The Big Picture: PC Gaming Is Dead - Long Live PC Gaming!

I've been a PC gamer since Windows 95. In that time, it's pretty clear that the money is with console gaming, that's more or less a fact. The sort of "golden age" of PC gaming, your Fallout, Deus Ex, Half Life, System Shock and stuff like that. All those games were born as PC exclusives and now are soon to be getting new games on the consoles or have already got them (System Shock is basically Bioshock only with computers if you didn't know).

But I have to say, I don't really care. I think PC game sales are enough and the PC is versatile enough that companies will still release their games on the PC as well as the consoles. I mean, it's even easier for them now that Steam is really starting to get some numbers behind it. It's also never going to stop getting the indie stuff, so there you have it. As long as my PC gaming comrades keep flying the flag of denial then I can quietly get on with playing the latest titles.

But yeah, I should clarify that I do all my "PC gaming" on my laptop, have done for a long time. Got a fancy mouse and keyboard so I can play games at the desk, in bed, on the sofa, outside or wherever I please. I do think that desktop computers are becoming pretty pointless. That's kind of a shame really, it's easy to learn how a computer works with a desktop, it's kind of like the last thing you could easily build at home. Well, not easily but y'know, compared to building an iPad or even a laptop.

PC gaming will never die. A year ago I didn't have the money to build a new gaming rig so I bought a PS3. Paid a fortune for a bunch of games over the coarse of 6 months and really didn't like the fact that these games whore out DLC at launch many times.

Tax season rolled around...AMD's chips where priced right and so I built another gaming rig. Lucky for me, I am finding more PC specific titles this time around and less of those crappy console ports that everyone hates.

And so...Once again I am back on top, buying up many games via STEAM, downloading NES ROM's from the past and playing them on my PC for free. Downloading FREE mods for Oblivion, playing EVE Online...playing the shit out of BFBC2, enjoying Dragon Age Origins, playing a bit of Left4Dead2, picking up a bunch of Eidos games for dirt cheap from STEAM...Playing the Witcher for the first time via STEAM...on wait...did someone say PC gaming was dead. At least I got a Blue Ray player with my PS3...comes in handy when I want to watch some movies.

As for the Hardware debate. In no way shape and form can your phone, your laptop or your console provide the same high fidelity experience that a modern desktop can.

Desktops have better visuals, audio and overall performance. Heck the basic gaming desktop of today is easily a generation ahead of the console. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.247185-Crytek-PCs-Are-a-Generation-Ahead-of-Consoles]

If graphics, sound and data storage did not matter, we would all still be playing Space Invaders.

Edit: Corrected generation gap and provided a link to the article. My old memory is not as good as it used to be.
Gah!
Hazah! this to its fullest extent! (I even got shogun 2 yesterday :D) This better explains my previous rant in a non banning mannor, i like it
Diablo 3 may not be on that list ultimately: http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/711050/blizzard-teases-diablo-3-on-consoles-pc-gamers-around-the-world-mourn/
Really???? NOOOOOOO!!!! It has always been a PC only game though... Ohwell, there are many other great titles in that list
I'm not really a huge Diablo fan in all honesty. So it's not a huge loss to me. That game is too much of a timesink for me to play and not get incredibly irritated at.

I'm a big MovieBob fan, but I don't think this video gives the PC a fair trial whatsoever, and I don't feel as if this topic was well-researched. You fail to mention many things - for example the thousands of mods out there that'll keep you playing for years longer on a game than usual. Besides, I'm sure I read somewhere that PC sales are rising steadily.

Your wondering what to put in the place your PC used to be? How about your laptop, ipad, gaming console(unless you like lots of others have several). Since they do take up atleast the same if not more space than a pc...

Personal preferance is a tiny little pc connected directly to my biggass HD tv that can do all the things the other hardware you talked about, but takes up LESS SPACE! But then thats just me. The only reason for dividing the functionality of a pc to several small devices is that people are to retarded to use something as "complex" and multifunctional as a pc. The use of technological products has to be restricted or your avrage joe will break the stuff instantly.

Hurray for the technological progress of making technology be able to do LESS!

Edit: Less is moaaar!?

