As a fan of the series, I pose this question to the Escapists in hopes of sparking discussion of the human condition. Two episodes that have been commented on constantly of the series are lauded as the saddest episodes in the show.

The first is Jurassic Bark, in which Fry discovers the remains of his long lost dog, Seymour, and the Professor could revive Seymour once again, but Fry is informed that Seymour had in fact died at the ripe old age of 12, 144 in dogs years. Fry then decides to not go through with the process. What is unknown to him is that those 7 years were spent Seymour waiting ever so faithfully for Fry to return not moving his spot once.

The second is The Luck of the Frish where Fry attempts to track down his lucky seven leaf clover to regain the loss luck of his childhood. Convinced that Yancey, his brother, stole the plant, and used its luck to change his name to Phillip J. Fry and became the first man to land on Mars, Fry realizes that it was in fact Yancey's son, named Phillip J. Fry Jr., who was the one that accomplished the great dreams that Fry Sr. had. Heartbroken that Yancey had so much love for his younger brother, to name his son after him, Fry closes the tomb of his unknown nephew.

There are many other episodes that are placed in this category these stick out in mind as the most profound. Which episode do you think will prevail?

Even though it doesnt have that sad of an ending, the episode called "the sting" made me cry at the funeral. "farewell from the world of tommorow!" had me sobbing

Several episodes. Luck of the Fryish and Jurassic Bark will be on every list. However, The Sting, The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings, and Leela's Homeworld really stick out for me as well.

It depends, I think it was Jurassic Bark, the Luck of the Fryish and then the Sting. But the first two kind of got retconned with Benders Big Score. So they're less sad now.

The Luck of the Fryish could still theoretically have happened, albeit Yancy would have had his son much later in life.

In Bender's Big Score, Yancy does indeed have a son called Phillip, but his conversation with Bender indicates that the Fry has met the other Phillip. So Fry never meeting his nephew and Yancy naming him because he was missing never happened. So assumedly Fry and his brother reconciled (helped by Future Fry knowing how much Yancy missed him) and Yancy's son was still named after Fry but probably because of how close they were.

I don't think there's any way to quantify how much sadder one episode is from the other. But that's not going to stop me from trying!

"Farewell, from the World of Tomorrow!" was a line that certainly choked me up, but The Sting was, more than anything else, a mindfuck. I remember audibly saying "...holy shit," to myself.

Luck of the Fryrish is another choker-upper, because well, that's just a beautiful realization to have. However the sentiment comes from an ultimately uplifting place. It's less sad than it is just... well, emotional. Like an Extreme Home Makeover crying.

Jurassic Bark, on the other hand, is devastating. Because Fry, while walking away happy like in Luck of the Fryrish, is doing so believing the exact opposite of the truth. A truth which we, the viewers, now have to bear. And that truth crushed every single one of us.

Hm. Guess that was easier than i thought. You're welcome!

I think of it more of like who Fry had left behind when he got hurled into the future. While the ending of Jurassic Bark is devastating, in my mind, is the thought that Fry can never truly appreciate that Yancey had decided to break all family traditions, and named his first born Philip in honor of Fry. He can never have first hand experience of his nephew achieving the dream he could never have accomplished. He can see it through the dusty lens of history. That to me is more devastating. :(

I like Futurama, I do.
I will not watch the one with the dog. I will not.

... I suppose it's lucky that the movie retconned that.

Luck of the Fryish had me shedding manly tears. Jurassic Bark did not - but I can see why people think it's the saddest. It was damn cruel of the writers to do that final montage.

The sting is the first one that came to my mind, but Jurassic Bark's ending was very poignant.

Jurassic Bark take the top prize for me, but the easy second for me is The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings. It's just so sad but so wonderful seeing love start to blossom in the last scene.

Probably the above, or the one where the professor invent a time machine, and they can only go forward. It was hilarious, but yet beautiful, and had some pretty deep points

The other episodes I see on the thread had a sort of happy ending. Jurassic Bark had a sort of really sad ending. Hell, just thinking of that dog now brings tears to my eyes.

So..from what I remember, Jurassic Bark was the saddest episode ever. One of the few episodes that make spambots cry.

Jurassic Bark for me, although damn, if Futurama doesn't half know how to pull at the heartstrings when it feels like it.

Probably best summed up with this image
