As someone that played in the beta(woo Humble Bundle) the PC version is actually really solid from what I saw. Lots of graphic, gameplay and input customization, so it's definitely not a half-baked port. It's disappointing to see the graphics pulled down to avoid the touchier of the console players from whining, but of what I played in the beta, the game was incredibly fun and ran great. It even ran on my machine pretty well which was actually UNDER minimum requirements at the time.
It's funny that in trying to avoid touchy console players, they instead pissed off touchy PC gamers, but yes, sad to see so much misinformation in this thread. People proclaiming they are done with Ubisoft because they aren't catering to the top 1% of PC gamers that have machines powerful enough to justify the kinds of changes the devs are talking about in this video. Even as someone with a high end PC myself, the amount of tears being shed over this "well no shit" comment is just embarrassing.
Yeah, from a purely economical standpoint, it makes sense to annoy a small number of PC gamers than a small-but-slightly-larger number of console gamers.
Honestly, I think more people are more likely to be turned off by an apparent 'downgrade', especially if the company has a history of it rather than 'your machine(console) just cannot run it as well as this other one' for consoles getting an inferior version. I mean, we see it quite a bit in the current console generation where the PS4 versions tend to be *slightly* better than the Xbox One versions, and while you get a lot of noise over it, I don't think it actually reasonably impacts sales, so...
Which is disappointing, because the Division is probably Ubisoft's best PC port in a long time, but because the dev spoke casaully instead of running everything through an empty corporate PR speak filter, people get pissed off for something that we all knew AAA companies have been doing for as long as they've been making multi-platform games.
Yeah, this is definitely their best port I can think of. Massive did a really good job on it. The only problem I noted during the beta was that if I had a gamepad plugged in, it kinda wigged out the UI interaction while using a mouse and keyboard, but gameplay/control wise was top notch, as well as there being PC-only gameplay customization options like "parkour mode" to make the gameplay smoother for people that want it like that.
So I'm hard pressed that the PC guys are getting shafted on this one.
Beyond the potential cheating issue aceman 67 mentions above, the Division plays really well on a variety of hardware, from low end to high end, and it looks noticeably better on PC, but apparently admitting that it was made for consoles first is some kind of terrible sin now. This whole thing seems like people jumping to conclusions because Ubisoft has fucked up with PC ports in the past, so everyone is looking for the next Unity or Watch Dogs to burn on the pyre.
I ran into one "cheater" in the beta in the dark zone. Dude was invisible and shooting people. However, reading up on it, it was a glitch where you could get stuck in a door somewhere, and your body would stay there, but you could run around and shoot people. If you shot the frozen body, the player still died, and while it could be exploited, it was also entirely possible to have it happen accidentally. Stuff like that is very likely to be patched in.
Though the client-authority stuff is indeed distressing, I didn't encounter anyone that seemed to be exploiting that in the beta, so I guess we'll see if a) they change it to have the server just do basic value clamping(so you can't edit your magazines to be over a certain size or whatnot) or b) just use full server authentication. The dark zone apparently uses dedicated servers as opposed to P2P, so it's technically possible(if improbable) for them to switch over to server-auth.
I guess we'll just have to see how rampant it is. I guess the positive is it can't be any worse than in any given golden-year CoD game.
