The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Shows You How Tactics Kill Sectoids

Flying laser turrets? Whatever will they think of next?

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/10328-The-Bureau-XCOM-Declassified-Preview] has been releasing some intriguing videos of late, and this tactics display will show you how your Agent Carter - without firing a shot himself - can lead his team to glorious victory. Cover, good position, mines and turrets all get their time to shine, plus a nicely timed Taunt to put the last enemy right where he didn't really want to be.

This 1960s-era shooter has you, as Carter, giving orders to your squad in the field, investigating reports of alien activity and neutralizing the threat as soon as it rears its slimy grey head. Your troopers gain experience and skills - like Taunt - through combat, but remember, this is XCOM, so when they snuff it, they stay snuffed. Try not to lose your experienced troopers in some kind of alien OK Corral; you may not be able to recover from that kind of loss.

This title's due for an Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release in August 2013.

I dont know how I feel about this game - it definitely doesnt look bad, it just doesnt look like XCOM. The enemies in particular dont have the same individual feel that they did in the last game, I feel like they could be replaced with mercenaries without changing the gameplay at all...

I have all of the original X-Com games as well as the new one and I think this looks pretty great. I like that they put it on ice and rethought how they could make it more than just another shooter. Having it be a tactical FPS I think is a great move, as it joins some of the feeling of the tactical side we know and love with a more personal view of the battlefield.

Here's hoping the combat makes the player use good tactics though. It'll be lame if all the abilities are just gimmicks that aren't really necessary and you can just power your way through every combat. Put me down for 'excited'!

Well...

That brightened by prospects for this game considerably.

I just hope my craptop can run it when it comes out.

That looks really good, I'm impressed, I thought we were talking Mass Effect level tactics here, but it seems like it's way better

Looks pretty good so far. I know people will always compare it to xcom, but you still have those games. This is just something new and its looks excellent so far. Lots of strategy etc Just waiting to see what other stuff you can build and research. :)

I don't know about you lot, but I'm certainly not excited by the fact that the player didn't fire a single shot. I mean, squad-based tactics are cool 'n' all, but I don't want to spend the entire game just baby-sitting my squad. I've got Enemy Unknown for that already.
I agree with this to an extent, but if they can really pull off the feeling of XCOM as a 3rd person shooter I'll be all over this game. Do they have any footage of shooting yet? I suppose you really would have a point if it turned out to be percentage based hit chance. It already looks like they pulled the cover mechanic straight out of the other game.

I mean, the video was made specifically to showcase managing your squad. I'm glad the protagonist didn't fire a single bullet, it just emphasizes the destructive power of your team.

I'm still extremely skeptical about this game... going to wait for reviews before I drop anything on it... but this video does give me hope. Now... lemme see what the overworld crap looks like.

It looks really good, but I'm still holding my "Shut up and take my money" phase till the reviews. Remember guys, we still have Xenonauts to come out if we want the old ways of XCom modernized a bit.

It looks a convincing mash-up of TBS and squad based real time combat. I think it's trying to preserve the feel of X-Com enemy unknown with the squad management system, which is a good thing IMO. I'm looking forward to this game now. Thief developers take note, this is how you extend/refresh a franchise convincingly.