I can't believe Bob didn't mention piracy in this episode. PCs provide more freedom than any other gaming platform, that includes mods (good) and piracy (bad). PC gaming sales have been suffering at ungodly low sales levels due to games being stolen. Remember DMC4 on the PC? It looked amazing and played terrifically, so why didn't Bayonetta get a PC port? Because you, me and everyone we know pirated the shit out of DMC4. Devs are already getting hurt from pre-owned sales and piracy doesn't help.

That being said PC gaming will only die once this generation of PC gamers dies out. As it stands the PC offers too much to gamers to be forgotten as a gaming platform any time soon.

I think the fallacy here is referring to "gaming" and "AAA gaming" as identical. The vast majority of good indie games come out on PC because it's a cheaper development platform. Entire companies have their entire libraries on PC, and are doing quite well.

Sure it's a different beast than it was, and in some sense it's an end of an era. That said, all "heralding the end" really does is start up semantic arguments.

Also, people aren't going to get rid of their dedicated boxes. It's just much simpler to deal with one box than several, at least until distributed cloud computing really takes off. Even still that has some serious drawbacks (losing a large chunk of computing potential due to a network outage or congestion, cough, cough). Not to mention that desktops are the most computing bang for your buck, and will always be. Mobile computing will always be more expensive simply because you're dealing with smaller, more specialized components with much tighter design restrictions.

So no, I can't see desktops ever going away. Nice try at futurist sci-fi writing, Bob, but I think you ought to stick with your day job.

I not gonna claim to have read that list exhaustively but apart from the MMO's (and it looks like mmo's are becoming multi-platform reasonably soon anyway) arnt most of the PC exclusives on that list very obscure/shit?
Disagree. I'd say at the very least a third of that list is at least an A rated game.

wait wait wait... did you just have the balls to call a CA game shit??....... i am now forced to slap you with my glove and call you a bufoon!

Stupid consoles and their exclusives and mass-appeal having lead directly to a dumbing-down of every game mode available, and forced me to buy consoles purely because the game isn't available on any other platform. Of course, I need several different consoles to play all the games I want (which sure ends up costing more than a PC, especially with the half a billion addons), when they could all be played on my PC if it wasn't for economic reasons.

Yeah this sure is an improvement.

The simple fact of the matter is that no matter the development of hardware, a big 'ol desktop will always be both cheaper and better than anything else.

Oh and I'm sorry, but your views on the childhood of the pc-gamer is almost a generation off. Nowadays having a gaming pc is a luxury, not something you're stuck with.

Also, Steam.

In addition I'd like to thank Moviebob for using his normal argument technique:

"If you disagree with me it's because you're bad, not because I may be wrong."
I have to admit, I've got off MovieBob over the last year, which is a shame as I used to like the GameOverthinker. This is partly the reason.

I think the computer gaming scene will always be there in some form or another, there will never be a console game to knock WoW off its MMO throne and you're not going to get the same feel from playing an RTS with a Wii-mote but for all FPS, Racing, Adventure and Horror games the console is going to, or already has taken over.

He has a valid point though about the usefulness of a pc being a sort of thing of the past, I'm on my Blackberry now just typing this, my laptop hasn't been used in 3 days now and I can do everything I need to from either my phone or my PS3.

I only use my laptop for documents and if I feel like playing the occasional RTS.

Even some titles like Diablo 3 are getting ready for console versions, which I cant wait for.

So, I can agree with everything said, basically,

But... is it really a beneficial thing to have our media split up onto four different devices, each of which breaks down or becomes obsolete regularly?
I mean, the reason I never personally got into PC gaming is because it's too expensive to keep up with the technology,
So if we're going to go in this direction, isn't it going to be even MORE strenuous on the pocketbook? Is this something we should be celebrating?

Also, good god this video has a lot of comments.

I'll say it all in only one sentence:

Tablets and cellphones ARE PCs.

Really, Ironclad, Valve, Stardock, Paradox... FREAKING BLIZZARD! There are a lot of developers that would beg to disagree with just the statement. The rest? Garbage. The first time I so strongly disagree with you bob. Mainly because you're talking nonsense. You're limiting the definition of a PC to just the usual CPU, Monitor and Mouse/Keyboard combo. Any machine that computes for an individual is a freaking PC. Even if you're going to go for the combo, it is still vital and will continue to be the most powerful piece of hardware in any home for decades. And then it will become something else, but with the same possibilities.
