look, sound and (to a certain extent) perform the same.

Thirdly, while nothing Atari did during the second console generation was really intelligent, and everyone knows this now. Even if they didnt fail spectacularly they would have improved thier consoles and games or the Commordore platform would have overtaken them and put them out of buisness anyway.

Oh and if youre wondering the original Space Invaders was designed for those old arcade coin vacuums. Atari just borrowed the idea then ran away with it. Tripping over several times.

And finally as a go-betweener of PC desktop and console games, i can tell you it is just much harder to get immersed by a PC game. Dont know why, but it just is.
First: You don't need to have the best hardware at all times. I haven't upgraded my PC for 3 years and its still doing just fine. Having to upgrade to the best of the best every few months is just a silly myth.

Second: This is why you won't need to upgrade much. Since each game will need to run on consoles, the PC requirements won't be really steep.

Third: Don't have much to say about that to be honest.

And finally: I find it much easier to get immersed in a PC game than a console game. Its the reason console "horror" games don't scare me at all. Yet on the PC they scare the crap out of me.
Ok of the three responses i got to my bile insert yours is the most valid.

First: Admit defeat.

Second: Milage will vary. Alot. C&C4 just barely ran on my 3 year old gaming PC and even before that L4D2 was choppy.

I would have considered an upgrade, if i could go without internet for a few days. Im aware most upgrade processes are quicker than a few days, but i have a busy life.

And finally: Guess immersion is down to the person. I dont pretend to be a fan of survival horror games, in fact im irked by Dead Space whenever i think about it. Speaking of Dead Space, when i played it for the first time on PC my analatical trait took over completely and it ended up with me ignoring all the dialouge and perfectly predicting where, when and what enemies would appear. I wasnt irked by the game, i was irked by how predictable i found it.

I really hope your wrong Bob. I can't stand playing a first person shooter with a console controller, and Wiimotes, Move controllers, and Kinect are hardly good replacements for mouse and keyboard. They do fine for what they're meant for, but they can't really hold up the the reliability and accuracy of a mouse. And have you tried to browse the web on the Wii? You have to hunt and peck on the onscreen keyboard. If consoles adopted the mouse and keyboard as optional peripherals I might me inclined to agree with you, but I can't see anyone typing a five page report in Microsoft Word for school with a Wiimote. Not to mention that if you had to research anything, looking up sources online would be slow and arduous compared to looking it up on a desktop. So consoles are hardly a replacement for a PC. All of this can be done with laptops of course, but if your like me and mainly use your computer for sitting on your ass at home playing games, you might as well go the extra mile and get a really nice desktop rather than a laptop with inferior power.

I just have to respectfully disagree with Bob on this one.

As has been mentioned by others there are reasons that the PC is still relevant.

I for one prefer a desktop PC over any laptop or tablet. Why? Modular design. I'm not even THAT huge a tech-nerd (I'm running WindowsXP and not Linux). But the ability to swap out any component in my computer or build one to exactly my specs easily is a huge sell point for me. NO Laptop, Gaming Console, Tablet, or Mobile Device gives me that ability. The PS3 started out giving you a bit a freedom with the other OS support, but that is no longer case (Go GEOHOT!).

So, until these other platforms offer that kind of consumer control the desktop PC will have a home among tech-heads: major and minor.

That said, these other platforms DO offer things that the PC doesn't so I won't say that PC is the king of everything. It isn't. But to say that everything the PC does others also do is just as false.

Here's why I disagree. The idea of having 30,000 different objects - your tablet, console, laptop, mobile phone, etc etc etc to all do the thing that -my pc can do on its own- is a really middle class idea. A wonderful idea for the comfortably well off.

Sorry, but reality check. I can't afford all those different gadgets. I want one centralised hub that I can put together and upgrade piece by piece to do for £400 what (and let's just get our ass-number-calculator out) my ipad (£450) laptop (£300) console (£200) and fancypants-phone (£115) can do for... roughly £1000.

Plus, you know. Any games a PS3 can do my PC can do prettier and faster. Same for the PS4, when it turns up. :)

short sweet reply
A) I like building my computer
B) I like having options of service providers (on consoles you're forced to go with either PSN, Live or whatever the hell the wii has)
C) I like programming
D) I like OWNING MY OWN DAMN STUFF (instead of a long term loan from apple)
E) Developers don't have to cow-tow to the big 3 to produce games.
F) I do believe tablets and consoles will continue to get better and do more interesting things, but they will only supplement my home PC. I will probably get a tablet in the next 3 years, but it won't replace my desktop, it won't replace my laptop (but it will probably replace some functionalities of the laptop) and it won't replace my xbox or my wii.

wasn't as short and sweet as I thought it would be.

So, is a notebook or tablet with Windows not a PC now? Is a PS3 with Linux, mouse, and keyboard really a console? Its not the shape of the device that defines PC gaming.

The laptop is still a PC..... + flash games on pc, + faster interwebs. + games are just moving to all consoles + pc nowadays. Makes sense to cross-platform = more sales. I really don't think the age of computer games is over......

With current-gen consoles, PC still seems to hold its own pretty well:

1. While you can use a Keyboard & Mouse on the consoles, you still can't use them to play the games (if I'm mistaken about it please correct me). I tried using my 360 controller for the PC on "Games for Windows" titles and while it's fun to use in fighting games and such, some games just don't feel right - mainly FPS and RPG.
2.Good PC games usually have huge mod communities that give the game very high replayability.
3.Games that do well on a console and weren't planned to be released on PC tend to get a PC release later.

PC gaming will die, but only once consoles will have all the abilities that make PC gaming better, which will essentially make the consoles into just different types of PCs.

I think the single fact that the ps3 RUNS on an operating system pretty much makes it a PC.
A rose of any other name would headshot as accurately.

I want it too, and I want that release date to be true.

:(
Waitwaitwait... what?!

Oh Jesus Christ on hot buttered toast, there's an actual release date?

Please tell me. Please tell me right now.
Sadly nothing more concrete than a handful of rumours it will be released possibly sometime in 2011.

There has been conformation that it is absolutely still in development [http://kotaku.com/#!5616870/ubisoft-beyond-good--evil-2-must-be-perfect].

For some reason, I couldn't help but think about Milton Babbit's infamous "Who Cares if you Listen?" article the entire time I was watching this. I swear, this episode functions almost identically to that particular article.

I don't know enough about PC gaming to provide a good answer on this, but still... fun way to get instant controversy if I've ever seen it.
