He did with Han Solo; Han shooting first made him seem aggressive, zero patience kind of guy. Him shooting second makes him seem like a victim.
I'd buy that as an argument if he didn't carry on as usual for the rest of the movie, but he did. Gollum appeared in one scene, and in the original version, he and Bilbo parted on good terms. He acknowledges that it was silly of him to accept Bilbo's last question as a riddle, but he did, and yields the ring. As opposed to chasing Bilbo through the mountain, trying to capture, kill, and eat him.

(1) I just read the book after seeing the trailer back in December.

(2) It will be awesome. My only reserve is this is part 1 . There is a sequel to this movie. I smell cash grab, or a long, bloody battle for the sequel.

I enjoyed the book, It's very light hearted and fun with a dark undertone.

My parents read it to me when I was younger. I haven't read it since then, but I remember it in broad strokes. I don't have any desire to re-read it before the movie comes out either, I prefer to have it fill in what I have forgotten to having the book fresh in memory. If do there will be the inevitable and disrupting "why did they change that detail? Why did they leave that out!?".

Haven't watched the trailer. I generally don't watch trailers for movies I know I'm gonna watch anyway. Knowing a little about a movie before you watch it rarely spoils it, on the contrary, it can make it a lot easier and somewhat more enjoyable to watch. But I already know the basic premise, and I don't need to be sold on it any further, so all it's gonna do is get me more pumped up, and I prefer to save that pumped up-ness for when it's actually out ^^

On a related note. I actually sat down and read through Lord of the Rings this last summer. It blew me away. Seriously, I kind of expected just another fantasy novel, but I was obviously wrong. It's amazing, I can't believe it took me that long to read it, even for a guy who almost never reads. I almost thought it would make me think less of the movie, but on the contrary, it just made me appreciate them more. I guess what it all adds up to is: Lord of the Rings is awesome.

I read the book when I was in grade 4. Then I read it again in grade 5. And many times since then. I find it's much more entertaining than the LotR books, and was happy that Peter Jackson had done a 'good parts' version (a la Princess Bride) of the trilogy.
I'm also happy to see that they're taking the movie conversion seriously, and I'm confident that they'll get it 'right', so to speak.
Overall, I'm excited to see it.

1) yes I read it

2) I loved the trailer. I'm apparently one of the few who understand that the movie adaptations are just that - adaptations. I don't think a word-by-word copy of the novels in film format would work at all. For instance, although I really loved the Old Forest and Tom Bombadil in the book, I think it was a good idea to cut that part from the movies.

Basically I think that Tolkien's books are excellent books and that Jackson's movies are excellent movies. They're fundamentally very different and I don't think we should mix them.

I'm a bit confused as to what Galadriel is doing in the movie, but other than that, I like it. I've been waiting a long time for this movie to get announced, and I'll definitely go and see it when it comes out.

Answer contains spoiler for those who haven't read any of the extended LotR lore

Galadriel and Radagast the Brown will both be in the Hobbit, as it's expanded to cover the incursion of the Necromancer in the south end of Mirkwood.

i can't believe how anybody couldn't have read it. It's one of those books that everyone picks up at some point.

And the trailer looks awesome. Pity to see no Smaug in it, but that'll come up in other trailers.

Also how the hell did he manage to split it up into more than one movie!
It is also adding in the plot of the necromancer, and expanding sauron's origins so that will be the second film methinks. AND BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH IS THE NECROMANCER. :nerdgasm out:

I loved the book, and the trailer is giving me this tingly-goosebumpy-feeling, really looking forward to it.

If I've read it once, I've probably read it fifteen or twenty times. I even spent a whopping $85.00 on a nice leather bound collectors edition ten years or so ago. I can't wait to see it on the big screen along with all the good stuff they've added regarding the Necromancer aka Sauron.

Give George a few years to create perfect CGI replicas of the original actors and I bet the movies will have nothing original in them.

That is an interesting change in the story. If the Hobbit were a standalone, then I can see why the change would be confusing and irritatingly pointless. But since The Hobbit was later included in the LoTR series, something had to change. At least it wasn't too severe.

Expand Sauron's origins? That would require a whole movie to tell adequately. Now I know the Hobbit movies will suck

The hobbit is the first english book I tried to read, but at the time it proved difficult. (Tried again later, was awesome.)

Regarding the trailer. Martin Freeman? Awesome! And holy crap those are a lot of dwarves, didn't they have brighly colored beards in the book?

I tried reading it, got several chapters into it, and got bored. Just a long string of walking from one place to another.

I didn't like the Lord of the Rings movies either. Except for about two minutes of CGI army battles, the whole thing stank of someone's vacation home movie. And the wizard, holy crapfest batman, the primary trait of a wizard in intellect and cool zappy stuff. Instead they turned Gandalf into a club-wielder.

I read the book three time back in school. As for the movie. I am no longer interested in watching movies based on books I have read. It's not that I think the book is always better. It just that nothing is really added to my experience by having live actors play out parts of a book I've read on the big screen. Then again, I'm one of those people who would rather listen to a CD than go to a concert.

when i say "origins" i meant the tale of the necromancer, sorry word jumble. Its explains the bit when gandalf leaves for a bit in mirkwood.
