The Fate of DJ Hero Is Not Determined

A short statement from developer Freestyle Games says that despite Activision shuttering Guitar Hero, no jobs have been cut on DJ Hero ... yet.

Just a few years ago, it seemed that music videogames were going to rule the world, or at least the gaming industry. Profits on Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band were through the roof, with huge margins on the expensive full sets netting Activision and Viacom a boatload of cash. But the genre grew too fast, and consumers tired of the novelty as highly regarded games like The Beatles: Rock Band and DJ Hero failed to sell well. Activision announced today that they were closing down most of its Guitar Hero operations [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107672-Activision-Pulls-the-Plug-on-Guitar-Hero-Franchise], laying off close to 500 workers, but the developers of DJ Hero wanted to make it clear that they are still in business.

"We're actively working with Activision on various options going forward for the studio. No decisions have been taken at this stage. We appreciate everyone's support through this process and will be as open and transparent as possible as soon as we know more," read the statement from FreeStyle Games cofounders David Osbourn, Jamie Jackson and Chris Lee.

Despite inexplicably combining two incongruous phrases - "decisions have been made" with "steps have been taken" - the trio seems confident that a deal can be made with Activision for FreeStyle to continue to make games. Whether that means staff cuts at the company or not remains to be seen.

There is hope then. DJ Hero 2 was my personal GOTY for 2010 and I definitely wouldn't mind an upgrade. I know there's a DJ Hero coming out for the 3DS, so that's something.

Mainly, I want a peripheral with better buttons; the timing sucks since the input is practically recognized when you release the button instead of upon pressing it, something that video/audio calibration can't fix.

Definitely good news. Let's hope DJ Hero doesn't follow the fate of Guitar Hero where it will be milked to death.

Bought DJ Hero 1 and hardly play it anymore.

Guess music isn't my thing... although I'd love to see a DJ:Hero Daft Punk and that I'd play to death; if I could actually mash and mix 2 songs that'd be the ultimate DJ Hero.

I hope DJ Hero lives on, it's a franchise that hasn't reached it's full potential yet.

The problem with guitar hero is that they released too many games in too short a period of time. (5, Van Halen, and Band Hero were all pretty close to one another. And it wasn't that long before 6 rolled around)
As long as DJ hero can avoid going the same route, they should be fine.

I've only played this game for like... five minutes, and I found it really boring. Give me IIDX any day.

Disclaimer: I'm a fan of music games like IIDX and osu!, but I never really got into the whole Guitar Hero thing.

Check out the DJ Hero website, http://www.djhero.com/en-gb/home/index

Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing's DJ Hero business unit and discontinue development on its DJ Hero game for 2011.These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences.

Wait what? Bringing back two series that are widely regarded as some of the worst games ever made (Total Wipeout and Family Guy) while flogging the dying donkey called Call of Duty?

well this comment kind of broke the article. Of course DJ Hero was going to crash. it broke a million in slaes when the price steadily dropped from $120 to $40.
